VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - There is a massive sinkhole in Vancouver. It's at Southeast Marine Drive just west of Fraser Street and it began developing somewhere over the noon hour.
The road is completely shut down and will likely be that way for the next several hours.
There are reports a gas line was hit but there is no word that anyone has been injured. Businesses in the area have been evacuated.
If you have photos or video send them to news1130.ckwx@rogers.com.

That sinkhole could turn into a huge one that could take out half a block. Now we really don't want that.

Also, I hope this isn't the type of liquefactoin we expect in richmond if the big ones hits... lol

twitchyzero 12-12-2010 02:44 PM

so who's trying to dig to china?

BNR32_Coupe 12-12-2010 02:48 PM

Hey guys I managed to dig up some more footage on the sinkhole.

Apparently it's an underground tunnel dug out from north korea all the way across the pacific.

witnesses first noticed a small asian man coming out of the ground:

upon further inspection inside the tunnel revealed:

inside the tunnel, officials noticed what appeared to be a north korean soldier guarding an entrance...

i think in terms of what we usually get in vancouver, this would be considered "massive" for our city, either way, it will cost a lot of money, and a lot of time to plug that bitch up

fliptuner 12-12-2010 05:37 PM

WHY COULDN'T THIS HAPPEN IN A BIKE LANE???

first thing I noticed was the Subway.

then I saw the sinkhole.

but my brain went back to the subway and thought of Eat Fresh.

Death2Theft 12-12-2010 06:19 PM

Well at least it's close to the city dump so they could plug that up pretty easily if they wanted to.

!LittleDragon 12-12-2010 06:24 PM

I went to look at it around 5:30. It's bigger than that now.

A large sinkhole collapsed on SE Marine Drive in Vancouver on Sunday afternoon, swallowing a piece of road and forcing crews to close the busy route.

Murray Wightman, manager of street operations for the city, described it as a "major road cave-in" on the south side of the street, which is a commuter artery along the southern edge of the city near Richmond.

Wightman said SE Marine Drive is closed for a full city block between Fraser and Poplar streets. He said the sinkhole is about nine metres wide, 14 metres long and nine metres deep.

"The road has let go. It took out a 12-inch water main and a three-inch gas line. Both water and gas have been shut off and now we're in the process of getting crews in to start working on repairing everything," he said.

Wightman said it's not clear what caused the sinkhole. A water main was found damaged underneath, but crews didn't know whether the broken water main caused the sinkhole, or vice versa.

He acknowledged the closure will be a big inconvenience.

"It is going to be very problematic for the morning commute," he said.

"We've got about 30 feet of asphalt that is still being held up but that's completely undermined down below so it couldn't withstand the weight of anything."

Wightman said the situation could have been much worse.

"There was no property damage … nobody on the road at the time when it happened, no cars passing by, so there was a lot of luck on this one," he said.

"But [there's] still a lot of damage to the road and to the utilities underneath the road."

Wightman said he's hoping the road will be open again by Tuesday.

The sinkhole also caused problems for city buses on Sunday. A TransLink spokesperson said the No. 100 and No. 8 buses have both been rerouted off SE Marine Drive. Transit users are being advised to check the TransLink website before heading out.
