Warning/Rant: Intersection 45th and Elliot/Clarendon

For anyone that lives around that area may have noticed 2 new signs at the 4-way stop. Anyways, they decided to make 45th a right turn only except for bicycles. That means you cannot, legally, drive through Elliot/Clarendon via 45th ave. Or turn left from 45th on to Elliot/Clarendon either direction.

The majority of drivers do not notice this sign at all, and still treat the intersection as a normal 4-way stop. But you can and will get ticketed for driving through or turning left, I've already seen at least 1 guy get pulled over for a left turn. So this is just a little heads up.

Thoughts on new signage? Also since this is relatively new, will they be monitoring how this affects traffic patterns there? I've noticed many people speeding at 60 km/h through the alleys so they can get to the other side of 45th, east bound. This is way worse than what it was before.

please refer my thread in Automotive forum, cyclist are taking over the GVRD

I'm guessing it's because of the elementary school there and people driving way too fast through that area. (I'm trying to picture where you're talking about and I'm assuming it's blocked going east/west and not in the north/south direction?)

They see it. They just ignore it because they are stubborn on change.

Not always the case. I've already seen a close accident, and the guy that crossed Elliot was unaware of the sign. For people that use that intersection daily they all know its a 4-way stop. And gives them no reason to look at the stop sign again.

Heavy traffic. In vancouver the fastest streets to go through are the side streets.

I gotta say that's a pretty retarded move but I don't think it'll affect me at all, right turns on 45th / straight through on Clarendon are my usual routes hah. The traffic on 45th East of Clarendon is pretty busy though, maybe that's why they changed it?

azncreationz 06-07-2010 02:43 PM

Sounds okay to me..but that's because I bike through there. As long as I don't get ran over by one of those blind drivers...

twitchyzero 06-07-2010 03:08 PM

live around the area
i see quite a few people blowing right thru the 4 way stop throughout the years...pretty dangerous as there's lots of cyclists/peds/schoolchildren here

optiblue 06-07-2010 04:47 PM

Meeh, if there's an alley or other side streets, I shall find it!

its not the fault of that intersection that drivers blow that stop sign... its the fault of the drivers themselves... they probably do it for all other stop signs

that change is just to change the flow of traffic...

why the hell for?!

I just noticed this new sign today heading westbound on 45th. I then proceeded to watch the next 10 cars either go straight or turn left, both of which are now illegal.
If you take that 45th/Elliot intersection on a normal basis, you'd know that the placement of this sign is absolutely retarded..

Does anyone know the exact date of this sign going up?

Yeah, I noticed it the other day. It's covered up by the tree and you can't see it until you're 10 ft away from it. It's also above the stop sign so I am not surprised that almost everyone that pulls up to the intersection misses it.

ceeteezy 06-13-2010 05:22 PM

wow I thru that 4 way on a daily instead of driving down kerr street. This sucks

Not sure the exact date, but I could find out for you. Apparently there was a notice given to residents around that area about the change.

give it a few weeks and the city is going to put those triangular islands in the way so they force drivers to go right.

Rogue951 06-13-2010 09:21 PM
