getting at cc at 19 is not dumb...just use it within your means.
it's not true student visa is only limited to $2k...i am on it and they keep bugging me to raise it to $4k.
My next card in 6 months is going to be the MBNA MC after hearing about all the great rewards/benefits.

I've had a cc since I was 16 with a 5k limit. Never had to pay a dollar in interest. Just think of it as a debit card; don't buy what you can't afford to pay off right away. Quote:

I tried, they wouldn't lower than $2000 limit plus i need to do $2000 deposit as well... The best i can get is $1500 limit with $1500 deposit.

OP i started off like you, super hesitant to not use the debit card anymore. but then i realized the credit card is really the same if you pay it off regularly ( i do it every two weeks), plus you get rewards/rebates, and it's safer than getting your debit card skimmed. I'm using the td infinite travel or something like that. I use it to pay for my school and work stuff so the travel $ adds up pretty quick.
i only use my debit card at tim hortons because they don't take visa lol

I got my own CC from TD Canada Trust at 18, wasn't a terrible idea at all. Used it like it was a debit card or when it was an immediate emergency that I could pay off within 3 weeks.
Only thing was, I had a lot of trouble getting one. I'm assuming it was cause my parents' credit was absolute shit (and before you guys say anything, I never borrowed or took any money from them. My dad is just horrible with impulse purchases).
I had to get a part time job to prove that I had money coming in to pay off the card (they wanted me to bring in two paystubs from the job) and then I had to put down a 500 deposit for a 500 limit card.
In any case, I'll say it was worth it. Having a credit card just makes purchasing things that much easier. Especially if you make a lot of online purchases.
For the people in this thread who had 1k-5k limits for their first card, were your parents/guardians/whathaveyou considered wealthy at the time?

Times must have changed. Had no problems getting my first visa back in the day (over a decade ago . . . ugh). No co-signer and maybe not even a part time job yet. All I had was a few grand in my savings and maybe some mutual funds.

Got my credit card around 19. Only $500 limit from TD, then upgraded me to $1000 last year. Maybe for a period of a time I didn't pay it on time, so they didn't ask to upgrade.
I signed up for a BMO one because the teller wouldn't let me go and I didn't have to sign any forms since I had an account there. Right off the bat 3k limit.

I got denied when I was 19, and i was making about 25 grand annually too 
This was with CIBC.
I had to call CIBC and bitch at them for getting denied.
In the end I got what I wanted

^ Wow, were you at student at that time or did you not pay your phone bills etc? I got my first cc when I was working at mcds pt at the age of 17 and surprisingly they offered me a 5k limit
