Reporting a "near miss" Can anything be done against a driver? I was crossing the street and the light turned for pedestrians to cross (the walk signal) and the car that was approaching the intersection perpedicular to me (he has a red light) didn't stop and his mirror actually hit me as I stepped off the sidewalk. I'm fucking still shaking right now as I type this. |
Police non-emergency line and/or ICBC. |
"...his mirror actually hit me as I stepped off the sidewalk" - that's not a near miss, that's actually a hit-and-run. |
Not condoning what the other driver did in any way, but "look both ways before you cross" comes to mind. You, as a pedestrian, must also make sure that it is safe to cross the road before doing so. Having said that, you can report the person to ICBC and/or the police non-emergency line for your local police. You would need the date, time and location, and the licence plate of the vehicle to start. Depending on where it happened/detachment policy/responding officer, if you provide a statement and are willing to show up to court when its disputed, the officer can issue a violation ticket. |
Thanks I'll call in the morning. Would/could anything even be done to him though? I mean... even a letter from ICBC saying that he needs to smarten up would be good. I guess I initially called this a "near miss" since I wasn't actually physically hurt, but there was physical contact. I already stepped off the sidewalk and had I not looked over and paused because he didn't look like he was stopping, then I would've gone flying into the intersection. One more step forward would've been all it took. I don't know really what to think of this. He sort of turned around to look at me after the fact, but because I was too shaken up, all I did was look at his license plate and then continued crossing. I don't know whether he looked back at me thinking that *I* was the idiot for crossing (when i had the right of way) or if he saw that I was okay and just went on his way. THinking back, I wish I had knocked on his window and gave him a talking to. Strangely not even a bruise on me... but an anxiety kind of thing happening right now. Haven't been able to fall asleep yet. |
Did this happen in Richmond by any chance? I've been hit one time on my bike... didn't report it though... thinking back I should've. And another time some I was almost hit on the intersection of Westminster and Minoru while crossing. I'm assuming the idiot didn't see the red light and kept on driving... |
yup richmond...gilbert and elmbridge. |
kick his car next time |
walking is my main mode of transportation. i also drive but i prefer not to. i encounter similar situations like this frequently, except not as CLOSE as this incident. there are a lot of cars that don't stop when they have a red, when making a right turn, but when they do this it's like "cutting me off" where they will stop after the white lines, not before it. sometimes i end up hitting the car with my hand... like knocking/punching it to get their attention. THIS time though, i was in shock. i didn't rage at him. i was just freaked out. i stood there for a few moments staring at him when he turned around, and didn't know what to do. a few secs later i just kept walking but after i got his license plate. i called the non emergency police. they said to call icbc. i called icbc and they said there's nothing they can do. it would be the police to issue tickets. so i have no way of letting this guy know he's a freaking idiot and needs to go back to driving school. i wish he actually caused me physical injury. then i could file a claim. apparently that's the key part that is missing in this incident. lesson learned: you can be an asshole driver and unless there's an officer nearby to catch you in the act, there's nothing that can be done. no wonder people fake injuries. |
dam your lucky that it was only the mirror and nothing more ive had my legs run over by suv and let me tell you it fuckin hurts |

Thanks to all for your replies. PM me if you want his plate number. lol |
Glad you came out with less than a bruised hand. I got clipped on a bike once by a driver who didn't want to wait for a space in oncoming traffic to go around the outside. Fortunately I was able to dump the bike safely. Received the same story as you where no one could do anything about it despite providing detailed information about the plate, the car and a relatively detailed description of who was driving. Yet, officers still hand out like candy tickets for lack of a front plate, not displaying L/N signs and plenty of unsubstantiated VI's. Because those are the true dangers on our streets :bullshit: |
did you report him? He most likely would be charged with at least driving with undo care and attention. Drivers need to remember even when turning right you need to shoulder check (theres bikes and people using the road and they are on your right) and pedestrians need to look both ways. "Right of way" means nothing once your dead or crippled. |
^that so true pedestrians and bikes always think that right of way means every1 will stop for me cuz im walking/riding how bout you think about weight ratio first and who would be hurt more if you were to collide |
Phil...yah i tried to report but the police and icbc said nothing can be done since i wasn't injured. yah there are some pretty retarded pedestrians out there too. like those who walk when there's a blinky green light for the left turn cars. the problem all comes down to following the rules of the road. drivers need to follow them, and so do pedestrians. |
So the police are willing to wait until he kills someone or seriously injures them? Retarded. Posted via RS Mobile |
he didnt see u and u didnt see him. dont assume hes going to stop for you. your a more vulnerable as a pedestrian, you should always be alert of your surroundings. why are you shaking? grow some balls man. btw your username is pretty gay. |
sorry to burst your bubble but i prefer boobs over balls. i did see him. had i not seen him i would've been able to file a claim against this asshole. |
