I have a number of good memories from heading down the brand new Coquihalla Highway to enjoy expo 86 when I was 5. I also remember the disappointment when I found out it was just a one time thing.

It was a very special event, indeed. It was such a great success. Jim Pattison was a genius and a hero. I remember going to the Canadian Pavilion and watching a short film and hearing the song, "This is my home, O Canada" for the first time. Did not see a dry face in the crowd. It was truly a special moment for Vancouverites and all Canadians. Expo 86 brought all of Canada together and showcased our beautiful city to the rest of the world.
Expo Ernie, McBarge (floating McDonald's restaurant), Science World, Plaza of Nations, BC Place Stadium, so much to see........ also Skytrain.
Three true Canadian moments (at least here in BC):
Canada's Centennial
'72 Summit Series (Team Canada vs the Godless Commies)
Expo 86
The biggest factor in its success was that it was affordable, especially for the locals. Marketing genius. The place was always crowded yet full of spectacle and "happy, happy, joy, joy". It seemed every British Columbian was a proud ambassador. Nobody spoke ill of the event and everybody pitched in. When it was all over, people cried. People who worked there rarely complained. It was a party I will never forget.

But for those who missed out, we will always have the olympics to remember!

I remember riding on the Green Machine roller coaster, and the mono rail.
They had the giant hockey stick and puck, and all the different pavillions.
McBarge and the 2 floor mcDonalds on Main and terminal. The McD's is still there, but they don't use the second for seating anymore.

26 years later, vancouver house prices reach unaffordable levels.
To be fair, False Creek was a pretty nasty place before Expo arrived. But, nevertheless, there are lots of people who believe that Vancouver has taken a turn for the worse since Expo.
I'm personally ambivalent about things. Vancouver was great until about the late 90s, early 2000s.
If you head North on Willingdon til you hit Penzance Dr., take a right and you'll see the McBarge tied up in the middle of the inlet.
I was 10 during Expo. I had to do katas at the Japan Pavillion 4 times a week as I was part of the Vancouver Karate Club on Kingsway (anyone remember Sensei Pat McCarthy?).

I was 6 at the time. My only memories are that their was a old Formula 1 race car there, I got to sit in it and I couldn't reach the pedals.
Oh, and their were these cars made out of concrete you could sit in. Besides that, that's all I can remember. I was 6. If it was not a car or car related... I did not care.
