you will be suprised how many jobs DOSE NOT land you 6 figures..
IMHO, yes, in metro vancouver, 100K doesnt get you much, but how many families get by with alot less than 100K, and thats family income not personal...
if you think 100K is a middle class job... have i got news for you...
6 figures is a lot if you are not operating your own business

A friend of mine is an RN and she doesn't want the overtime. It isn't worth the extra money. It's like working for the taxman. Besides, government employees have great retirement packages. Work yourself to death and you won't be able to enjoy the rest of your life in retirement. When you're young, sure, but that job will wear you down. Both physically and mentally.

Half of the people I work with make that much. The problem is that the cost of living in Vancouver is so expensive that making 6 figures will get you a Vancouver special at most. To be affordable, a home is only suppose to cost 3-4x of your annual gross income. 100k X 4 = 400k, still not enough to buy a home, perhaps a townhouse on the eastside. Say you have a partner that makes 50K a year and NO KIDS, 150k x 4 = 600K. WoW a mediocre 20 year old house in Surrey! If that is not middle class, then I dont know what is.
So you see, it's all relative to the cost of living. You bring that kind of cash to Winnipeg or something and you're ballin.

I know this is off-topic, but with 600k cash, you really should break it up into say 4 pieces, and put a 150k down payment down payment on 4 different apartments (say 500-600k each) and lease them out individually. With that much down payment, rent should cover more than what you would pay for interest.
If you own 4 apartments in Vancouver, IMO you're pretty damn ballin.

you know..if you and ur wife..
have absolutely no expense...as in.. both of ur parents cover all ur shit
cars, food, cloth, movie nights..you name it...
your 150K will end up being like 80K when deductions are done..and no...
i think the middle class is all renting, or paying on like a 15-20 year mortgage, there is a reason why bank make money...cuz no one..can afford..even a downpayment with savings from like 3-4 years of full time work,
to be honest with you...I now see anyone who actually owns any kind of property in metro vancouver as pretty ballin....
just my 2cent..could be wrong too
i totally agree with you that 100K aint ballin... but its def above middle class yo! and like i mentioned b4, 100K is pretty hard to attain...as the acticle also backs this up by saying only 4% of the working labors are making >100K/yr... we all know there is like a good percentages of vancouver-ians...with a couple of tens of millions in the bank and not working haha...

6 figures is a lot if you are not operating your own business | Have you done the math? You will take home 70K a year, 5800/month. Car+house+food alone will run you about 4500. And I'm talking about a mediocre car like a TSX, living in a mediocre townouse on the eastside. So you have about 1300 left for entertainment, phone bills, clothes, household items, investments and what not. Now my question to you, is that your perception of the upper class? Because if not, then that is middle class.

a lot of people have expenses that are really unnecessary, don't know how to save money, and don't know how to prioritize what's important.

lets see u can rent out a decent home for 1500$ and car is about 900$ for a leased beamer. and that leaves you will 2100$ for food...u can eat out every night almost..
if that' ain't upper class i dont know what is.

My dad always laughed at people who didn't take OT and know those people wonder how my dad has so much money.
My friends mom make 266k one year as a nurse that's over 160k after taxes. This year she worked less overtime and make 159k that's 108k after taxes.

No disrespect to the people that are slaving away in order to make ends meet, but once you work for a few years, you'll realize that 100K isn't a whole lot to crow about.
I have some friends who are in the top tax bracket (>80K, based on their professions) and we are all under 30. Breaking 6 figures isn't easy, but it's certainly not impossible.
