Anything over 500 fps (feet/sec) requires a firearm license to own.
And I believe bb guns aren't to be used for hunting because they are generally not strong
enough to painlessly kill an animal. (instant death)
Unless you have a firearm license with a 1000 fps + bb gun rifle...
But you probably shouldn't be shooting animals anyway.

If your property is large enough, I don't think it's illegal.
I shoot the wild rabbits & squirrels at my uncle's place (He's got 6 acres) with my .177 all the time... Otherwise the little bastards overrun the garden.

and it probably won't kill the bird...maybe only just scare them away from his property
