Which are good (uncluttered) anti-virus programs?

I've never really used anti-virus programs before.
(Always thought it was a waste of ram to have it running in the background)
I know how to take care of my computer well, and whenever some spyware comes up, I just System Restore to get rid of it.
Been doing this for the past 8 years, and it's been good.

But lately, it seems virus' have gotten better, and the last one I had that
attacked me last week actually corrupted my System Restore, and forced me
to reformat. So that was pretty annoying.. and now I have a new problem already after reformatting for only a few days...

I guess it's time to just use anti-virus program. I just want a basic one that detects stuff, don't need a over the top crazy one that takes up all the ram
or blocks out everything so you can't run anything without some prompt.

Or is there programs that act like a firewall and anti-virus, 2 in 1 kind of thing?

Any help appreciated.

if you're worried about computer resource usage, NOD32 is the lightest on resources and consistently ranked in the top 5 anti virus programs

kaspersky/nod32. they're both free if you know how to use the internet, wisely.

I would go with MSE.. or NOD if you're willing to pay. Never been a fan of Kaspersky though.. tried it on a few computers but ended up removing it.

I have installed MS's Security Essential on several systems, it doesn't seem to catch the spyware which was caught by Antivir Free.

hmm... I'm using Security Essential right now... and it seems to be picking up virus' a lot.

And it's pissing me off cause it's always telling me to reboot my computer.
And the thing is, sometimes I'm not even doing anything... like not even surfing the net.
How would I pick up these "virus" ??

And sometimes the name of the virus are re-occuring ones.

Either the virus isn't getting completely removed or something you have installed is re-infecting your computer after removal.

Since you know the virus name, google for a removal tool/instructions.

TBH, if you're the conscious and careful internet user, you really won't need antivirus.
