Because gaming is better on a PC 99% of the time.

^Truth.

Computers get outdated fast though. Gaming studios are always pushing the specs higher and higher to get the best visual experience. Then again, you could always play on low settings all the times.

^^ I don't think most game developers are pushing the specs that far anymore. The time of crysis style development is over. Most of the popular games are multiplatformed and are developed console side first and then ported over to pc.

Exactly, games haven't progressed much since the XBOX 360/PS3. If you are running in the same resolution as consoles, you don't even need a card that is more than $99

But the key is that we want to play in crazy high resolutions with a lot of beautiful filtering to make the graphics look even better than they already do

I got a xbox and ps3 the only thing I ever use is the ps3 for movies and NHL.

Hahaha yeah that's why I don't even bother reading about the newest hardware out there. All it's going to do is make me spend money trying to max out all the settings in games.

the advice others have given, getting a dual core with a very good vid card, doesn't work here. i have no idea why.

i have a phenom 955 with an old 8800GS 384mb and i'm running it at high. check the battlefield forums and such and it's unanimous that quad cores are almost necessary for decent fps.

if you get a decent cpu like a 955/i5, you could get away with a 4770 for your vid card, or even 9800GT.

also be aware you can get certain amd chips with 2/3 cores and unlock the 4th. do some research on that, it's pretty sweet as you essentially get a quad core for a super low price. i contemplated this, but didn't want to risk it.

I have a 9800 gt for my computer right now, I was wondering if I could use it on an ATI crossfire board like the one in my setup. I am just saving enough for a good vid card

That only makes sense if that it literally the only game he'll play. If 99% of the other games benefit more from a better GPU, then he is better off spending money there instead.

yeah it's pretty much all i play at the moment. and if anything new comes out i can always upgrade my vid card and sell the old one.

but i can't really think of many games coming out that has me really excited other than the star wars mmo and maybe diablo 3. can't wait for battlefield 3!

I run the i7 920 with a 4890 +6gb Corsair Dominator for BFBC2. I get zerooo lag. My only lag comes from connection problems through the server.

No overclock + stock fans etc. Zero temp problems in a stuffy room.

he got a slower processor and less core because he is overclocking.
IMO
You should get an i3 i5 or something similar from amd

the amd x4 965 quad core processor is only dollars shy of the new amd x6 phenom II 1055t.

I'm literally ordering my computer as well tonight and since it's only a few dollars off, might as well upgrade to the x6, since it will be more " futureproof "

Build list (most items price matched, subject to change depending on tonight's ncix sale)

-AMD Phenom II X6 1055T Thuban 6 Core Processor 2.8GHZ Socket AM3 Retail Box $212.95
-MSI 890GXM-G65 mATX AM3 890GX+SB850 DDR3 2PCI-E16 1PCI-E 1PCI SATA Audio Video GBLAN Motherboard $114.95
-Antec Three Hundred Mini Tower Gaming Case 300 ATX 3X5.25 6X3.5INT No PS Front USB & Audio $53.99
-Thermaltake TR2 600W ATX12V V2.2 24PIN Power Supply with 120MM Fan $57.10 (looking for an upgrade)
-Western Digital Caviar Black 640GB SATA3 6GB/S 7200RPM 64MB Cache 3.5IN Dual Proc Hard Drive OEM $59.99
-G.SKILL F3-12800CL9D-4GBRL Ripjaws PC3-12800 4GB 2X2GB DDR3-1600 CL9-9-9-24 Core i5 1.5V Memory Kit $108.29
-Samsung SH-S243D/BEBE 24X Black DVD Writer SATA OEM $19.99

Subtotal $647

Looking for:
- 1920x1280 monitor, 2ms response time
- video card (ati 5770)
- aftermarket heatsink ? ( x6 can be oc'd up to 4ghz )
- better PSU
