So you just called them and told them you want to upgrade? and the smc modem/router is not required? I'm using their motorola docis modem . I'm asking cause i remember reading some where that the docis can't support the 100Mbps throughput.

^ you can't use that motorola, for a while shaw was carrying a docsis3 capable motorola modem, but switched it for a much cheaper and crappier smc router/modem combo. You would have to get the discontinued motorola docsis3 modem somehow.

Damn guess i'll wait till they move on from SMC. Hope there's enough people complaint and make them switch over to better brand. In the mean time i'll suffer from this shitty ass speed

Why dont you guys just switch to telus?
I have high speed turbo for $25 a month forever and its 15 mbps CONSTANT its a dedicated line.
So even if my whole entire neighborhood has it I will still get 15 mbps

I've heard rumors that they're gonna upgrade to the cisco modems sometime this summer, so it should be soon. Right now the SMC modem in bridge/gateway mode is fine, as its just acting as the modem.

As for the terrible speeds, it could be that they're adding infrastructure to those areas to accomodate for the 100mbps and 250mbps phases and just not telling anyone. A few years back they did that in my area which was kind of annoying haha..

The best way is to just simply call up shaw technical support, tell them where you live, and your account# if they ask for it. After you get that sorted out, you can tell them that you want your SMC modem/wireless router set into bridge/gateway mode as you have your own router and do not need the wifi capabilities of the SMC modem. It'll take about 10 minutes for the guy to sort it out, but once he's done the SMC modem will reset itself, he'll ask you to check if it still works, usually by just connecting an ethernet cable directly to the modem and see if you have internet access.

Once this is done you're free to hook up whatever router you want.

Pretty lame that they lock it down like that and don't give u the password. It sounds like they're just remote accessing into the router config page and making the change.

Yeah, they do give you a password, but you can't change anything, I tried it a few times everytime it reset went back to default settings. So yeah they pretty much just access it remotely.

Total cost was about $125 to switch my services. A one-time fee, and I don't have to worry about paying phone bill again. It's unlimited Canada calling by the way.

Basically, your cordless/corded phone is connected to a ATA adapter (with 2 lines, if you purchase the PAP2T-NA), and the ATA is connected to your router. Change a few settings in your ATA adapter and your router (QOS). Voila, it's up.

In my opinion, it's much better than traditional landline, cause you can track everything online (call logs, voicemail messages, call forwarding, etc). It comes with free call display too.

Yeah the 100mbps will automatically be switched to 250mbps down in Phase II. In my opinion, Telus doesn't have the infrastructure in place to achieve the internet speed that Shaw can provide to their customers. Not anytime soon.

Here's why, the technology that Telus uses for their Optik TV is shit. Most of the bandwidth is consolidated for IPTV. They can barely squeeze enough bandwidth for their television users, so it's not much left for their internet users.

Take a look at the HD channels on Telus's Optik TV, it's worse of that of Shaw's HD cause they need to compress their data so much to provide their television service; therefore, the picture and sound quality suffers tremendously. They barely have enough bandwidth to sufficiently provide "HD" content to their televison base customers. Forget internet users.
lets just hope telus will improve their network pretty soon! i can't do anything right now since i just moved to telus from shaw and i got the agreement which is 3 years for the tv and 2 years for the internet.. Oh well.. so far i think the hd on the optik is pretty good.. i dont watch tv that much since busy with work... but internet is pretty good even though someone is watching tv... i just want to have a faster download and upload speeds that would be similar to what shaw is offering right now with their broadband 50 and 100 ...

Not quite the 47ish I've been getting before (Broadband 50) but hopefully this is a good sign that things will be back to normal soon.

Are you on the Broadband 50? if so, are you using the SMC Network modem?

if you are, what color is the DS indicator on your modem?

GREEN: Area not upgraded
BLUE: Area upgraded for Broadband 50, 100, 250
