Whats a good place to work at when its your first time working?

Okay soo , I'm just wondering if you guys can help me think of any good place to work at for your first time? I'm a youth so there's not many places to work cause of school... also , i dont want to work at Mc Donalds.

maybe retail since you don't wanna work at mcdonald's. the first job i had i was waiter/busboy haha

My first job was at McDonalds and it's a really good learning environment in terms with dealing with customer service.

Since you said you don't want to work there, you can work at retail locations like American Eagle, Foot locker, Champs, etc... Just drop by a mall and ask for an application. All of them hiring year round.

Or you can work in a restaurant as a dishwasher or line cook. Though a lot of places make you start off as a dishwasher.

most retail stores are hiring for seasonal employees right now.

do you have your lisence? How about pizza delivery?
It pays pretty good.

You dont have many choices as your limits are quite restrictive.

Rethink Mcdonalds. It's one of Canada's top 50 employers for a reason.
You will learn lots about customer service, how to run a store, and food safety.
Most recongized empolyers will approve of Mcdonald's highly if you stay there for at least a year.
The training you and connections at Mcdonald's is only going to help you in the future.

Otherwise, the Michael's on Broadway is hirining.

I agree that you should possibly rethink the ideal of working at McDonalds. Let me guess, you don't want to work there b/c you think it's embarrassing and people will laugh at you? Maybe, maybe not but this is actually a good first place to work and will probably benefit you more then you think down the road.

haha no, it was at a retirement centre. if you want, why don't you work at the panago call centre. that's where i used to work for sometime, pay is $9/hr and it's easy

For sure, I worked there all through high school and it was a great learning experience for the working world.

Id recommend it for any younger person looking for a first job.

You can't be picky for your first job, you gotta start SOMEWHERE. You can't expect an easy first job.

McD is pretty good. Job isn't too hard and you learn a lot. Not to mention they don't usually get mad at people there and the hours are really flexible.

Working retail is ok too but some stores require you go make a set amount of sales. If you don't then you get bitch at.

Restaurant is not bad but they usually will want you to stay still closing as till which sometimes means you get of around 1am or even later so it will be tough if you have no car.

Movie theathers isn't bad bAut again most likely you will stay till maybe till 12:30am or even later.

Supermarket isn't bad. I work at the fish dept before lol. Not bad at all and work is pretty easy. The only issue is the smell. If you can handle the smell then is fine.

Or you can try some labour work if you are fit enough. You get to work out while getting paid which isn't too bad. For one summer I used to help this guy do garden work. He would drive around to different people house to do garden work(well more like I do the hard stuff and he does the easy stuff). Pay was good. The only bad part about these physical work is that you get really tired after work(at least for the first week). Once you get use to it, is pretty easy.

How young exactly are we talking? 15ish i'd imagine?

I'd probably say if you're not wanting to work fast food, then try the retail area.

Consider applying at some clothing retailers that sell clothes with which you wouldn't mind wearing so you can get some benefit out of your discount at the same time.

With the holidays coming up many retailers are hiring for seasonal/christmas employees and there's usually opportunity beyond that if you're any good.

Keep in mind that as your first job, especially one that is entry-level, you probably shouldn't be expecting too too much.

Legit places require you to be at least 16 unless you have the signed approval of a/both guardian(s)...

Line cook really requires nothing. They will train you for everything but like HSK said, expect to be a dishwasher for sometime before they promote you to line cook. And if you're wondering, yes, being a dishwasher sucks. I would rather work at McDonald's than be a dishwasher.

McDonalds will teach you a lot of transferable skills that employers look for.

Teamwork
communication
how to handle pressure
planning (if you work in the back)
attention to detail


list probably goes on - but some i could think of.

My first gig was at Mcdix, and every other non-professional job i had afterward was impressed that i worked for /started out at mcdonalds.

^same here, but for in my case, even the professional job I'm working now was all possible because of my time working at McD back in the days.

As others have suggested (I am only parroting what they've already said) - Reconsider working at McDonald's. The level of training and real world experience is second to none especially while you're in high school. Your future employers would prefer seeing a resume of a candidate with work experience at McDonald's over somebody who has never worked there. The skills and experiences I've learned at McDonald's (when I worked there as my first job) are so invaluable, I still have no regrets working there to this day. I, too, will also say that my work experience at McDonald's has attributed to my successful professional career in telecommunications.

And if you have buddies working at mcd's its actually not that bad.
