too bad theyre still worth a shiny penny. i've seen some 996 conv's for less than 30k... maybe give those a look..? you cant resist the sound of a porsche when driving with a top down.

I would love to own a convertible with a gangster flat 6 sound track! However, I do work for a large energy company with a HUGE focus on energy conservation. All the VPs and Supervisors roll around in cute little Priuses and Highlander Hybrids. I honestly don't think it is appropriate for me to cruise around in a gas-guzzling Porsche. :haha: With this in mind, I am straying away from the Z4M for the time being. I'm not overly concerned with maintenance costs, and I am well aware of the Inspection 2 costs. I mean you gotta pay to play right?

2010 MX5 GT PRHT is a 40k car. If you pay cash, it drops to $34k. There are a few demo 2010s going for $30-32k in the lower mainland. They won't budge to drop the price below $30k, so I will have to resort to importing one myself.

I drove a 2006 AP2 yesterday. I absolutely love rev-ving the crap out of this thing! I thought my old GTI with a R32 shifter was awesome, but the s2k unit puts my vw to uttershame. The soundtrack is amazing but I do notice the following:

-the car is effing loud (both with top up +down)
-the radio is pretty pathetic with the top down (the bose on the MX5 is actually surprisingly good)
-this thing needs a lot of revs to cruise between 120-130 (avg speed on the coq hwy)... from my recollection, a 6spd mx5 needs 3300rpm to cruise around 120-125.. the s2k needs even moAR

Oh, and I will not consider the SC430... It's a fricking boat, and it comes with an autotragic tranny (I will only drive an 'auto' if the unit is a DSG box)

z4-M would be probably be the best choice if you want to drop mad cash and receive comfort, speed, looks and status symbol, i really like s2k too but when i got a ride in my friends ap2, for a long drive, the cabin noise was really getting on my way. and yes the seats werent too comfortable either.. havnt been in a mx5 yet so cant say anything about that car

After 1 hour you will go nuts as it has virtually no sound proofing, 30 minutes if you have an aftermarket exhaust. S2000 are fun cars but is pretty much just a toy to use for fun, although a very reliable toy.

It is not bad as you think and you will get use to it. You would also be able to maintain a conversation with your passenger.

hmmm now im surprised no one ever mentioned domestics... you could pick up a Sky redline for under 30k nowadays... same goes for solstice (although the interior still looks cheap)

yes actually i do know what RPM im @, partly because i drive it to SFU quite often. at 130, im doing 4300rpms in 6th. And ive been able to have a steady conversation with friend in the car without having to raise my voice.

Partly because the image associated with domestics are still shit. Not to mention where the hell would you get your car fixed under warranty? as there is no pontiac now or saturn?

Uhhh, pretty much ANY GM dealership...

^

what he said

GM covers them all

I think the Sky looks really good. But I dunno if there's anything with the roof but almost all the Skys I see have very wrinkly/loose roof. Maybe it's just me.

Marioo1991 04-27-2010 01:40 PM

the saturn sky would probably be sluggish... its pretty heavy and doesnt have a lot of power...

Fafine 04-27-2010 01:52 PM

M POWA!

too_slow 04-27-2010 01:54 PM

^Err.. WTF

I really want to like the Sky! But the seats aren't that comfy.. The top is manual (you need to get out of the car to close it).. On a MX5 soft-top, you can do it from the drivers seat.. And the boot is stupidly small.. In a MX5 I can store a carry-on and a small laptop bag.. In a Sky, I can barely fit a laptop bag in it!!

not to mention, ppl want crazy money for the Sky Redline (see the silver RS ad).. The funny thing is, the guy lives in the same neighborhood as me..

tofu1413 04-27-2010 02:37 PM

sky redline still looks the best out of all the listed convertibles imo...

(and it wont be sluggish either.. 260hp 2.4 direct injected turbo! )

should give a couple calls around town to look for one

do an opel conversion... ;)

too_slow 04-27-2010 03:14 PM

It's actually a 2.0T ecotec engine
The NA 2.4 engine is torquey, but isn't anywhere near as rev-happy as the MX5 and S2k..

And the trunk is an issue for me since I can barely fit anything for my trips from kelowna/vancouver.. :(

tofu1413 04-27-2010 03:16 PM

isnt there some kind of roof rack option for those cars...?? ahhaha

lol, on a soft top?

tofu1413 04-27-2010 04:01 PM

i believe there was..

i think it mounted on the area ABOVE the trunk. if i recall..

RabidRat 04-28-2010 02:46 AM

i can't believe you guys are complaining about cabin noise in the s2k. especially with a stock exhaust. have i accidentally logged onto tea-time.net? you should all buy a lexus and be done with it :p

Exactly lol. It has about the same noise level as a late 80s early 90s japanese car.

i was referring to the one with 17x hp, i know the red line would be better, but isnt it much more pricy than the other cars considered?

josel_atr 04-28-2010 07:18 AM

OP get an s2k and call it a day.

I would vote s2k too but not if its going to mainly be a highway cruiser... nothing worse than a loud car on the highway

or just buy a car and call it a day

josel_atr 04-28-2010 10:30 AM

for the record, when i had a 350z roadster, i dont remember road noise/loudness during cruising. i took it down to seattle a few times. all i heard was its quiet exhaust note that we all know about.
