Vancouver Expo 86 Well i was too young to remember this (born in '84), not to mention, my family move here in '94 but thought id share this, especially those older and who actually remember this event.. 26 years ago, the expo ended October 13th 1986 |
Totally wish I was around to visit this event. |
I only remember some of the expo...I was pretty young when it came. I did find the stamp book with all the pavilion stamps in it not too long ago. |
I have a number of good memories from heading down the brand new Coquihalla Highway to enjoy expo 86 when I was 5. I also remember the disappointment when I found out it was just a one time thing. |
I was 2. GREAT memories. |
dam.. i missed out |
26 years later, vancouver house prices reach unaffordable levels. |
Any one got any good retro photos? |

26 Years ago, you were born, 24 years ago expo happened :troll: |
It was a very special event, indeed. It was such a great success. Jim Pattison was a genius and a hero. I remember going to the Canadian Pavilion and watching a short film and hearing the song, "This is my home, O Canada" for the first time. Did not see a dry face in the crowd. It was truly a special moment for Vancouverites and all Canadians. Expo 86 brought all of Canada together and showcased our beautiful city to the rest of the world. Expo Ernie, McBarge (floating McDonald's restaurant), Science World, Plaza of Nations, BC Place Stadium, so much to see........ also Skytrain. Three true Canadian moments (at least here in BC): Canada's Centennial '72 Summit Series (Team Canada vs the Godless Commies) Expo 86 The biggest factor in its success was that it was affordable, especially for the locals. Marketing genius. The place was always crowded yet full of spectacle and "happy, happy, joy, joy". It seemed every British Columbian was a proud ambassador. Nobody spoke ill of the event and everybody pitched in. When it was all over, people cried. People who worked there rarely complained. It was a party I will never forget. |
i was 3 years old when this happened. the only thing i can remember from it were fireworks. |
I was only 1 yr old. All I have from Expo86 are pictures. I don't remember anything. |
i was 1, supposedly i went... and slept the entire time hahahaha |
it was 2 months before I was born :( But for those who missed out, we will always have the olympics to remember! :) |
I have a expo 86 parking lot sign or something in my closet lol. My dad picked it up when the expo was wrapping up. |
I went when I was 1 year old...85er here LOL |
I was 9 when Expo happened. I remember riding on the Green Machine roller coaster, and the mono rail. They had the giant hockey stick and puck, and all the different pavillions. McBarge and the 2 floor mcDonalds on Main and terminal. The McD's is still there, but they don't use the second for seating anymore. |

I'm personally ambivalent about things. Vancouver was great until about the late 90s, early 2000s. |
I was 5 when this happened. I barely remember anything. |
If you head North on Willingdon til you hit Penzance Dr., take a right and you'll see the McBarge tied up in the middle of the inlet. I was 10 during Expo. I had to do katas at the Japan Pavillion 4 times a week as I was part of the Vancouver Karate Club on Kingsway (anyone remember Sensei Pat McCarthy?). IIRC they built the "ALRT" just for Expo. |
I was 6 at the time. My only memories are that their was a old Formula 1 race car there, I got to sit in it and I couldn't reach the pedals. :bigthumb: Oh, and their were these cars made out of concrete you could sit in. Besides that, that's all I can remember. I was 6. If it was not a car or car related... I did not care. :p |
not alive yet |
i was minus 3 YO at the time...but at least it's nice enough to be born in the late 80's |
