UBC student dies 2 days after drunk tank stay

This has been on the news and I kept expecting to see it on revscene, but I haven't. Did quick search didn't find anything either. I found this article extremely disturbing, and according to the timeline the student was in the drunk tank for a total of almost TEN hours. I don't think it takes ten hours to sober up. Again, its the police investigating the police.

A University of British Columbia student died suddenly two days after being released from jail in Whistler, B.C.
RCMP in Whistler arrested a 20-year-old UBC student from Saint John, N.B. on Tuesday, Feb. 23 just after 5 p.m. for being drunk in public.
He fell several times during while in custody, according to a Vancouver Police Department statement.
He was released at 3:30 a.m., and found unconscious at a UBC residence 23 hours later.
He died in hospital at about 1:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 26., said Const. Lindsey Houghton, from the Vancouver Police Department.
RCMP have asked Vancouver police to investigate the death. They took over the investigation Thursday, when the victim was still alive.
Houghton could not confirm the victim's name, though CBC reports it is Silas Rogers from Saint John.
Houghton told QMI Agency the cause of death has not yet been determined, and that police do not yet know whether or not foul play is suspected.
When asked if the death could be related Rogers' stay in a Whistler jail Houghton said, "These are questions that our investigation will want answers to."

I've never been in the drunk tank but 10 hours doesn't seem unreasonable to me. I'd be all for holding people for 24 hours so after they sober up they can sit there for a while as punishment for drinking like an idiot and think about how stupid drinking to that extent is. Unless the cops beat this guy and caused his death one thing really had nothing to do with the other IMO. If he passed out in an alley and then later died in his apartment or elsewhere that's really on the idiot drinking in extreme excess.

I also don't have a problem with them asking the question and investigating what really happened. If the police somehow lead to his death then that needs to be looked at but unless they beat him I don't see how.

There's no need to look further, he drank too much and died. It isn't rocket science. "oh maybe the cops did it"
No, maybe people are stupid and just die due to their own stupidity.
No one want's to take responsibility for anything anymore.

Or maybe the cops should have realized that there is something unusually wrong with him and send him to the hospital instead of the drunk tank?

He probably felt too painful/out of it to do anything at that point and the cops just assumed that he was just causing a scene...

GLOW 03-01-2010 10:41 AM

i'm no doctor, but could 1 possibility of his death be due to...alcohol poisoning? just throwing it out there.

He could have went to the hospital instead of back to his apartment when he got out. He was let out in the morning of the 24th and died on the 26th, that part is on him not the Popo.

Don't they have doctors and nurses that watch the people in drunk tanks?

23 hours is a long time, anything could of happened from the time he was released to when he was found dead. RIP.

bcedhk 03-01-2010 11:06 AM

maybe internal bleeding from the head pounding he got when he fell? Doctors wont be able to see it

I believe 8 hours is the min. amount they put you in the tank for.
I spent 10 hours in the Merritt drunk tank a couple years back..

No they don't and why should they? and 23 hours is not a long time to be in jail.

It's too bad he died but I predict that the media will soon hold the VPD responsible followed by public outcry for mistreatment and lack of responsibility.

Did you even read the article? He spent 10 hours in cells and he was found in his residence 23 hours after he was released.

I know the VPD has nurses for their cells, wondering if anyone knows whether the RCMP does as well.

noventa 03-01-2010 04:52 PM

when you are in the drunk tank do you have access to drinking water or the toilet?

TypeRNammer 03-01-2010 05:20 PM

Being in the drunk tank won't affect your record right?

Sorry I'm a noob at this :p

November 03-01-2010 05:28 PM

The police will throw you in the drunk tank as long as they "believe" you're drunk. They don't have any set of guidelines it seems.

I have a friend who got thrown in when he was sober just because someone told the police that he was drunk. Can he complain for unlawful arrest? Or detaining him without some kinda warrant?

They just throw you into the tank and sorta... leave you there. They don't really come back to check on you. No doctors or nurses.

He was in there for about 5 hours... 2AM - 7AM. And no, he didn't get offered any water or anything. People were pissing and puking on themselves in his cell, or passed out on the floor. Oh, and when they release you, your wallet will usually be missing about $100 or so. I know this because it's happened to 2 people I know.
