like any other tax...HST simply transfer money from one side to the other...
but in this case the government is not the biggest gainer, your typical retail businesses are (most of their expenses are going to be reduced by 7% after HST)

orange7 06-30-2010 07:05 AM

from my experience,

Chinese store owners always gain no matter what situation it is.

I was just going through the list of some of the HST exempt & HST taxable food items.

Cow's milk is considered basic nutrition food and is HST exempt, but Soy milk is considered a luxury item and is now taxed...

What the fuck? Does the government have its head so far up it's ass that it doesn't know there are a lot of lactose intolerant people out there who drink Soy milk because they can't drink regular milk?

That's just one stupid example, it seems so fucking arbitrary what they decide to be "basic nutrition" and "luxury".

Tell me about it. I'm allergic to wheat and most of my alternative products are now considered "Luxury items". Fantastic.

BEEB 06-30-2010 08:19 AM

you people probably didn't think deep enough about the HST.

Why the government bring in HST? Here's a few POV of mine

- Rich and wealthy Canadian's doesn't wanna pay more income tax. But the government DO need money to run the country. So, do you think that they should raise the income tax from all income brackets? say from 43% to 53% and charge more luxury tax on Mercedes and BMWs? Hell no, said the rich

- In order for the politicians and wealthy canadians to continue their luxury life style, or more importantly, keep their $$ in their own pockets. HST is the answer. Everyone pay more in order to subsidize the need of tax money. More tax $$ from everyone means more funding for everyone.

- So, who's in favor of the HST ? All the rich and wealthy canadians + people who's paying 47% income tax brackets + canadian who understood this theory !

- unfortunately, I'm in favor of the HST !

Don't steal, the government hates competition.

Someone has to pay for those nurses to be able to pull in 240K a year with overtime

Mugen EvOlutioN 06-30-2010 08:33 AM

Dunno if people will get pissed off about this, but in addition to the HST, gas prices are going up a full cent because of the carbon tax.

Probably doesn't sound like much, but it's still driving gas prices up for people who need their cars to get to work.

You're late to the party. Search a bit next time.

This one's good:

Fruit drinks, if they contain less than 25 per cent of natural fruit juice are taxable, and the tax man has taken a close look at that frozen concentrate.

"To determine the tax status of frozen fruit juice beverage concentrates, the CRA will consider the percentage of fruit justice by volume in the frozen concentrate," said the memorandum.
What a fucking administrative nightmare.

Fixed.

This is not the Nurses' fault. They are an important part of our weak health care system, they deserve every penny they get. If the government doesn't want to pay out overtime, they could always hire more.

Tapioca 06-30-2010 09:22 AM

I won't name names, but when I see people who cry murder about the HST and then go on other threads on RS and rave about the latest exotic restaurant they've eaten at, I can't help but laugh.

If you're in the service industry, I understand your anger. But as was the case with the GST, you'll be okay in the long-run.

I obviously won't be happy when I pay a dime more for my java fix in the mornings, but I'll eventually accept it. Yes, that's very "Canadian" of me to accept things, but you know what? If I didn't like it here, I would have moved a long time ago to some lower tax jurisdiction.

it's to pay the olympic debt, as well as the ever more demanding unions - who ask for raises during the midst of a global recession

cow20xx 06-30-2010 11:10 AM

HST doesn't affect gas price in BC, but the carbon tax will.

Jackygor 06-30-2010 11:31 AM

HST will benefit most for small business owners, no?
