After talking to the neighbours, we find out that Mike Anderson from the City engineering service is just a frontman put ther by the mayor Greg Robinson and his sidekick Jerry Dobrovolny city engineer. E-mail mike Anderson is like listening to city cycling advertising. Primary purpose of the median barrier is reduce traffic for cyclist. Their safety is important, so the residents just have to suffer the incovenence. But do E-mail him and mayorandcouncil@Vancouver.ca and get a reply mail. The mayor and his lackey is trying to push through hoping no one fight back. I ask how many people complain and the city want me to think I am the only one. Don't let them fool you. Almost everyone in the neighbourhood want the barrier gone. We just have to find out how to present the polling stats. I am trying to get the waverley school parents and teachers to talk about the increase traffic along 46th. The school zone is the only alternative route to get around the barrier without going 4 blocks away. Hopefully it get put on the agenda in september. Somehow I got the feeling the timing is on purpose. Barrier went up just after last PT meeting before summer break... Posted via RS Mobile |
Meeting with Michael Klassen from City Caucus and Global News and CKNW News I wish to thank everyone that came to the Friday June 25, 2010 meeting. Not only the neighbours that I met during my Tuesday walk around Margarets St. showed up, but also many other that heard about the meeting and decide to come. I told Michael Klassen from Citycaucus that there would be "a few" residents that are willing to come out and share the story on Friday afternoon. We were overwhelm by the 25+ people that show up. This is huge considering that I only talked to about 30 neighbours and most are not available on early Friday afternoon. Michael contacted Global TV News and CKNW News when he realizes this is a big story that affect many many residents. CKNW and Global News Cameraman was gracious to interview several residents and hear our side of story. What make it even better is we also have cyclists view on camera and tape recording. Everyone hates the median barrier. The cyclists said it is so dangerous to cross the intersection now that they have to wait once at the stop sign and once more at the median barrier before able to cross the intersection. This is not just about the cyclists being at risk, but also any parents with stroller trying to cross Clarendon. With the 4 Ways STOP signs before, the vehicle speed is around 30km/hr near the intersection. Now the speed that vehicles drive down that stretch of Clarendon is around 60km/hr. If you ask me, it is clear which traffic pattern is safer. Many people probably wondering what will happen next? We are planning to raise the median barrier issue during the Waverley Parents/Teachers meeting in September. We are going to ask the school Principal to consider open the meeting to the public like a "townhall" meeting, so all neighbourhood residents can come and voice their concerns. We will also invite Michael Klassen from Citycaucus, Global TV News and CKNW news to the "town hall" meeting. We estimate that we would have at least a few hundreds concern parents/teachers/residents at the meeting. With the show of group force, we are confident that we can force the Mayor/City Engineering Services to back down and dismantle the median barrier. I will update this blog and tell the neighbourhood once all the "townhall" meeting detail are confirmed. Thanks everyone! |
That looks like an ideal spot for a traffic circle. |
i'm in the neighbourhood and want it gone.. are there barriers at 45th and rupert as well? it's right turn only for some time now..i dindt realize it until few weeks ago |

Lol, today I was driving towards the intersection while going north on Elliot. And I saw a cop car on 45th, he turned on his signal then did a left turn on to the opposite lane and then cut to the right side of the road, then turned off his signal. |
stupid cops |
So... now that people are starting to get used to this change, the city has decided to make another change! According to their data collected by those wires on the road, they have discovered there is an increase in speed along Elliot (NO SHITTT people dont have to stop at 45th anymore, stupid city planners). So they plan on adding BACK the 2 stop signs they removed, so cars will have to stop at the intersection before continuing, which would make cars travel slower next to the school since they are starting from a stop. But we all know this isn't going to work, theres going to be a lot of people rolling those stop signs, and im thinking there will be a few accidents too from people traveling on Elliot and not realizing the city added back those stop signs. Honestly that intersection looks like a piece of crap, too much going on. Coles Notes: - 45th and Elliot will go back to being a 4 WAY STOP - Barriers will STILL be there - Prepare for people rolling the stop signs on Elliot No date has been set, so these could go up anytime soon. Hopefully by the end of the trial, supposedly end of november, they will realize this was a stupid idea to begin with and with the amount of people complaining, they will remove the barriers. The citys goal, apparently, is to remove ALL traffic from this area...like wtf? Source: Waverly Elementary School PAC meeting, Sept. 22, 2010 |
honestly i've gotten used to the barriers and i dont mind it anymore. it makes traffic flow faster. so they are adding the 2 stop signs to elliot or on 45th? your coles notes doesnt make sense..there can't be 4 stop signs AND barrier (how else who 45th traffic get thru?) |
well if you guys want it gone earlier... a few bricks of claymore should do the trick. |

They are making it so when you are on elliot, you have to stop at the 45th intersection like you did before. It's just theres still a barrier preventing the left turns. There whole logic behind putting these things up is to make it extremely inconvenient for cars to navigate the area. They literally want NO traffic in the area, which is retarded since its also a transit route. The effectively made the situation worse by making traffic flow faster. Traffic flowing faster on elliot is bad for the school, no one obeys the schoolzone 30km/h because of that. So they realized they screwed up big time with the barrier, so they are putting back the 2 stop signs they took out. |
What the fuck. Seriously, what the fuck???? What's wrong with people going 60 in that area? Barriers + 4 way stops...... who the hell am I stopping for?? Bicyclists?!?!? And TOS'd, are you sure it was ever a 30 zone on Elliott? I don't recall seeing any signs... and I drive by there quite often hahah  |
^ Sry, I meant just the 1 block of school where its a schoolzone and the speed is reduced to 30km/h. |
I know someone who lives just off that intersection on 45th. She says whenever she pulls her car out of the garage now she has to be extra careful because people are just flooring it in the alley. |
glad i live in richmond for once and dont have to deal with this eco idiot. |

I used to take this route regularly as my mom lives in the area and I'm one of the few who actually likes the new barries. Way too many idiots run through those 4 way stops signs. Some idiot in a black CSX blew right through there once going west on 45th Ave., didn't even slow down one bit. EDIT: What about a traffic light? |
^ neither of those effectively reduce the speed in the area. im all for the way it was before, since i had to left turn like everyday, now i have to make a big detour. if the city wants to go with their plan of effectively stopping all outside traffic from going around that area, the only way i could see that happening is if they laid a shitload of speedbumps on elliot, LOL. |
i make this trip every day to work some of the people still stop as if there were a stop sign and most of the people just blow past it like nothing and then theres always people just crossing when they feel like it running to the middle =\ it was better before with just the 4way stop |
I think last week somebody else form city hall came by and talked to the residents of this area. Lots of people bitched about it. The rep from city hall said they are going to keep this barrier until nov and see how it goes. |
