id prefer the show to be grittier/darker than it is but whatever its entertaining

aside from the nuttiness of keeping heads of course he's basically a more developed Rick, further along the path of leadership and dealing with tragedy

That's why I struggle with the character, really. He kills innocent people but is fiercely protective of the people of Woodbury? He seems to care deeply about those around him. I mean, look at the way he spoke to the old man. All the residents clearly respect him rather than fear him. Hell, look at the "soldiers" at Woodbury. Most of them don't seem like psychos but they'll do whatever the Governor asks. Merle won't even bust the Governor (yet...) in front of the crowds, who clearly don't know the Governor is a psychotic killer.

It's quite clear what sort of person he is in the comic almost right away. There is no redeeming quality to the Governor there. He's despicable from the beginning. It'll be interesting to see how they develop him in the show but as it stands...all the shit that's going to go down could've been solved with...

i cant recall exactly, but i think his reasoning to take out the prison, wasn't because he feared the citizens would realize they could survive out there alone but it was because he found it a threat to have another group so close to theirs and that's why when Merle asked if they were going to use the prison he said "no" because the citizens wanted to live in a familiar setting
