Every time I see an RS thread about hair cuts, I always think about a bunch of asian guys going to some metro salon to get their anime/Korean popstar/Abercrombie & Fitch draft-dodging hair cut.

I can't help but cringe sometimes when I see guys who walk around with hair like that.

thebluew 03-04-2010 10:53 PM

this thread reminds me of this LoL.

thebluew 03-04-2010 11:10 PM

I have to chime in here.
It looks like most of us agree that you should tip if the service directly affects you.
ie. food that goes inside your mouth, cutting hair that is on you.

I am fine with tipping as long as it's tip per good service. Otherwise, you would be promoting tipping for bad service.

Now as for what to tip for... think about this.
You order a drink, the worker gets paid $6/hr, and gets you that drink,
you pay $2 and don't tip because society says you don't have to tip. This is Mcds.

You order a drink, the worker makes more than $6/hr, and gets you that drink,
you pay $7 and you tip because society says you have to tip. This is in a club.
This is just F'ed up.

The valet gets your car and you tip.
The person that bags your groceries. Did you every tip?

Your hair stylist, you tip.
Your dentist, do you tip? What if they start messing up your teeth and do shoddy jobs?
Will that change your behavior in tipping your dentist now?

I have been to diners and restaurants in the states that do not tip period. I remember the bill came out to $21 and I gave them $30 and said just give me a $5 back.
When I stepped out the door. Yes. I stepped outside already. The waitress chased after me and said she gave me the wrong change and gave me the correct change back.

I'm not saying tipping is stupid but I believe in tipping per good service.
Now if you start arguing... no wayyyy you MUST tip cuz society says so, even if you receive crap service, then you got some serious issues.

Windstar 03-04-2010 11:26 PM

Being a hairstylist in training, it is logic to tip. If your hairstylist/barber does a service that blows you away, then the value of the service should be greater then what you are expected to pay.

1337 03-04-2010 11:26 PM

RSer's are a bunch of hypocrites. Read the tipping thread in the foods forum and most of them will say that tipping should only be given if the waiter/watiress goes beyond their job duties. So how is this any different?

EmperorIS 03-04-2010 11:29 PM

GRATUITY

Main Entry: gra·tu·ity
Pronunciation: \grə-ˈtü-ə-tē, -ˈtyü-\
Function: noun
Inflected Form(s): plural gra·tu·ities
Date: $$$$

: something given voluntarily or beyond obligation usually for some service; especially : tip

fliptuner 03-04-2010 11:32 PM

Saying please and thank you.... as well as failing you is also voluntary.

You are mixing up courtesy and gratitude

MG1 03-04-2010 11:47 PM

Some of you guys are pretty high maintenance.:p

fliptuner 03-04-2010 11:48 PM

You're mixing up the point of this thread.

Of course tipping is voluntary, otherwise, the OP's barber would have called the police on him.

if your going to lie, actually name a country that doesn't accept tips.

DasHooch 03-04-2010 11:59 PM

What if the barber is the owner and sets his own prices?

Here's a bad joke about service people being lucky, skip to 6:40

go to any restaurant... REGARDLESS if the service is good or bad.. why is it that all the servers will expect equally as much tips? clearly tips are not based on the quality of service anymore but an expected standard.

and why is it always the servers that get the most upset about their tips? how come the bussers that run around all night while the servers are chatting it up or the dish washers never complain? despite only getting 1-2% of their sales?

bathroom attendants: i understand your job is shitty. but im not going to give u $5 to hand me a paper towel. maybe if i want a piece of gum or spray of cologne sure. cough* fabric. i can't stand that guy. I don't even go to pee anymore because everytime i wash my hands he'll point to his tip jar and ask me to hook it up... and i fucking work there... tons of my friends complain about him too... thats wrong I don't think people should feel pressured to tip like that when they don't feel the need to

slip a 5 to the janitor who cleans up your shit next time u see him. the mcdicks graveyard shift worker. while you're at it tip everyone that does a service for u... if you don't you're clearly a cheapo...

no1 is arguing that tips r bs and no1 should tip... but if the service was bad... plz don't give me shit or attitude if i didnt tip the expected amount

all im saying is that there are clearly flaws in the tipping system and many of you who don't acknowledge that are hypocrits and hold double standards. and for the record i always tip well regardless of the quality of service.. if i cut my hair at a barber shop that trims it in 5 minutes.. I will tip 20% if I cut my hair at a stylist for $40 who gives me a back massage, hair wash while massaging my dome, paying attention to detail and flirt with me.. I will tip 20%. Ironic

Finaland, New Zealand, Spain, Korea, Japan, China. Many in the service industry will refuse your tips and are often suprised when you tip... some even offended. that being said... they DO accept tips.. its just not EXPECTED and its not a widely practiced custom

Im sure I missed many more countries... where the tipping custom is specific to different jobs. for instance in the UK bartenders don't expect tips.. and many other jobs in the service industry have adjusted wages or service fees included.

Just because you don't need to tip doesn't mean you shouldn't.

and 99% of the time if you were to tip in a country in which tipping is considered offensive I am sure that the person receiving the tip would acknowledge you are a foreigner and not be offended.

But then it comes back to quality. You shouldn't have to tip if the service/food, etc. is shit regardless of the country.

hotjoint 03-05-2010 08:30 AM

this is how I see it, tips should be earned not just given

illicitstylz 03-05-2010 09:10 AM

Well when you walk into a shop/hair salon/restaurant, you expect beyond good service regardless. As an employee, you are obligated/ asked to provide it.

The tip is considered a bonus, it is up to the discretion of the customer.

oddly enough the best way to make money on that job is just to sit on your phone and ignore people.

agreed. But if your going to the same barber and not tipping him at least buy him a christmas gift or something.

Greenstoner 03-05-2010 10:55 AM

my friend did a calculation for shit and giggles...
6 months, he tipped about 320 bucks .. lol

twitchyzero 03-05-2010 11:00 AM

I never tip the cab drivers...their rates are already expensive as it is. If you tip cab drivers, you better be tipping bus drivers.

I don't follow the theory that if one's dealing iwth your food/hair, a tip is pretty much mandatory.

If that's the case, you should be tipping 10% on-top of your $500 bill the next time you see your dentist.
