Universal Garage Remote

Does anyone know where to get a Universal garage remote? Basically I have 2 houses with diffrent brand garage remotes. Instead of having 2 remotes is there a universal garage remote that takes all brands of garage openers?

YK86 08-16-2010 03:34 PM

I bought one from Canadian Tire. It goes on my keychain as I've had clickers stolen from my car before (about the size of a cell battery, not tiny but better than putting a normal one in my pocket). I think they also sell the standard ones that go on the visor in the car as well.

This is the one I bought (in black)

I just got one at walmart. make sure the remote will work with both brands.

I paid 40 for mine.

i know rona has them too also sure home depot has them since they both carry garage door stuff

Speaking of garage doors, has anyone had problems lately with their garage door remotes? I've started to have problems with mine (last two or three weeks). I use the Homelink button that is built into the overhead console of my Honda to open the garage doors. The actual remote doesn't work either. However, in the morning they both work. When I get home later in the afternoon, they stop working. I turn the power off to the garage door openers at night for extra security. Can it be this heat? Batteries on the remote have been checked.

How's that for hijacking a thread. It's just not worth starting a new thread for........... RS to the rescue?

Oh, the garage door opener is a POS Chamberlain Liftmaster that came with the house.

MG1 08-16-2010 10:53 PM

WTF? Double post..........

OTG-ZR2 08-17-2010 12:37 AM

Lift masters are loud as fuck and clunky

Loud they are, but I had no choice. I guess it's time to replace both. I can't sneak out of the house in the middle of the night when the fricken garage door opener wakes up all the neighbors in a two block radius.

^ LOL time to get the garage doors with belts instead of chains they are pretty quiet

TypeRNammer 08-19-2010 03:41 PM

Thanks to this thread, I picked up a chamberlain clicker remote, no more doing indiana jones when I'm closing the garage door LOL

I have one... just as a sidenote/warning, you CANNOT PROGRAM YOUR HOMELINK SYSTEMS WITH THESE

Homelink with which one?

I bought an overhead console off of an Odyssey (auto wrecker) and the homelink part was easy to programme. I programmed the Homelink to control both garage doors. My other vehicle that came with a homelink built into the overhead console worked, as well.

Edit: I think I know what you are saying. The new remote control will not sync the garage door opener with the Homelink. Am I right? The step by step instructions for programming the homelink requires the remote of the garage door opener to be set first.

Gumby 08-20-2010 03:02 PM

I think the point Captain Picard is trying to make is that these universal remotes work by "memorizing" the code that your garage door opener transmits.

The problem is that many recent garage door openers have an extra security feature that changes the code every time it is opened with the remote. Thus, your universal remote/homelink system won't work because it's not OEM.

Homelink can sync with rolling code systems. My Chamberlain garage door opener has rolling code feature. My previous house had a Stanley opener and a Craftsman. Both had rolling codes and the Homelink on my car worked on those, as well.

Strzelec 08-20-2010 05:34 PM

Yep same here. 3 Cars with homelink all work with the rolling code

CP.AR 08-22-2010 02:36 AM

no... You can't program a homelink using a skylink remote control... At least that's what their rep told me when i e-mailed them. (non rolling code chamberlain)

Oooh that's news to me then. I should try programming my garage door opener with my Homelink system again...

off-topic but related... does anybody have a NON ROLLING Chamberlain remote control they can lend me to program my homelink? (again, skyline universal remote cannot be used to program homelink on me TL)

Which is what I was trying to say all along in various ways.

In order for a Homelink to work with a rolling code or any garage door opener, for that matter, you need the hand held remote that came with your garage door opener.

Here's a step by step for programming the Homelink from a car. I know it works on all Honda/Acura cars. Not sure about any other manufacturer. I got this from the Internet years ago. Don't know who to credit. Anyway.....

Quote:

Before you begin - If you just took delivery of your vehicle and have not trained any of the buttons in the HomeLink transmitter before, you should erase any previously learned codes before training the first button. To do this, press and hold the two outside buttons on the HomeLink transmitter until the red light flashes. Release the buttons, then proceed to Step 1. If you are training the second or third buttons, go directly to Step 1.

