I’m the only authority on XLBs as I’m shanghainese. I’m telling you this hao chi Lai is more legit. Ask Dark, I also sent his ass there to research authenticity
This lady speaks shanghainese, rolls her own wrappers by hand everyday and makes them from scratch. The filling is only pork and not some horseshit like crab meat or ginger. Nah. Straight up porky goodness

What do you guys think of R&H in Lansdowne? My coworker hyped it up so I brought my dad with me there once.
Ladies at the front were wrapping the XLB so I knew they were fresh. Tasted pretty good.

These are my favourite XLB because I grew up eating this stuff. Mom worked for the owner of that company so he'd always give us bags for free when we ran out.
I wonder if eating those caused me to be a bit pickier about XLB.
I remember going to Din Tai Fung in Taipei and I thought it was just ok.
I'll have to try R&H again. I hate ginger, but I remember that those were pretty good.

I think at least the boss lady at Long's also speaks Zaon Hey Wu (ie. Shanghaiese, for our non-Chinese speaking RS-ers here), and I would be very surprised that the old ladies wrapping XLB at these smaller food places don't speak the language either.
At any rate, from a language preservation's POV, I think you should totally speak Zaon Hey Wu when you are ordering at a Shanghaiese food joint. Because when a language doesn't get used, that's when it will start fading away.
And while we are at it -- Shanghaiese is not a local dialect -- the Wu language is totally a full fledge language in its own right, just as Cantonese (the Yue language) is a full blown language on its own. The CCP would like people to think these non-Mandarin languages are all just uncivilized regional dialects, thereby belittling them and causing them to fade out of existence. But language is culture, and I despise any planned and deliberate acts that try to stamp languages out. Quote:

Fucking Chinese government. Us shanghainese are all dying as these kids nowadays speak mandarin and even at home they don’t speak shanghainese. My cousins all have this fucked up shanghainese mandarin accent. Sounds like nah de ning (foreigners) or Shang wu Ning (farmers)

Ok, I might be biased af, but I've tried my share of XLBs including the "best" that Shanghai locals know about.
But I've found that Taiwan has the best XLBs out there. Not Ding Tai Fong ones... but some local shops in Taiwan.
I'd go as far as saying that when it comes to XLBs, any shop in Taiwan that specializes in XLBs can rival the best Shanghai has to offer and there are no comparables for the best in Taiwan.
One thing that Shanghai absolutely destroys is the fresh panfried bum. That's a must-eat if you are ever in Shanghai. You can skip XLB entirely and you wouldn't be missing much as good FPB in Shanghai is

first of all. REAL Shanghainese Xiao long bao doesn't have that paper thin bullshit you Taiwanese guys call a pei, too thin is no good. It has to be thin, but not TOO THIN. It needs to be steamed in a bamboo steamer thats been steaming the same XLBs for countless generations so it doesnt have a "bambooey" smell but instead have that doughy smell from fresh man tou.
Next juice needs to be absolutely clear when exploded, cant have bloody pork residue inside and if you put ginger inside the filling, go DIE NOW you guangdong bastard.
youre right about the fried buns though, the san jie mu tou is fucking legit. my favorite
Edit: i just realized i never answered HEHE directly. To be honest, im sure there are great shanghainese places in tawian. A lot of us fled to taiwain and hong kong when those bastards came knocking. I was in hong kong eating shanghainese food and i was like this shit aint bad..... it has a more authentic taste than even some of the stuff in shanghai nowadays.
