When I listened to rap...

1. 2pac

2. Dre
3. Nas
4. Biggie
5. Snoop
6. Puffy
7. Eminem
8. The Game
9. Too Short
10. Cypress Hill
11. Bone Thugs
12. Big Pun
13. Ludacris
14. LL
15. Fabolous

The only rap artist whose songs still occasionally make it onto my playlist is pac... he is just so much better than everyone else in all regards. Pretty obvious from everyone's list here too that he is the greatest rapper of all time by a mile. (Partly due to his untimely death but partly due to his perfect combination of talent, anger, and intelligence).

Hate to sound cliche, but there really isn't any good mainstream rap anymore. IMO the Chronic 2001 / early days of Eminem was the 'final hurrah' for quality mainstream rap music. 50 Cent, Mike Jones, Young Jeezy, Lil Wayne... they just don't cut it compared to the quality stuff of yester-year. I'm sure hardcore hip-hop fans will disagree and point out Kanye, Talib, Jay-Z, Common etc but I just think as a whole the rap scene is dead. (Notice that top-40 hits have way less hardcore rap now and way more alternative and EDM etc).

I agree and disagree with this statement, G-Unit made good "mainstream" music. Im not going to front and say i didn't like "Candy Shop" and "Just a Lil Bit" when i was drunk and just wanted party music to listen to. Now since their gone and its replaced by soulja boy it just makes me SMH that some people actually listen to that garbage.

Also... how the fuck can Diddy make anyone's list

^he was joking.. who puts ja rule as #1? i dont even consider that to be hip hop. ja rule is pop music meant for the radio.

just because pac is clearly the most popular here, doesnt mean hes the goat.

the fact that you have puffy and fabolous in your list pretty much discredits everything you just said.

At the same time you gotta take a step backwards and see the thread is titled "YOUR top 10 rappers". Most of us have the same rappers on their list, but if he wants to throw in puffy, fab, or the moffats for whatever reason, that just means that's who you are most likely to see on his playlist.

Arguing about who is better than who is just a waste of time and "discrediting" someone for having someone you don't agree with on their list is very ignorant like. All this shit is very subjective anyways.

Oo and let me add maestro in case no one has said him.

^i completely agree with you.
i know im a little narrow minded when it comes to hip hop, but i've listened to it all, and i hate to see bad rappers get credit and good ones not get any.
it just kills me because its that sort of thing that pretty much killed hip hop.

Agreed.

Watch the final episode of MTV Raps, in 1994 or 1995 I believe:

Now imagine what that would be like today... Just imagine the clowns they would have on there, and what they would be acting like.

^ I barely listened since 2003ish but only reason i replied to the thread is cause I recently found my old rap cd binder with all original 2pac,meth,dpg,public enemy etc. Lol nothing feels finer than popping one of those classics as you drive.

Some interesting lists. I am sure a top ten wont do it, because once I start going through all my old tapes, you start hearing stuff and going “oh my god, that guy was awesome.”

Heres a bit of a list though. Some are groups.

Mad Skillz (just skills now I believe)
EPMD
Wu-Tang
Atmosphere
Rakim and Eric B
Jay Z
Maestro Fresh Wes
BIG
Gangstarr
hieroglyphics

Honorable mentions (and some that just popped into my head with some great tracks)

Sadat X
OutKast
House of Pain (people give me shit about this, but listen to “Truth Crushed to earth”, Everlast is great)
Pete Rock and CL Smooth
TuPac (before death row)
Run DMC
Beastie Boys
Biz Markie

I have a gym bag full of old cassettes stored in a closet somewhere. Now I need to find a tape player to play them on…….

There will never be another ODB

Did anyone else read the Source in the early 90's? I remember reading about all these up and coming artists like "Notorious BIG" and "Wu Tang Clan" and finding out about music that way.. And I'd get in a lot of shit for calling their hotline to check out the latest tracks.. Oh man to have internet back then would have been nice

Seriously, no shoutouts to the female rappers? Everyone from MC Lyte... to Salt N' Pepa... or Latifah... and of course the "Ill Na Na"? I was a fan of E-V-E as well.

I saw half the artists mentioned at the Rock the Bells concert a couple years ago. Sickkkk lineup.
