| Fun 50cc Scooter
I rode on a Honda Jazz today for the first time and it was very fun!
Anyone have experience with scooters? A used Honda Jazz is pretty affortable ($1500-2000) but what to look for? Pros and cons? What about importing one from the US? I think it's a good time to look around as the season winds down... Posted via RS Mobile |

| Click here for a discussion on the Honda Jazz but as to what to look for? There isn't much in all honesty. If it runs, it's good for the most part but watch our for stuff like tread life, brake pads, oil and radiator fluid changes, electronics working (lights/starter) and throttle response. You should not be paying more than $2000 regardless of season. I wouldn't worry about rust because the frame is a skeleton frame and most of the body parts are plastic. Don't let high mileage deter you as long as it comes with a well documented paper trail of maintenance and/or receipts. There is a good chance the Jazz you rode today was a 4-stroke model.
If you're open to other scooters, don't forget to consider the Yamaha BWS and Honda Ruckus. Acuracura had a BWS for quite a while.
To date, I've owned the following scooters:
2006 Yamaha Vino
1983 Vespa P200E
2005 Honda Jazz (Rebuilt status)
1974 Vespa 90 Smallframe (with 130cc Polini kit - this thing was a total sleeper)
2005 Vespa PX150

there is an under seat area thing you can add to it which will give you a cubby hole to put stuff.

Try a Derbi Bullet, hella fast for a 2 stroke and pretty cheap in the used market.
Two up and you'll be looking at 75-80kmh top speed on a flat road

Why go used when you can buy bland new left over for cheap, Yamaha giving 1K cash back on 09 BWs, so for $2300 (I would say $2800 after all tax and fees) you can buy a new Yamaha, if that's a bit over your budget how about 08, the Yamaha dealership in Port Moody got some 08 BW (also bland new, I heard they brought 30 of those from Yamaha Canada, now with less than 5 left). selling for $1700. so for around $2200 you can ride a new Yamaha home. never seen those selling for that cheap.

I prefer the BW... I worked at a rental shop that had the Jazz and BW and its way more convienient to have more storage and room for a passenger with the BW.
Plus you can change the drive belt and it'll do 90kmh... do a big bore kit and you can go over 110.

I'm not a long time rider, I only started riding a scooter at the beginning of the year and have just recently gotten into modding.
After these 10 months on the road, I've had some close calls.
I think a 50cc 2-stroke is barely fast enough to keep up with traffic and accelerate you out of bad situations.
I couldn't even imagine how bad riding a 4-stroke would be.
A word to the wise, gear up as best you can. You'll never really hear somebody regretting they spent too much on safety gear.
I always ride with helmet, jacket, gloves and boots.
Sure, my some friends and family harass me about over-gearing, but it's my life and a painful recovery that's on the line.
I'm going to play it safe.

and Ruckus arent as fast stock as a Jazz or BW... 10kmh makes a big difference when the Ruckus tops out around 60 and the jazz and bw keep pulling till 70

Seems like the Ruckus isn't ideal daily driver, especially if it tops out at 60km/hr
