Tuning 91 vs 94 gas

Im currently tuned to 91 gas, should i get it retuned to 94?

does it make a difference for n/a cars?

i couldnt tune to 94 that day cause i had a full tank of 91

thoughts?

Berzerker 07-06-2010 08:47 AM

What car? Need more info. Compression?

Berz out.

Mugen EvOlutioN 07-06-2010 09:12 AM

05 rsx s

I/H/E tuned

Berzerker 07-06-2010 09:16 AM

They gains you might receive will be minimal compared to the amount you'll be spending on gas. Basically all your going to do is add timing until it detonates and then pull it back a tad. Are you running Kpro? Unless you've changed compression you really don't need 94 stick with 91 and enjoy the savings in fuel :D

Mugen EvOlutioN 07-06-2010 09:19 AM

ya im kproed
No didnt change compression

the only thing thats holding me back is i really dont wonna go race header for the next power mod. loud as hell...and i refuse to be loud haha..

i had shorty with test pipe + catback and it was nuts.

Now im just running shorty with catback now.

So i guess not really worth it to get it re-dyno tuned to 94 gas?
if i can gain 10whp than i'd say its worth it lol

Berzerker 07-06-2010 09:24 AM

Well you could do it and see what it gets you. Dyno is the way to go so you can see if it actually does anything. I would say 10whp would be worth it but I can't see that much from stock compression 94 over 91 with just with a tune.

Race header on the other hand is where the power is on those cars ;)

Mugen EvOlutioN 07-06-2010 09:26 AM

haha i know i know, i read about it already

guess i will stay with 91 than

i made 205whp and 152 torque on dyno dynamics

joquio 07-06-2010 12:18 PM

Just get the Raceheader. You won't regret it.
It was night and day for me when I switched to a raceheader and a tuned map.

Mugen EvOlutioN 07-06-2010 12:49 PM

wat u driving?

FA5....is??? new civic Si?

cant remember the chassis code lol

RH is loud as fuck tho! ahahaha

with test pipe i cant even hear myself think nor the music. I felt my sub was pounding next to nothing lol

joquio 07-06-2010 12:54 PM

Yes the new SI Sedan. LOL
remember.......? you got the Pedobear stickers from me...........

Anyways, my RH setup isn't really THAT loud really....
Just pair it with a good cat-back that isn't N1 style.....

I used to have have the Honda Fit before my SI and I installed a testpipe ...drove for a block and then quickly took the testpipe off because I was just too embarrassed from the sound/noise.

Mugen EvOlutioN 07-06-2010 02:38 PM

haha ohhhhhhhhh my bad, i forgot ur username

got a terrible memory

i really do

I dont know, i really dislike test pipe. It made my J's racing 60mm really really raspy, sounded like tin can. i was like whoa wtf, removed it after couple months.

Damn now i wonna hear ur setup haha

Stick with 91 if you don't run a turbo.... it's not worth it to pay for 94 for a NA engine.

Not to mention, 91 octane is more accessible than 94. I don't believe (in my experience anyway) any gas stations in the US carry 94 unless you run into the odd station here or there, but even that's a rarity.

Not entirely true. It depends on compression ratios, pistons, cams, etc., etc. For the most part, you'll be fine on 91/92, but more extreme and specific NA builds require 94.

Mugen EvOlutioN 07-07-2010 07:41 AM

So boosted cars gets my HP out of 94 tune instead 91 tune?

N/A cars wouldnt really benefit from it would it?

if thats the case i will stick with 91/92 tune

im use to filling up at petro, now thx to the new system...they no longer have 94

and call me crazy but i havent seen 94 down in washinton...yet?

tofu1413 07-08-2010 07:11 AM

i was wondering about this question for myself...

so i guess i need a tune for 94?

83mm bore, 11.5:1 CP forged pistons, stock ITR cams (this is on my 2000 ITR ) im running just a apexi VAFC right now..

Mugen EvOlutioN 07-08-2010 07:55 AM

why do u need 94 tune?

because ur compression is higher than stock?

Captain Bondo 07-08-2010 02:40 PM

What it actually depends on is whether or not you are knock limited currently with 91. Many small-bore normally aspirated engines with pent-roof combustion chambers are not knock limited on 91.

In other words, ignition can be advanced to the point that makes best torque, and further advance results in power actually dropping off. If you can hit that point currently then you will not gain anything.

If you or your tuner tuned the ignition timing on a steady state dyno observing how much hp/degree you were picking up when advancing the timing, and you know if it was tapering off or not as you reached the detonation threshold (assuming that you did hit knock before power started dropping) then you should have a decent idea how much power is left on the table due to octane.

If you haven't done that, then anything is just a guess IMHO.

Running bigger bore and 1.0 higher comp than stock

I'm running a dcrh with a greddy evo 2 and it isnt that loud. It really depends on what exhaust you got..

DiiCii 10-15-2010 10:09 PM

probably not a good idea for me to retune to a lower grade even though i want to, in order to save as much money as i can. i'm running 94 right now on stock rb20det. you guys think it's ok to run a lower grade? LOL

Lomac 10-15-2010 11:48 PM

Stock, as in completely bone stock? Nothing done to it? Provided it's of North American descent, it doesn't require 94 octane and you'll be fine with a lesser grade.

dkvby 10-16-2010 12:49 AM

is it only 3cents more for 94 than 91? so a tank of 50litres will be 1.50 more ..... i say go for 94

Mugen EvOlutioN 10-16-2010 02:05 AM

except 94 is harder and harder to find now
