I have the Sony X Walkman, which comes with on-board Digital Noise Cancelling, which works like a charm. The downside is that you have to carry the original headphones with you for them to work, as the microphone to pick up the noise is on the phones themselves. I usually just bring them on trips to use on the plane/bus/train. I use my player almost on a daily basis, so I end up wearing out headphones pretty quickly - so I didn't want to wear out my noise cancelling headphones.
I like mine because, they draw off the power of my player. I can use them when i'm listening to music on my player, OR use the jack it comes with that allows you to use an external device. On my flight back to Vancouver, I was watching films on my Netbook, then watching flights on the in-flight tv, then switch to my regular MP3 player... THEN, I turn the volume way down just to sleep.
That said, Noise Cancelling headphones probably don't provide the BEST sound possible. You get a slight bit of hiss in the background when it is on, which still gives you a bit of a headache after listening to it for a long time.
That said - the Shure Headphones I picked up (SE210) have amazing noise isolation. The only issue with this is it depends on what sort of music you listen to, and how you like your music. The SE210's don't have crazy bass. They have some better bass than some of the hardcore In-Ear Monitor's, but if you listen to heavy beats, or are used to the overpowering bass in headphones like the Sennheisser CX-300's, then you might feel like you're dropping down a level.
It also depends on what quality music you listen to. I found after getting my Shure's, I'd listen to a song on my player and realize that it's lower quality (I can hear if it's below 260kbps), and it forces me to redownload the music at a better quality. And if I switch to a player like an iPod, I found the quality goes down again... Some people listen to the radio and they're happy with the quality. If that's the case, I'd just stay away from the more expensive headphones...

Bought mine 3 years ago, and I don't regret having spent that much on it.
How does the custom fit process go? I wont mind paying for a set of good earphones, I'm just afraid that the "custom fit" ends up not really fitting perfectly thus resulting in compromised sound.

I just picked up the Bose QC15 and i love them. My dad has the QC2 and you can notice a big improvement in the noise cancellation on the QC15. They are SUPER comfortable too. You can wear these for hours and you won't even notice you have them on. Sound quality is top botch as expected with Bose. Not crazy on the bass where it will drown out everything. I hear Dre's are too bass heavy, where the Bose is very well balanced out. I think it would be a good investment for you since you travel alot. Its basically what they were designed for. When you walk into a Bose store and test them out, they emulate the environment of being inside a plane where all you hear is the engine rumbling, and once you turn on the headphones you hear how well it cuts out the noise. I got a great deal on them at the Woodburn Outlet in Oregon (tax free woohoo!). So yea... because you travel... i highly recommend the Bose
Heard that they were quite good. Definitely a much better value proposition than the UE11's, I got them before the Livewires got much better known, haha.

You go to the audiologist, and then they make a set of molds from your ears by squirting some goop into your ears. Then you send them to UE for them to use in making your IEM shells. If the shells don't fit well when they get to you, you send them back and they will adjust them for high or low spots (or recast the shell completely). You can keep doing this until you are satisfied, though Canadian shipping is a total PITA.
If you're not happy you can return the set for a refund, of course.

Go bose quiet comfort fooooorrrr suuuurre... I work in audio and have listened to all types of noise cancelling. Nothing is more comfortable and noise cancels with crisp bass more than the bose quiet comforts. Its well worth the money Posted via RS Mobile
I guess a fitting simile would be to say that it’s like sticking your hand into a bucket of water: if you’re wearing gloves, you don’t get wet, but you still have your hand in water and you know the gloves are the reason you’re dry. The feeling of sticking your hand into a bucket without water is completely different, even though the result is the same; you’re dry. That’s pretty much how I can describe the difference between blocking noise, and removing noise, but it really is something you have to try to fully understand the difference.
considering the Sennheiser PXC 350 is in the same price range as the Bose QC15 if not, more. I would still go for the Bose. I think everyone in the thread is refering to the Bose QC3 and not QC15. QC15 goes over the entire ear not just over the ear like the QC3. And the Bose definately look nicer cuz they're not half the size of your head like the PCX's.
Been trying out the Dre Beats well I wait for my new Grado's to get here, anyway, they're garbage imo. Sure, the noise cancelling is nice for when your in public and all but sound quality is absolute crap. The guy at Futureshop told me he's gone through 3 pairs in 5 months, great selling point! haha
I would never get dre's at full price they are poor quality n just offer lots of bass; which is easily achievable without much effort. Bose are good if you can get them at a discount.
For noise isolating I'm currently usin meelec m9's. I got iit cheap through a RFD link and they offer great sound range and bass for the price. I would love to get myself a pair of Custom IEMs by UE; those would probably be the best at noise isolation. Posted via RS Mobile
Where do you guys buy your iems or Cans? I am looking at westone and akg k702 but dont see a lot retailer carrying it. Long and mcquade has akg k702 but they dont have a sample here, only unit they hAve is in toronto. Do hook me up with canadian sites that you guys use. thanks Posted via RS Mobile

It's also possible to get custom tips for your current IEMs if you want a cheaper solution to isolation.

Consumer Electronics downtown has a decent selection of certain brands (I don't think they have AKG, but they have Senn, Beyer, Grado, Ultrasone, and more). HiFi Centre, also downtown, carries the high-end stuff too, but I haven't been there yet. I've also heard that they have large markups.
Which shures are you comparing them to? I tried a pair of 115s and honestly, they were no better than the stock apple buds. I'm sure the 535s would destroy the beats but then again, they cost $500++ so, apples and oranges. One thing thou, did you buy them from eBay? From my research, it seems like there are tons of knock-offs that look pretty real. Posted via RS Mobile
The 115's, but yeah i did my research and decided not to get one off craigs but rather off a friend that can use his employee discount at FS. I guess overall it's a good pair of earphones depending on what i listen to. Withi rnb its amazing but for some trance tracks, it's lacking bass but i the clear highs makes up for it.
