winamp's buggy?? i've been using it since... high school lol. what do you do on it that's buggy?

i use k-lite mega (install w/ "lots of stuff") for all videos, and vlc for previewing not yet finished downloading videos if a sample is not provided.

perhaps you're using winamp to play your videos?

VLC Media Player.

Hands down, the best thing there is out there. Plays just about everything

what the player can play or can't play depends on what codecs u install and use.

I use KM Player and k-lite mega (install w/ "lots of stuff") except the player....

http://kmplayer.en.softonic.com/
http://www.codecguide.com/download_kl.htm

you can play basically anything after you install the k-lite mega codec

KMPlayer for videos. Nothing gives you more control over codecs (I HATE codec packs) and rendering engines, etc. Good interface.

For h.264 I use CoreAVC, sometimes DivX
For AVI I use DivX

For audio, I use AC3 Filter, and DivX AAC

For music, I use Windows Media Player. It does a great job of sorting oout all my music in a fast interface. For syncing my ipods and playing the odd mp3, I use Winamp.

I just prefer more control over everything, and only want to install what I will actually use. Things like codecs can really be 'messy' too, the way filters and dlls are registered.

When I'm setting things up for family and friends though, I just install k-lite for them

only idiots use the k-lite codec pack (or any codec pack for that matter). it destroys systems and messes up registry, not to mention it's technically warez since it redistributes commercial software.

all you have to do is get ffdshow, haali splitter and ac3filter and you can literally play everything without installing a stupid amount of crap into your system from k-lite.

of course, you could go for something like vlc or kmplayer that manages its codecs internally.

Pretty much all you need now is DivX 7 and AC3Filter if you use Win7. This covers AVI, MKV, MP4, MOV, MPEG-2, AC3, DTC, Dolby, AAC, MP3, etc, all within the default Windows Media Player.

I use windows media player 10 (I hate 11) for music and videos.
It plays like 99% of the stuff. For the 1%, I use VLC.

I'm actually looking for a media player that can scan by just pressing
the <- and -> arrow keys. It's a bit annoying when I need to rewind
a part I just missed, but I have to click on that scroll, and then end up
going 2 minutes back.

it destroys systems? messes up the registry? warez? what?

I can appreciate the advantages of vlc or kmplayer, but aren't you blowing this out of proportion?

how do you play rmvb's? oh and please don't comment on the codec, i wasn't asking about that.

MPC for videos.
iTunes for music. WMP for single mp3 files since that is the default player.

I just use WMP as the player. It's a familiar interface and I'm far too lazy to use anything else. I'll use Winamp or Foobar for FLAC encoded content.

I just throw on Xvid codec, AC3Filter and CoreAVC for x264 content. That combination plays almost everything out there.

As for codec packs, I usually don't use them since the above covers almost everything that's out there. However, if I'm building a system for someone, then I'll usually just throw on CCCP. They're good for newbie type users who just "want it to work" without having to do too much work. I personally prefer having some control over what gets loaded and try to avoid any "excess" that isn't required.