1. Unplug the garage door opener motor from the house current.

2. Hold the end of the garage door opener remote control 1 to 3 inches from the HomeLink transmitter. Make sure you are not blocking your view of the red light in the transmitter.

3. Select the transmitter button you want to train.

4. Press the button on the remote control and the button on the transmitter at the same time. Hold down both buttons. Canadian Owners: The remote control you are training from may stop transmitting after two seconds. This is not long enough for the HomeLink transmitter to learn the code. Release and press the button on the remote control every two seconds until the transmitter has learned the code.

5. The red light in the transmitter should begin flashing. It will flash slowly at first, then rapidly.

6. When the red light flashes rapidly, release both buttons. The transmitter should have learned the code from the remote control.

7. Plug in the garage door opener motor, then test the transmitter button by pushing it. It should operate the garage door. If the button does not work, repeat this procedure to train it again. If it still does not work, you may have a variable orrolling code garage door opener. Test this by pressing and holding the HomeLink transmitter button you just trained. If the red light blinks for two seconds, then stays on, you have a rolling code garage door opener. You may be able to verify this with the manufacturer's documentation. Go to "Training With a Rolling Code System."

8. Repeat these steps to train the other two transmitter buttons to operate any other remotelycontrolled devices around your home (lighting, automatic gate, security system, etc.).

Training With a Rolling Code System For security purposes, newer garage door opening systems use a "rolling" or variable code. Information from the remote control and the garage door opener are needed before the HomeLink transmitter can operate the garage door opener. The "Training the Transmitter" procedure trains the HomeLink transmitter to the proper garage door opener code. The following procedure synchronizes the HomeLink transmitter to the garage door opener so they send and receive the correct codes. It may be helpful to have someone assist you with this procedure.

1. Make sure you have properly completed the "Training the Transmitter" procedure.

2. Find the "Training" button on your garage door opener unit. The location will vary, depending on the manufacturer. The manufacturer's documentation may help.

3. Press the Training button on the garage door opener unit until the light next to the button comes on, then release it. The light may blink, or come on and stay on. You then have approximately 30 seconds to complete the following steps.

4. Press and release the button on the HomeLink transmitter. (The same button you trained with the "Training the Transmitter" procedure.)

5. Press and release the HomeLink transmitter button again. This should turn off the training light on the garage door opener unit. (Some systems may require you to press and release the button up to three times.)

6. Press the transmitter button again. It should operate the garage door.

Retraining a Button

To train an already programmed transmitter button to operate a new device:

1. Select the transmitter button you want to train.

2. Press and hold the transmitter button until the red light begins to flash slowly (approximately 20 seconds).

3. While continuing to hold the transmitter button, place the remote control for the device 1 to 3 inches from the HomeLink transmitter.

4. Press and hold the button on the remote control. Hold both buttons until the red light begins to flash rapidly.

5. Release both buttons. The transmitter should now be trained to operate the device.

Erasing Codes
To erase the codes stored in all three buttons, press and hold the two outside buttons until the red light begins to flash, then release the buttons. You should erase all three codes before selling the vehicle.

I have a rolling code one, but that won't help you. Now, I would never do this, but you can always go buy a non-rolling one, use it to program the Homelink and return it.

Oh, the garage door opener is a POS Chamberlain Liftmaster that came with the house.

I have different range for both my penthouse, and my parent's place. The reason I can think of for my parent's place is that the transmission is just simply not as good during the night when we all have our TV's on, or some fag on the plateau is trasmitting powerfully close to that frequency.

I heard of people in E.Van who have those bus lines go near their house that's EMI as well.

For my penthouse, it actually works better at night, then again, so do most transmitting devices no? Something about the Sun and the light making for a SLIGHT bit of difference with transmission of signals.

i dunno, it's monday to me, im all cracked out coz it's early *yawn*

on an extension I would like to ask about those homelink systems that come standard on some cars.....

Recently I broke the garage door opener and replaced it with a Craftsman unit. On the box it says it'd be "compatible with all home-link systems" but when I program my car's home-link to it the rolling code makes it impossible to open it the 2nd time around....

Maybe there are some ways to work around it?

Did you follow the steps outlined in 89blkcivic's post above? For openers that have the rolling code, it makes sense that there's an extra step.

1) First the Homelink system learns the remote's signal.
2) Then the garage opener learns the Homelink signal.
