LF: computer speakers recommendation

willing to spend at most ~$100.
looking for some decent 2.1 speakers, since i don't think $100 will be enough for a good set of 5.1s

http://www.bestbuy.ca/en-CA/product/...8669ebb9ceen02
i missed out on these.:(

twitchyzero 10-13-2010 09:26 PM

^ those are decent at best...but amazing bang for the buck when you used to be able to get them for $40

i'm in the same boat as OP i guess..anyone have any input on these 2 edifiers?

A lot of people won't believe this, but Edifiers are pretty damn good for their price.

I couldn't believe it until I heard them. I got a set of M3300's. I really like the 3" mid-range driver + 1/2" tweeter as opposed to the single 2" you get in similarly priced Logitechs.
$60 at NCIX

I'm a bit of a sound quality nut, so I was pleasantly surprised by these things.

tegz 10-13-2010 11:51 PM

using x-530 (same as the x-540 mentioned above, without the control knob thingy)
got it for $30 used, really cant complain lol!

palepilsenpin0y 10-13-2010 11:54 PM

I wouldn't recommend getting a Logitech. From my personal experience, two Logitechs have failed me so far.

But of course, I may have just been unlucky (I did take care of them).

Using an Altec Lansing at the moment. Forgot the specific model but if you were to choose a brand, Altecs are the way to go. Superb sound quality, excellent power, extremely reliable.

I don't recommend Logitech either, failed on me pretty fast.
Currently using M-Audios, love them

I had a 2.1 logitech setup for about 9 years, and never had any issues with it. Was an amazing little set of speakers.

Ikkaku 10-14-2010 01:45 PM

I'm using the logitech X-240 and it picks up an indo radio station, although it's only noticable when I'm not listening to music.

turb0triX 10-14-2010 04:27 PM

^ lol nice.

my current speakers are altec lansings. they're not bad, but my left speaker died on me (something wrong with the wire). the edifier's look pretty good.

gars 10-14-2010 05:25 PM

i have a set of Edifier 2.1's. They've got the bookshelf speakers - which sound AMAZING. The sub isn't the greatest, but for $100, they are amazing. Don't dismiss them because they're from China.

If you're not fussed about how they look, you can find some decent deals on ebay as well. I've found a set of Altec Lansings that retailed at $200 for $80, but there were little scratches on it - but sounded amazing.

Mugen EvOlutioN 10-14-2010 07:11 PM

ummm i have my Z2300 LOgi for 3 years never had a problem, my gf uses it, my friends uses it, my cousin uses it no complaints

They are usually around $220

see if they ever go on sale, definitely worth it

I originally got my eyes set on Z5500, unless you got a huge living room, Z2200 is more than enough

NSX 10-15-2010 09:27 AM

If you can, spend a bit more and get these:

http://www.ncix.com/products/?sku=27...acture=EDIFIER

It is crisp and clear. The sub is powerful as well. Best thing about it is that it has optical input. You can actually hook it up to your HDTV. Comes with a optical cable as well.

twitchyzero 10-15-2010 09:48 AM

^ that set seems to sell like hot cakes...i dont think i've ever seen it go on sale

Phil@rise 10-15-2010 11:30 AM

Used Z-2300's go for <$100

I remember I sold mine years ago for like $80.

Mugen EvOlutioN 10-15-2010 12:03 PM

^

best speakers among its competitor for that price range

Ikkaku 10-15-2010 12:18 PM

^ I read a lot of reviews that they are only good for bass, for acoustic they aren't very good?

!MiKrofT 10-15-2010 12:51 PM

I use the Razer Mako 2.1 THX set. Not bad. Especially since I got them from NCIX Boxing day sale.

they are hella bassy thats for sure, the Z5500 will blow your roof off

Z2200 i enough to blow your room out

Now the mids are perfect, but doesnt have a lot of highs

for the kind of music i listen to its fine

Bonka 10-15-2010 04:11 PM

Logitech's are known to be bass heavy and weak in the midrange. I've never had problems with my Z-560's though which I've had for about 8 years nor the Z-5500's I bought for my gf.

Irregardless of what you get you really need to have a good soundcard too, something along the lines of M-Audio.

How much did you pay for em?

IMO not necessary if you aren't running surround. The on-board audio on modern mobos are fine.

!MiKrofT 10-17-2010 03:30 PM

I believe they were around 149.

dachinesedude 10-17-2010 05:29 PM

I have the Logitech Z-2300 for 2 years, still running strong, very nice speakers if you listen to music with bass cuz its got a huge subwoofer, music like hip hop or trance is good, but if your into classical shit, look somewhere else

VK79 10-21-2010 07:03 PM

What would you guys suggest/recommend if space were an issue but quality sound were a priority (THX-ish level of punch). Basically I want to chuck the sub under my bed which is 8.5' tall max. Checked the S330D and sub is too large. Don't really have a budget so long as it is not something offensive like 2k+ etc.

asdfpic 10-21-2010 07:36 PM

On my personal preference I would definitely go with a set of Altec Lansings.

They don't have the overpowered bass of Logitechs but the quality of sound and reliability is much better.

There is a pair currently on sale for 50% off for $49.99 at FS.
http://www.futureshop.ca/en-CA/produ...cfa4d72942en02

If you aren't in a rush to get them I would wait for a more expensive pair to go on sale seeing that you are willing to spend $100
They are marked up high so sooner or later these will be half price.
http://www.bestbuy.ca/en-CA/product/...dce89af1f0en02

I got the old version for $80
