which macbook should I buy?
 

well since you guys helped me build quite the desktop thought i'd ask on RS which macbook to buy. don't know anything at all about apple products other then having an ipod and an iphone and before this turns into a get windows laptop instead and two sides arguing which is better :lol I just want to try it out so it doesn't really matter which is better. Most of the time I will be using my desktop with windows7 on it. anyways is there anything new around the corner I should wait for? I know there is always something but something "big"? Also any suggestions on which one to get? planning on taking it to class etc. I have a sony vaio right now but the battery went to hell so thought I'd try out a mac as well. Thinking 15" screen is good?

Macbook Pro just launched its newest version out in April so I would probably go with that. 10 hrs battery life! Pretty crazy if you ask me and the screen is phenomenal. I think the base model of the Macbook Pro is the best option given your needs.

Intel Core 2 Duo vs core i5 vs core i7?

desktop has core i7. I don't want this thing to be slow at all. At the same time I will probably never play a game on it. I don't even play games on my desktop and its a "gaming" computer lol

13" unless you have a need for a 15".

I think that a 13" is the ideal size for a laptop whereas a 15" is overly big and bulky.

yeah man a notebook that is too heavy is hard to carry and also harder to put away and move around. it is also less comfortable to have on your lap for long periods of time but the increased screen size does make it easier on the eyes if you like to leave it far out on your lap while laying on your bed

Yeah I've gone from 15.6 to 11.6 , 13.3 is the best compromise.

the 15" is i5 so it is quite a bit faster,
I have the base 13" with the 4gb ram, it's pretty good for me, my 20" mac is the same specs and it's horribly disorganized after using it for 2 years but it's still fast enough.

unless you game the 13" is enough, the screen is a little small if you do a lot of browsing with 2 windows open like me. Kind of a weird habit i developed having one youtube window while browsing rs lol.

I highly recommend google chrome, until last month I never noticed cos the internet at home was fast enough so I always use safari, but at sfu it's not very good and i found chrome to be way faster. I don't know why exactly (i'm a computer noob too) but it was! hahaha

Battery life is the main selling point because it really is quite good, the other day I forgot to charge my battery and it was DEAD, I charged it while I was getting ready to go to school (approx 20 mins) and it was good enough to last me for the 2 tutorials I had that day. on uber battery saver mode of course lol

I'm really happy that I got the aluminum unibody over a cheap plastic one (either windows or the cheaper mb's) my gf dropped hers during her lecture and it banged really loud onto the ground but upon inspection there was only a minor black mark, I licked my finger and it came right off, good as new hahaha

My vaio is 13" and I don't mind the size at all. So 13" core 2 is good? I was thinking I would have to go with the 15" since there isn't a 13" listed with a i5/i7. The guy at the apple store was telling me to buy a macbook pro 17" and then started telling me how I could just get torrent copies of software :lol :lol I don't think hes going to last very long there. If he hadn't of started talking about torrenting I would have bought the 17" matte screen i7 laptop. Now I feel like 17" would have been way too big.

For your needs, the one of the 15" models would be great - and get the non-glossy screen for sure.

I have the 17" Unibody...I take it with me for client meetings all the time. I don't think it's bulky at all. Yes, it has a big footprint, but you get used to it. I personally can't use a small, low res screen anymore.

Personal preferences I guess, if you want portability get the 13" if you want a little bit more performance get the i5 or i7 15".

Pretty much everything you can get on torrent for mac, PS CS5, Office, iWork, etc.

Don't get any of those accessories either. The HDMI adaptor I got off ebay for $5 they sell for $30 before tax, it's pretty useful though I guess. haha buy a wireless mouse and keyboard and there you go!

I wish I got the matte screen, in a way saves battery life as you don't need to turn up your brightness as much to compensate for glare if you're in a sunny environment/ bright room. I don't wanna get one off ebay and stick it on with a bunch of bubbles though haha

I don't do any gaming so the core 2 is definitely enough for me, I do download and watch a lot of movies and tv shows though and I have no complaints for speed. I didn't feel like the i5 and 15" was worth paying 50% more

The mouse takes a while to get used to but it'll be worth that time in the long run.

The glossy screen is a love/hate relationship, it doesn't bother me at all.

Then just see which version is able to run 720p or 1080p?

all of em. I have the 13" pro and its perfect, nice and portable. Good graphics nice battery

i like my 13" MB Pro, picked it up for a good price, the backlit keyboard was the hardest thing to get used to, that and if your used to a traditional touchpad, the new one takes some time to get used to, i have it dual booting 7 and OSX and in reality, i almost never boot it into windows, because the thing just isn't as fast in windows. the case is durable, and i really do like the glossy screen, i would get the 15 if i could, but the new MBP 13" with the i5 are coming out in april (if you can wait that long), i average about 5 hours on battery(full screen and keyboard), and i never shut it down, just throw it into sleep mode and walk away, the magsafe adaptor has saved it a couple of times already, and although its 13", it weighs more than my 15.4" dell inspiron 6400. and the mini mac adaptor to VGa means that i use it as a media PC too, i picked up the remote for only like i think 10$ with the machine, and the warranty (as on all laptops) is worth it, if i could, i would probably go back, and buy the 15" just for the larger screen, but i never have any trouble reading anything on this screen.

I use a Macbook as my desktop now. I was going to buy an external monitor for it .... but the 13" seems to work fine for what I do.

The macbook is quite a bit lighter.

13" MBP = 2.04kg
15.6" 6400 = 2.8kg

do u drive where you work/live?

if so, then size really does matter in both win7 and osx. With win7, u will soon see how much better you can see after putting documents side by side with the aero functions or whatever it is called. Same with osx, except it doesnt do that automatically. I have a 13 inch macbook, and the monitor size really sucks hardcore, and I get much less work efficency compared to my 21.5" imac.

I have the 13 inch MBP with 8 gigs of ram and its pretty for all I do with it. SC2 and Left 4 Dead 2 run pretty good, with Left 4 Dead running in high.

if you want speed, get the 15 inch one with HD screen.

for size, if you can wait, rumor has it they might get a new macbook air in within this month or two.

I like the size of the 13" so I went with that. Ended up going with the 2.66GHZ model. thanks for the help :). I think I may enjoy it just because its something new.

It takes about 2 weeks to figure everything out but by the first week, you should have all your basics covered.

There is a thread somewhere around here for things you should/would like to download while using a mac!

Adium is my first suggestion because MSN for macs is retarded.

Second would be VLC for all your video needs.
