I have a questions about the private sale of used vehicles

before its just the PST 7% , but now .. it says HST not required, but then still 12% because they want to be comparable with dealerships.... then what is the point of a private sale.

That is saying, if we sell something used (anything) , in the stores, they charge tax,.. so we should too. ?? .. can anybody clarify that

There was no GST charged previously on private used vehicle sales.
There was 7% PST charged previously on private used vehicle sales.

The reason you're confused is cause of how they word the HST. The HST is a federal tax, like the GST. Thus essentially the HST is the GST with the PST rolled into it. For items where no GST was applied, there's no GST to roll the PST into to create the HST. Thus instead they say the PST was raised to 12% for these items to stay consistent taxing everything 12%.

Lost? Ya, its stupid, just word games.

This means there is no incentive to buy privately anymore, no tax to be saved. I think this will hurt the private sale business, as people generally feel better buying from a business cause they can go back to the business for service, complaints, ...

Technically you're supposed to be charging tax on any private sale items, not just cars, yet most of us don't and the tax man doesn't care as long as we're only selling a few things at a time. CRA has cracked down on eBay sellers, since they were avoiding paying tax and essentially running a business.

On topic. Man I am about to go out for lunch at crystal mall but with this HST thing I am not so sure anymore lol. Seems like all the small place is ripping customer off by having a price increase.

Nanchu in richmond, they changed their menu after HST.

Everything on the menu includes HST already, no tax on liquor, but i forgot what their regular prices were, so dunno if they jacked it up, most likely they did.

GST has nothing to do with whether the business is making a net profit or net loss...

100% of the GST/HST they paid are refunded
100% of the GST/HST they collected on behalf of the government are remitted
if a business collected more GST than they've paid, they pay the excess back to the government. If they paid more GST than they collected, they get a refund on the difference..

The point is...all GST money whether owned or owed, does not belong to the business.

You're living in a dream land man... you think all the asian places that charge cash only for everything report their income and remit the tax to the government???? Asian cash-only businesses are laughing their asses off with this tax, they're getting another free 7% profit margin they didn't have before!! LOL

Sorry for keeping this OT, but this thread was derailed long ago.
Oh, I'm sorry if I hurt your feelings.

I meant to say people automatically tip 15% right off the bat.
Mediocre to piss poor service. Because anything less than 15% would seem cheap,
I don't want to look like a cheap ass.
Then it can go 20-25% if it's a good service. Hot girl, automatic 30% tip.

Why is everyone complaining about this HST? I don't hear anyone crying about inflation and HST isn't that bad. So you have to pay a couple dollars more. If ur so concerned about your finances then budget better and stop going out so much.

There is a variety of reasons:

1. People believe that the Liberal government promised that they would not pursue the HST prior to the last election (Campbell never promised anything on this point, btw.) The HST was introduced soon after the last election, so people now feel that they have been betrayed.

2. People who own small service-industry businesses (restaurants, salons, gyms, etc.) who never had to charge PST feel that their businesses will lose customers because of the tax. I have eaten out since July 1 and I haven't noticed a real decrease in customer traffic at my regular establishments.

3. People who are living beyond their means by going out excessively are going to feel the pinch a bit more. But instead of applying for a promotion or looking at other ways of making more money to support their lifestyle, they instead blame the politicians.

$1.50 pizza is now $1.75 at FM Classic and 2001 Flavours.

Pre-HST: $1.50 = $1.43 + 5% GST
Now: $1.75 = $1.56 + 12% HST

So the actual price went up 13¢ besides the 7% tax hike.

Wow. That place used to charge $0.95 per pizza slice. Just pay $1 flat.
Then $1.25, $1.50, $1.75. I guess there are no more $1 pizza places and prices will NEVER drop here in BC.

these are places I've noticed are costing more:
Starbucks: venti flavoured frappe Reg: $4.95 HST: $5.10
Panago: 2 medium pizzas Reg: about $34 HST: about $38

Sure the prices aren't much..but after a while could've saved a couple bucks
