Nothing beats Michio Kaku when it comes to explaining things like this.. im pretty sure this has been posted several times before..
What he says about type 1, 2, and 3 civilizations is a little fucking crazy. I can't really fathom how a civilization manages to control earthquakes (magnetically shifting plates within the earth) and oceans (controlled by gravitational force), and then controlling the energy of solar flares?
Everything else after that makes sense I suppose, about how civilizations might transition from one phase to another, and how it makes sense that we destroy ourselves before we even transition, which is evident by the absence of any other civilizations out there thus far. But who's to say its impossible? Statistically they tell us that there should be thousands of civilizations out there, but how many galaxies do we have in our universe? Billions, if not trillions? It'd be a statistical improbability to have met one already, but I guess I simply can't quite swallow the idea of a galactic civilization either if that were true.
2 more comments I want to make on this entire topic though:
1. What I find increasingly evident through the existance of such planets like the one aforementioned by OP is the fact that life outside our planet is most likely similar to ours, in the sense that it is theoretically all carbon based, seeing as how that is what our universe is primarily made of. Therefore I think its interesting that we can reasonably expect that any alien lifeform we encounter would be biologically similar to human beings in regards to chemical composition etc. etc., of course with some variation due to gravity, ultraviolet exposure etc.
2. Why does Stephen Hawkings think that other civilizations would be hostile? Wouldn't it make sense that a civilization which has realized that a global and unified approach to survival for a single planet would be applicable to several, perhaps tens, hundreds, and thousands of others? I'd figure after having such a tough time transitioning from a so called type 0 civilization to a type 1, we'd have learned our lessons about fighting amongst one another instead of working together. It seems like the universe is big enough for atleast 2 of us, doesn't it? But again, consider the rate at which a single civilization could multiply at, I suppose we really need the energy of stars to support trillions of gazillions of people?
type 1 civilization doesn't mean being able to control (manipulating) earthquakes and oceans. It means to be able to harness/convert the energy that it gives off.
If there is a more advanced civilization out there already, I'm sure after scanning and gathering data from us, they would come to a conclusion that we are violent and destructive by nature and we fight amongst ourselves for the smallest of reasons; not to mention we deplete resources for financial gains for the longest time without thinking of methods to preserve Mother Earth. So what reason is there for any advance civilization to come to us knowing we would rape them of their technology and resources while corrupting them with our tobacco, gambling, religion, politics, and World of Warcraft.
Maybe they find our females hot? or to hunt us like a game? Because I doubt they want to enslave us since if they have the technology to know of our existence and make contact, I'm sure they would have the techonology to make robots or some other neat methods to do what they need to do or build.
So even if they do make contact, it will not sit well with us. That is unless we can be at peace with our planet and ourselves first.

We must defeat the Goa'uld

Holy shit, I wonder what conspiracy ppl are saying right now. Even if there's nothing there, maybe we can find fossils. If there is though, even if they're not as smart as us, it probably wouldn't be hard to teach them if they've gone through a certain evolutionary stage considering we haven't really evolved much since tribes and stuff. Biologically, we're not anymore evolved than "primative" tribes.
Some people believe that our technology is all from aliens and we couldn't possibly figure all this out ourselves and we had a boost head start. There are hieroglyphics in egypt that resemble helicopters and submarines. Anyways though, if developed civilizations there we it can totally be the other way around.
how long we have to get there?
200 years of life?to get it there?
If it's 20 light years away it's about just over 117 trillion miles away. Some of our fastest interstellar probes are traveling at about 35000 mph (don't know about manned space crafts).
To sum it up, @ those speeds, I think to reach the planet we're looking at close to 380,000 years.
If dinosaurs ruled planet earth millions of years ago and apes evolving into humans...
then for sure there are some other hybrid form of biological unit in other planets that evolved.
Is it even realistic enough to have protoss-like units in our universe? Zerg could consider of some form of dinosaur lol??

When the planets align in 2012, the aliens can finally return, using the pyramids they made to open the warp gate from their planet to ours, then the invasion begins. WE NEED MORE MINERALS!

Sometimes I wish the spacerace was still going on. I think if there was pressure and everyone wanted to do it, we'd have the technology to get there in less than 100 years.
We are so arrogant, we are so conceited that we say they must visit us. We are so important. They are going to interrupt their business just so they can come to us and give is a little bit of super technology.
We are primitive species, most of our technology is based on Earth and its gravity, our space exploration is less than a hundred years old. Our definition of life is based on life that we see on earth. Our entire modern civilization only dates back to 3000+ plus years ago, as oppose to cavemans and dinosaurs from a million years ago.. Earth is billions of years old
so if someone could follow up with the LHC experiment to see if we actually have a higgs boson particle which makes inter-stellar travel a greater possibility, that would be great. thx

Or you meet some girl at the club, cum inside of her, find out shes only in grade 12, so you buy a Prada bag for her to make things right, she finds out the bag is a fake and decides to have the kid
