Canada to switch to plastic bills next year 2011

Quote:

They say money doesn't grow on trees. Well, the federal government has taken that adage to heart — it announced earlier this week that Canada's paper-cotton banknotes would be replaced by newly designed plastic ones next year.

It's part of a plan to modernize and protect Canadian currency against counterfeiting.

The new plastic bills, made from a polymer material, are harder to fake, recyclable, and two to three times more resistant to tearing, the Bank of Canada said.

Australia has used polymer banknotes since the 1990s, and an Australian company will provide the material for Canada. Several other countries have adopted polymer banknotes including New Zealand, Vietnam and Romania.

The new notes won't be in circulation until sometime in 2011. In the meantime, the central bank is keeping mum on what the new bills will look like.

"I can't divulge that information because they will be issued in about 18 months — that's a long ways away," said Bank of Canada spokesperson Julie Girard. "We want to keep a little bit of information from potential counterfeiters so they don't get a leg up and start producing any counterfeits."

CBC News wanted to get some local Canadians' impressions of the polymer bills. Reporter Sandra Abma took an Australian banknote and a classic cotton-paper Canadian bill and asked people on the streets of Ottawa to compare. The opinions were mixed.

"It would be easier to lose, I think," said one woman, after rubbing her fingers on the polymer bill. "It's soft and smooth and it could slide out easier."

"This feels like Monopoly money actually," said a young man. "It's like I took this out of a board game and then went to buy Timmy's with it."

it is cool in Aus cause you can go swimming and have the cash in your pocket and it doesn't get wrecked. But here? I dunno the Americans are really going to make fun of are play money now.

mr.rakkar 03-06-2010 02:12 PM

pesos are the same thing, if your money gets wet they harsh stick together and it gets annoying to take them apart

JSALES 03-06-2010 02:17 PM

i don't like this idea

underscore 03-06-2010 02:19 PM

our money is pretty durable when wet already. I wonder how this plastic stuff will stand up to, say, a dryer?

also why are we buying the stuff from Aussies? or can we not make it at all?

Glaedr 03-06-2010 02:19 PM

Hmmm, this will be interesting, I work for a Bank so wonder what new counterfeit features them bills going to have.

Haha American's are ones to speak, their bills are fugly and look the same, i find way more US counterfeit bills then Canadian bills

i wonder what the material be like, it is gonna be like Vietnamese money?

bubba_g 03-06-2010 02:25 PM

I've been to Australia and NZ, couldn't even tell the money was plastic when I used until I got home and read up on it. No wonder all the bills had a clear plastic section on it, I originally thought its like our hologram to authenticate the bill. They feel like paper bills and waterproof too.

Meowjin 03-06-2010 02:26 PM

i think it's sweet. I used it in vietnam, and never had a problem.

^im against u on this one
i hated vietnamese money, the plastic material makes the money stick together so miscounting happened to me alot and generally made it harder to count money

TRD Rs200 03-06-2010 02:35 PM

some HK $10's are plastic, they're very durable

RollingStone 03-06-2010 02:38 PM

I've used Australian currency and they feel much more durable than paper. Also them being recyclable is a big plus.

monkeywrench 03-06-2010 02:52 PM

^lol at the turkey one

Benz_05TSX 03-06-2010 03:33 PM

WTF... then we will have like surfer money, our money can't get wet when we surf!! hahahhaa

From Simpsons:
Brazillian Kidnapper opening suitcase full of money: Look at all that pink and purple! Our money sure is gay.

StylinRed 03-06-2010 03:48 PM

i h8 it when the govt messes with a good thing (like the potential anthem change)

especially with plastic.... its "recyclable" but not as recyclable as our paper/linen currrency
and its definitely not environmentally friendly, what about "climate change".
plastic requires oil.. i thought we were "running out"
and if more countries use plastic wouldn't that mean our fuel prices go up?!

blah blah blah -_-

nack 03-06-2010 03:50 PM

i wander how big they are, if its like a poster board, i'd rather carry coins around
