If I had a few minutes to live I wouldn't even reply to this thread but instead I would be browsing the NWS forums.

why are people comparing a rapid transport subway trains to high speed rail?

i'm with toeknee on this one...too many jumping to the conclusions that this will be unsafe etc

i'm surprised china didn't develop one until now..and now they are already getting into the meglev sector? admissions is gonna be crazy high.

high speed rails are a cool feat..knowing you are travelling at 330km/h+ on the ground and it still feels pretty smooth..i've been on japan and taiwan's shinkansen's and hopefully will get to try some of the ones in europe.

edit:
imagine a head on collision = 1,200 km/h!

What!? This has happened MANY times.

I can think of 2 examples off the top of my head.

a) Mercedes-Benz CD changers. Same design, same model number. Manufacturing was split between Europe (mostly Hungary if I remember correctly), and China. Guess which ones died repeatedly. Talked to my friend who works for MB in Shenzhen, and he said at the moment that so far the only parts actually being manufactured in China for the Chinese market are trim pieces and the "lower level" electronics. Everything else is still being imported.

b) FAO Schartz, makers of those premium Teddy Bears. Can't find the article right now (it was on either CNN or Time) but basically the Chinese couldn't make 'em right. The problem is that if the eyes of the bears are even off by 1mm, the face either looks lopsided or "not cute" anymore. Customers were noticing and they were losing sales. Not sure if they ended up pulling out at the end though.

Yes. I'm sure the Skytrain engineers are kicking themselves for not looking into the future to compete with technology two and a half decades away.

on a side note, I don't think the engineers were trying to make it go 500km/h
