crabbing in van

other than on hastings street or king george hwy, where is a good spot to catch crabs in vancouver?

i know most spots are over-crabbed... was hoping someone could speak from experience on a place that they've gone recently and have had good success with legal sized male crabs.

discuss

All the crab spots are full of mainlanders and koreans. They often illegally sneak home few under size crabs.

Stay away from the crab spots and go further out the sea with a boat (even a inflatable one) you can probably get handful of good size crab in no time. :D

Rent a boat and go for a fishing and crabbing trip from Horseshoe bay is a nice get away too.

If you don't have a boat, you can always try Belcarra, White Rock, or Marine park for crab spots. If you dont have any luck on the day, stop by T&T and buy yourself a big crab on the way home and make youserlf feel better

Belcarra? but prepare to catch none in the summer cause the freaking deck is packed!!!! lol

hirevtuner 04-29-2010 11:32 AM

isn't most of the waters in Vancouver too polluted for crabbing or fishing?
i remember going to new brighton park on Hastings st and the water is pretty dark

It's illegal to crab between the Lion's Gate and the Iron Workers Bridges, but just to the east of the Iron Worker's, there is a little underwater plateau where Dungeness Crabs congregate. You'll need a depthfinder though. :)

There is no crabbing after sundown, at least for Jericho beach and Ambleside.

Went to Ambleside last summer, 2 mainlander ladies took 2 superstore(cloth bags) worth of crabs all sizes each. I called the hotline but the ladies left right after since it started raining. Honestly Asian people ruin the fun of crabbing and fishing =T

Definitely, if you have enough people to rent a boat.

My dad stopped crabbing in Belcarra 5 years ago. Even when pushes his traps further out with a boat, people on other boats steals his loot and sometimes his traps.

I caught quite a bit of legally sized crabs at the pier in White Rock years ago with my high school friends. There is a store right on the beach front that sells Canada Fisheries licenses for the day -- I think they're about $13?
Most crabs come out at night, and using raw chicken meat was the best bait -- just tie some chicken thighs onto a crab trap's wire mesh, and after 20 minutes or so there should be a bunch of crabs.

IA. Chicken meat works well. But why use thighs when you can use the bones that you can buy at the supermarkets for half the price? They work just as well.

me and a buddy went to someplace in north van, i think it was called deep cove?
it was so fun.. we took the boat from there all the way to stanley park, although we later found out that we weren't suppose to cross the area after the ironworkers bridge cuz on the way back we had the coast guard following us and saying something thru their megaphone lol
