The best anti-virus?
NOT BEING RETARDED.
Don't open e-mails from people you don't know and not from trusted sources. Stay off shitty sites with broken security.

Of course, being smart will really cut down your chances of being infected, but with so many free and cheap options that don't really hinder the performance or usability of your computer, I don't see any reason why you wouldn't use an anti-virus other than to be self-righteous like 3 of my friends who have been infected in the last 3 months w/ the same attitude. Only 1 of those friends switched to an active anti-virus after reformatting.

By being smart I haven't ever needed antivirus software, but unless you have it, how do you really know?

^ Need, no, should have, yes. PCs NEED antivirus though...I have antivirus, but cause I'm on a mac I don't need it. Now I'm not saying macs are better, but not worrying about viruses too much is an advantage of having one...

I've never needed it on any of my PC's (6+ years now) but it's rather nice to have. mac's are pretty weakly secured, and some of my most tech-stupid friends run macs but are convinced they don't need virus protection.... I still maintain that any user, mac or PC should run antivirus simply cause it's the only real way of knowing you're clean.

^Ok, just to settle this...real world case, I got a pc made in 05, it caught a virus 2 years after that, I reformatted, didn't install an anitvirus ( cause I was being a tard) and it got another virus immediately (from download.com btw, supposedly secure site). That build has given me trouble since and I pawned it off to my mom.
Got a mac in 07, never installed an antivirus, never got a virus...even spyware doesn't put up much of a fight and I notice I also get fewer pop-ups. Now I've gotten hardware problems since I'm such a heavier user (I jerk it all day ), but I've never really had much software problems.
On that subject, the reason I have a mac is cause the UI is just lightyears ahead of windows. It crashes, it slows down, but it doesn't drive me crazy like the PC does...It's just more organized when it comes to it's chaos. Plus I like not having to deal with code and going through complicated installs cause the software just doesn't work. With macs you just drag and drop the app in and it's installed...I don't see what's wrong with simplicity and linear work flows.

You should run antivirus to prevent the spread to viruses.
For example, say you run linux. The virus may be on your computer but doesn't affect it because it's a windows virus. But you can accidentally spread it to your friends via email etc.

I'm sorry, but if you aren't running antivirus AND getting viruses, you're just an idiot, don't try to blame download.com or wherever you think you got it from.
What the hell are you installing that you end up with complex installs. Unless you're trying to do all kinds of weird shit to install pirated stuff. You want an easy install? In linux I can open Synaptic (sp?), search for what I need a program to do/open/etc, pick one, and install it. Done. I want to get rid of something? I do and uncheck it from my installed programs, and hit the button.
You know what's great about PC's? If you have a hardware problem, YOU CAN OPEN THE DAMN THING. Some guy tried to sell me a mac once, he couldn't understand why I would ever want to upgrade the graphics card.
But if you honestly prefer that (imo) shitty mac UI, build a hackintosh instead of being an idiot and paying the "retard-I mean mac tax"

Personally, I find the Mac UI doesn't work as well for the work I do compared to the Windows UI ...
As for Mac AVs, has anyone tried Kaspersky for Mac ? http://usa.kaspersky.com/products_se...?icid=50000080 |

Who said anything about linux? I've been talking about mac vs pc this whole time. No point bringing in linux like you invented the thing you tit, if Linux was as practical as the other two, everyone would be using it don't you think? Instead of the 1% userbase it struggles to maintain.
You know what's great about macs? When you have a hardware problem you can take it to an apple store, go do your shopping, come back and grab the good as new.
It's becoming apparent to me that you've never even touched a mac, no, too much of a troll for that.

Since then I've borrowed several of my friends macs from time to time, and ran a hackintosh partition a little while ago, but it was fucking terrible.

^Yeah my 2 or 3 visits there, versus your "horror stories", which really don't count as experience, now do they? And I hate to vouch for a company like this, but apple has improved their game since your elementary days...
Borrowing your buddy's mac doesn't count, the first time I got my hands on a mac I f'n hated it. You gotta give it at least 2 weeks, though with linux you can have the best of both worlds so there's no point for you anymore. But to completely hate on Macs, when Pcs have soooo much more wrong with them, that's just stupid. Partition the drive and you get a pretty good gaming machine as well, so the whole "can't play games" debate is useless as well.

Considering you have to spend a minimum of $1964 to get an ATI Radeon HD 4850, which is 2-year-old graphics technology and low-end by today's PC graphics standards (a $105 graphics card according to Pricecanada.com), I'd have to say no, you can't just partition your drive and get a good gaming machine ... The BEST Apple offers is an HD 4870 (again, not high-end) and that's in a $3139 Mac Pro ...

Well I wasn't exactly going to bring my hackintosh in there now was I? Then again, it might've been worth it to see the confused looks of the guys in there.
I didn't see many benefits to linux really, it did run extremely smoothly and quickly, but it lacked some features and such that I like. It was very easy to use though (Ubuntu).
I'd like to see your examples of what you consider wrong with PC's (that is actually within the control of the OS). Part of why I hate on macs is the massive amount of ignorance that surrounds that companies entire existence.
Now wait a sec here, are you talking about the hardware or OS? Saying you can add a partition to be able to play games is cheating.
edit: and like Jmac said, even then it won't game very well.

Just because your computer doesn't show symptoms of a virus, doesn't mean you dont' have one.
It could end up being a zombie for all you know. Try looking up OS X Trojans, they exist.
Additionally, Apple takes extra care in not making their hardware compatible with anything else. That is, when they were on the PowerPC processors anyways. Their video cards required special a BIOS to run on their computers. A G4 for example, which had a GF2 card wouldn't be able to run a PC GF2 card even though the hardware is exactly the same.

here we go again with the mac vs. pc's .... what a fucking tool.
the 'news' and fact was that macs are in fact easier to hack into and their security holes are bigger than pcs, in the state that the 'news' (couple months-1yr ago, i forgot) was.
however, the security expert, or company, also stated that pc's are targeted a lot more by far. i have a mac and pc's, and i always had av on the pcs, and never on the mac's.
not having av on osx >> not having av on pc
not having av = stupid
i forgot where, but on revscene or beyond.ca someone really advocates the use of cloud-based anti-virus apps because of their ability to actively detect rootkits or something like that. i like nod32 and MSSE. watever.
from simply browsing, or even d/l the occasional movie or mp3, i don't think it'll be a problem on osx. If you start torrenting cracked releases (that aren't verified) ur opening a whole world of unknown for urself. then maybe an av is needed.
and as for mac av's, read more here |

Have been using my imac for a month now, and i havent seen the osx screen ever since I installed windows 7.
I must admit the imac screens do look damn good at the apple stores though, which is why i bought it
back on topic... my old computer i had been using for about 8 years, and it still runs like day 1 with no AV at all, just dont be a retard?
btw its not that apple computers cant get viruses, its just that they dont target them, and can still attack pc when connected.
