If you're going the mac route. Don't spend more for ram or hd size. You can upgrade those cheaper non-oem. Refurbished laptops are even better deals; add warranty and theres really no difference.

If you truly want a Mac, I'd wait a bit, as the new lineup is rumoured to be announced in a few days. For what you want to do, I'd actually go for the 15" Mac, as it has (apparently) a higher gamut screen which will help you with your photo editing, but the current model's glossy screen while beautiful are too shiny for photo editing. The new models might have an option for a matte screen. I myself bought a 17" Macbook Pro with a matte screen because it was the only laptop that fit my needs of a big screen, high colour gamut, high resolution (1920x1200), power & portability. It's a dream to use for photo & video editing, and the thin & light form factor was what sealed the deal for me - no other 17" laptop came close to the 1" thickness & 6.6 lbs weight. I do not miss Windows at all. It's not perfect by any means, but it's an impressive machine. Also, poke around in the refurbished section of the Apple Canada store. There are good deals to be had there.

Cnet has a very favourable review on the Asus U30Jc-A1 here: http://reviews.cnet.com/laptops/asus...?tag=mncol;lst They did complain about the weight of the Asus, which I thought was excessively heavy.

In my opinion, a 13" screen is too small for photo & HD video editing though.

no, at least wait until the new MBP starts selling

because the current MBP is at the end of its lifetime

and because the graphics card on the 13" MBP is so old and shitty, it will not play current games anywhere near normal graphics setting.

Not to mention core2duo is currently being replaced by quad cores. And 160/250 gb is even smaller than the 250gb MB, it is such a obvious sign that apple is releasing new MBP very soon

Oh and the 13" is really small for photo editing and movies.

thanks for the feedback you guys, yea i've been thinking about getting the 15" instead of the 13" since the 13" is kinda small.
i'm definitely wait around for a bit and see what apple might come up next.

+1 for optimus. spending a grand on i3 is just too much tho. get at least an i7. and there are different models of i7 fyi, look up a mobile cpu chart.

I recently bought the 13 inch MBP with the higher features and i must say, it's def a great upgrade from my 17 inch Acer laptop. Yea, it's smaller but considering the fact that i have to carry it around nearly 5 days a week for school and such, it's def a upgrade for the better.

Battery life on Macs are SO much better than Windows, and also the charger is like 5 times smaller and lighter than that of a windows laptop
size-wise, mbp is so much lighter.
I had win7 before this and i loved that, but mac is def user-friendly as well, considering this is my first mac since using it back in high school nearly 5 years ago...
And considering I had a 17inch before, i dont think 13inch is that small at all, sometimes i barely even notice the differences. But I personally prefer this size rather than my 17 inch because its just more convenient to carry around and stuff.

I could've gotten the 15 inch, but it was too big for my liking considering how often i need to carry it in my bag with books.

if you are seriously considering a mac, just hold out, again, due to c2d being close to obsolete. Its rare for Apple to "fall behind", but if you are set on a mac, in which i believe you are, then wait

if not, pick up an i-core PC laptop and you will be just as happy.

As for apple genius bar service, I had my laptop repaired no problem 3yrs out of warranty, I got a HDD replaced...and backed up data for free...they treated me very well.

Im gonna buy the new macs when they come out, its time to retire my ancient one

ive got the 13" 4gb MBP. Honestly i love it. OSX is way better than Windows in my honest opinion.
but like others have said, most computers are coming out with quadCore, so you can wait and see when Apple will do the same with the MBP.
All in all i dont regret dropping nearly $2k for mine. and since using the OSX i actually hate going on Windows operated cpu's.

If you're gonna carry it around a lot, you can also buy the 13" and plug it into an external monitor at home for video editing, etc.

The vid out cable costs a lot from Apple, though, but I think there's cheaper no-name brand ones.

I would agree with you if not for my HD dying after 3 months. Gotta say Apple Care service is really efficient - they had my MBP ready in an hour! Luckily, I have double redundancy backups so it wasn't a big deal.

Windows on the other hand you can google and DIY
That's just a stupid thing to say. You'd bust any laptop if you drop it on the ground. DIY? How many different Windows laptops are there on the market? A few hundred? How big of a community is there for each individual one that can teach you how to replace parts and such?

How many Apple laptops are there? Five? The community is massive. I took mine apart and installed a new HD with ease.

I've owned several Sony laptops and they're all crap. Sure, they look great but you always get the sense that they're not quite working right...plus they come with all kinds of garbage installed that if you remove, it works even worse.

Not exactly sure I can say that to all VAIO, but all high-end VAIOs are fucking awesome. I had the Z serie and it's hands down the best lappy to travel around I've ever owned.

The VAIO P is also the only netbook that makes sense to me. With SSD, that thing eats any netbook you can mention.

The new unibody Macbook Pro's are pretty tough. They can withstand a drop off a table no problem. I know of at least 2 clients that did it, and they were fine. Apple also takes good care of you as long as you're within the warranty period.

Having said that, I have an old 10 year old VAIO that is still going strong after numerous bumps and abuse, so it seems the Sony's are built well too. My 4 year old 17" HP laptop while still working is suffering from a dimming screen and does not seem as well built as my other laptops.

I had a Z650 and although the extremely thin screen was very cool, it felt very flimsy. Plus there's all sorts of garbage regarding the wireless utilities on Sony laptops. You can get a completely clean install going but you never get everything working like it should.

MacBooks are incredibly well built, especially the current unibody models. If you've ever held one, you can attest to the build quality.

I'm using the 13 inch after selling my black macbook. Having used various Vaios, Thinkpads, Toshiba, Compaq and HP laptops, 3 Dells and 2 Asus laptops, i definately have to say that the Macbook Pro 13 inch is probably the best constructed one I've used.
The worst in construction that I've used are the Vaios, the Compaq and HP laptops.
