Racism exists everywhere in the world. You just gotta learn to roll with the punches and live your life.

Wow, so true. So true.

Another thing. I'm not Chinese, but grew up in Chinatown. Back when I was in elementary school, my Chinese buddies hated the "New Canadians" as they were called (FOB term was used often even back then). They were so different from the rest of the "established Chinese Canadians". I've heard many of them say all the hard work and reputation Chinese Canadians have built over generations are now being tainted by the newcomers. I'm not trying to cause trouble, but is this shit true? Is there a bit of hate between the two? Over the years, I've lost touch with all my Chinese friends. I hang out with whities now, LOL.

I'm surprised none of the graffiti doesn't have, "I'd rather be white than wong."

All you have to do is go to Richmond. Kids with no education working at Aberdeen Mall driving an Audi R8 from mom.

^ The problem imo is even with the new generation, you have 2 types.. the working-class type, and the "daddy sent me to a foreign land called Canada, I don't even know why I'm here so I leave for my homeland 2h after my last final and return the morning classes start" type. The former are much lower profile, but exist. The latter.. you see them at E-spot and wherever FOBs go to pose.

The problem with having too big of an immigrant community is that after a certain threshold they don't even try assimilating anymore. Quebec, anyone? I remember taking extra grammar (not just ESL) classes so I could keep up with my white classmates. Now you see people get out of university/college who can't even string a coherent English sentence together. It's totally lame. Of course I'm sure it's not just the Chinese who are guilty of this.

If you think white people racism against the Chinese is bad.. this is nothing compared to the 80s, before all the FOBs showed up around 1991-1994. Oh good times. :lol And speaking from personal experience, Vancouver is nothing compared to say.. Red Deer, AB or Barrie, ON. ;)

So many FOBs I know hate/avoid white guys but can't even name a reason why. On the flip side, most white guys I know don't mind chilling with Chinese or Brown people as long as they don't act like poseurs. On a side not, you ever notice how white guys will hang with whoever, but HK FOBs won't even hang with mainlanders, even though both are Chinese? :p

Some interesting stuff there. Thanks.

Others' opinions/thoughts?

I think we're fortunate to be in Van, compared to the east (Mtl,T.O) I think most people here are pretty accepting of different cultures. When I was a kid listening to much "got rice" I felt a connection with the other asian people living in Van but when I moved to Toronto when i was 14 for a year, it was totally different. People there are all strangers to eachother it seems like (depending on which area). Because it's so big and so diverse, it's like there's not enough time to learn to accept everybody. But here, it's so small, and just different. And even the junkies will feel comfortable striking up a conversation on the train, this place is pretty friendly compared to others.

Hmmmmm. I like striking up conversations with people. I talk to people in line ups all the time and most people are receptive to it. A few times, women cover up and look at me like I'm some kind of perv, but other than that, it's all cool.

Its just a bunch of kids thinking they are tough, but what do you expect? If I went to Japan, setup a business, put up a bunch of English signs and refused to learn the language native of Japan, I wouldn't be surprised of some JDM kiddies would vandalize my stuff. (this is just an example, tis all I'm saying)

People born in Canada(mainly white males) hate seeing a different ethnic groups storm in and change the area, only hiring people of the same ethnicity. I bet money even if I was qualified, I could not get a job anywhere in that area because I'm a white male(?). I'm sure every country in the world hates to see this. I know for a fact in Guatemala, the locals hate the Americans that buy up land around Mayan Ruins and don't support the local economy at all.

So sure, the Vandals are racist punks, probably good for nothing people, but what about the business owners? I am just curious of how much of a double standard there is. Racism, Its a two way street, and a lot of those signs should be in English and French and equal opportunity should be there. But we all know it isn't.

Vandals are usually punk kids, they probably won't grow up to be major skinhead anarchists, but maybe that community could help by trying to be a part of Canada instead of making it look like a new Hong Kong. aka, more Canadian flags, etc.

Note, I'm always right on the internet, and I probably have more Chinese friends then you do :p so there!

cheers!

Yeah the reason is because Toronto consists of many cultures all trying to take over territory, and any new immigrant naturally goes to his/her territory to try to make a living.

What also makes Toronto worst is the fact there is too many people and not enough jobs.

Look at the US. In Arizona they are deporting Mexicans because the white people want to work at McDonalds again. lol.

IMO, there seems to be a divide between 1st and 2nd generation Chinese.

1st still has the "school or gtfo" mentality from parents that immigrated here to Canada for a better life.

The 2nd generation, where their parents were grown up here, has become pretty much white-washed.

A lot of the Chinese stereotypes (cheap spender and good at math) originate from 1st generation.

And... I have nothing to say about the FOBs that come from Hong Kong. It's like they're a totally different beast.

Walperstyle 08-12-2010 01:35 PM

Define white-washed

They're more relaxed in school, have nicer clothing, some no longer speak their native language (this is not rare amongst 2nd gens). They mostly speak English to their parents and aren't as stringent with money. They're more chill since they aren't as stressed about marks. I am being VERY GENERAL here.

this concerns me more than some graffiti

Quote:

Richmond RCMP have confirmed there was a fight at the school Friday night and that a knife was involved.

Police say both participants were males, but their ages have not been confirmed. Each was taken to hospital with stab wounds.
from the article you linked that's far more concerning than some kids tagging a school as for the video in the article it won't play

baggdis300 03-05-2011 10:54 PM

racism happens, its mostly the uneducated ignorant broke fuck's that are racist..

but it happens, i've learned to ignore it cause most of the time i am in a better position(in general) than the person being ignorant

i just try to be as open minded a i can be living in the lower mainland, basically respect me, ill respect you.

in the case they decide to be ignorant, they are not worth me losing my cool and getting in trouble.

StylinRed 03-05-2011 11:07 PM

ignorate??? :crazy2: ???

i don't even see why this is newsworthy... there's racist graffiti everywhere, the bigger story is that knife fight... what kind of place do we live in where 2 kids in a knife fight isn't a bigger story than some dumbasses tagging a school

here's a pic of the graffiti

At least they have the Swastikas pointing the right way this time. I seem to recall last time they had the Swastikas pointing the opposite direction which in Japan is a symbol for a Shinto temple/religion.

lol a knife was pulled during a fight? (referring to that video).
