barber and tips
 

so, i got a haircut and i paid for the haircut. I gave the barber a $20 bill and he gave me $6 (1 toonie 4 loonies) I gave it some thought and I got confused.

He had all coins/bills in his cash register
Why did he not give me $6 ( 1 loonie 1 $5 bill)?

obviously i now know he wanted a tip for the haircut

but i did not give him a tip because i don't like throwing away my money.

I know most of you guys are used to tipping for service since you probably grew up here and it's like 2nd nature to you. To me, it's like throwing away my money and it is no different from let's say tipping a your cable installer, busdriver, teacher, tutor, and even the guy opening the door for you. Am I wrong for not tipping? Where do I draw the line whether to tip or not to tip.

WTF? tip your barber you cheap ass. hes cutting your damn hair you definitely want him to WANT to do a good job.

I used to pay $7 for my haircut and tip $3. You're paying way too much for a haircut.

true, its up to you but majority of the people will tip. You shouldnt feel bad if you dont want to tip. I hate people who expect any type of tip in their industry.

Where do you come from? Have you ever considered finding a barber that comes from the same place as you? That way he will be familiar with your customs.
Because here it is customary to tip certain customer service professions and there pay is structured as such.

I actually come from here in Ladner where everybody is caucasian. I just find it disturbing to know that if I don't tip for service, the service I get next time might not be adequate for what I paid for. For example, tipping in a restaurant might save you from getting your food spat on next time or serving you a plate you did not order. In the case of barber, he might purposely hurt you while cutting your hair.

I believe tipping should be reserved for an actual "well done" compliment. It seems that it is becoming customary to the point where it is mandatory to tip leaves no room to really give a thanking compliment for the service.

It's just another damn trick to get your money. no joke

I agree with you. This concept was so foreign to me until I experienced living in countries other than ones in North America.

I tip however as it's customary here, whether the service was exceptional or mediocre.

I always tip my stylist $5, been going to her for 6 years now.

I go to a stylist, so of course it will cost more. Barber are usually cheaper because they just cut your hair short etc. Back then tips were invented for economic stimulation or low waging jobs that needed a boost. I can see where this is coming from, a lot and I mean a lot of places now really expects people to tip. I work in a restaurant so I would know, people nowadays just tip for services and good products. It's quite true when your saving money, tips can be a burden and it can add up in difficult times. Especially when your going to a expensive restaurant paying $100 dollars for a group of friends meal then ending up paying 10-20%, this can be a burden and financially uneconomical. But this doesn't consider yourself selfish, but rather we humans are strafing for survival. Your entire existence depend on money now unfortunately, it's really up to you.

Tipping for services has become almost mandatory in this society, I agree, but how much to tip is really up to the person. Dining out and having someone waiting on your feet to serve you I consider is quite the luxury (although some probably wouldn't agree because we're so accustomed to it). I think a person heading out to a restaurant should expect to tip for service, nevertheless someone who's heading to their barber's.

I am a generous tipper and a I will tip according to the service I get. But that being said I wish we are a place where tipping is not mandatory, expected, doesn't exist, etc. like japan..

And wasn't there a thread where some couple got arrested for not tipping due to shitty ass service? They were arrested because it was considered stealing or something.. mandatory tips these days...

i throw my barber an extra $5 every now and then. ive been going to the same guy for over 13 years.

i've been to the same hair salon and stylist for the past 5 years, and she is very friendly and we always share cool stories together.. thats why as a gratitude i will tip her 15% at least.

besides, you get your hair cut every month or 2 (depending), so tipping 3-5 bucks to a hair stylist isn't that much. I rather tip my hairstylist than to waiters,, all waiters do is bring you dishes and anyone can do that....

Tipping the barber is a Western custom. Saying you're "not used to it" just means you've always been a cheap ass.

I usually tip 50-80% for my hairstylist. And no it isn't your regular 10-20 haircut. :)

i pay 14$ for my haircut, and then pay with a 20... and i call it even, the girls at my salon are always friendly and share cute little stores beyond "just the weather" and i went to high school with them

Do you think I could look at my barber in the eyes and say truthfully "Thank you for your service" then leave feeling good about my haircut? What would my barber feel when I feel real good about my haircut leaving his barber?
