Budget PC with $800 is this good?

So I have a budget of around $800 for a new computer/ I already have the monitior , Student version of Win7. Here is what I assembly:

Processor (CPU) AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition Quad Core Processor 3.2GHZ AM3 8MB Cache 125W Retail Box
$159.65

Motherboard Gigabyte GA-870A-UD3 AMD870 ATX AM3 DDR3 1PCI-E 2PCI RAID HD Sound GBLAN SATA3 USB3.0 Motherboard
(GA-870A-UD3)
$105.98

DDR3 Memory (RAM) G.SKILL F3-10666CL7D-4GBECO Eco PC3-10666 4GB 2X2GB DDR3-1333 CL7-7-7-21 1.35V Memory Kit
(F3-10666CL7D-4GBECO)
$77.25

Video Cards GeForce GTX 460 675MHZ 1024MB PCI-E Dual DVI Mini HDMI
$209.99

Computer Case Coolermaster Elite 310 Black W/ Red Trim ATX Mid Tower Case 4X5.25 6X3.5INT 1X3.5EXT No PSU Window
$45.99

Power Supply Coolermaster Extreme Power Plus 550W ATX 12V V2.3 Silent Power Supply 20/24PIN 120MM Fan
(RS550-PCARE3)
$59.98

Hard Drives Western Digital Caviar Blue 500GB SATA2 7200RPM 16MB 8.9MS 3.5IN NCQ Hard Drive OEM 3YR MFR Warranty
(WD5000AAKS)
$47.81

DVD Writer LG GH22NS50 Black 22X SATA DVD Writer OEM
$25.99

And of coz the $50 Assembly fee since I haven't built any PC for years and years so better leave it for NXIC to do it. I will be mainly using this PC for games (Warcraft, Starcraft2, CoD, and Diabl 3 when it comes out), watching online video(Netflix and other HD movies I have), and surfing the Internet and doing homework. I am not too worry about the HD space as I have 4 HD right now to back up my data. I want this PC to last a good 5 years or more if possible.

I currently have a PC with a Intel e7400 CPU 2.80gz, 4GB of DD2 or 3(not sure) RAM, ATI Radeon HD5600 1GB DD3(I think is DDR 3). I am able to play WoW in medium to high settings while StarCraft2 and CoD I have to tone the graphcis down to low to medium low(especially CoD). Also it takes a long time to load say CoD up and other programs like photoshop. Otherwise I have no complains with my current pc.

Just wondering can anyone give me any suggestions as to if this build is a good setup for me or is there anything that can be improve. Thank you.

Can't u wait another month or two for the new intel CPU and board?

Btw, u need a video card and maybe a SSD, rather than a whole system, oh And u need a better power supply

Mr.HappySilp 12-23-2010 05:52 AM

Video card and PSU is in there.

asian_XL 12-23-2010 07:14 AM

I mean just replace your existing ATi 5600 with a GTX460 first. As you said you play games most of the time. E7400 is not the really the bottleneck here, you need a better GPU.

Don't know if you like the idea of overclocking. E7400 should give you a nice 3.8 - 3.9ghz with a decent heatsink.

If you really don't want to build your own computer, then see if Memory Express has the same/similar parts for the same~ price. They offer free computer assembly, and also there is no restocking fee(while NCIX charges like 15%)

any chance of spending an extra $100 and opting for a i5 760/mobo instead?

I would do this or even spring for a 1366 board, maybe wait till the older ati cards go on sale like the 5970.

Mr.HappySilp 12-27-2010 08:55 PM

With the boxing week sale I got something like this

Samsung SH-S223C 22X DVD Writer SATA Black OEM $14.99
Arctic Cooling Alpine 64 Pro AM2 AM3 S939 500-2000RPM 36CFM Heatsink Fan $6.99
MSI GeForce GTX 460 Fermi Cyclone OC 725MHZ 768MB GDDR5 Dual DVI Mini-HDMI DX11 PCI-E Video Card $128.97
NCIX Gaming Bundle Deal AMD Phenom II X6 1055T & MSI 790GX-G65 CrossFire DDR3 Motherboard $279.99
Kingston HyperX KHX1600C9D3K2/4GX 4GB 2X2GB DDR3-1600 CL9 Intel XMP Dual Channel Memory Kit $49
Antec Three Hundred Mini Tower Gaming Case 300 ATX 3X5.25 6X3.5INT No PS Front USB & Audio $39.99

Coolermaster Extreme Power Plus 600W ATX 12V V2.3 Silent Power Supply 20/24PIN 120MM Fan $49.99
PC Assembly and Testing With 1 Year Limited NCIX System Warranty (PRE-CONFIG WIN. OS If Purchased) $50

with tax and everything it comes up to $773.53 which isn't too bad I guess.

I was all ready to buy a computer from NCIX at what I thought were pretty epic unbelievable pricing but they didnt have all the stuff in stock. My buddy had heard about Memory Express and mentioned we should go check it out, so we headed out to Richmond. They had EVERYTHING in stock and put together a MUCH better system for only $50 more. I will not be dealing with NCIX's shit service any longer, Memory Express had the stuff in stock, they had a knowledgeable salesperson, and didnt make me wait around like friggin livestock.

Hope that helps.

-Mark (Former NCIX, now Memory Express fan)

yuusha 12-27-2010 09:16 PM

^ Shoulda spent less on the processor and more on the video card, 768mb version 460GTX is sorta blah, but at least you got a good deal on 'em

lowside67 12-27-2010 09:28 PM

I went and dug up my receipt, I ended up buying this:
AMD Phenom II X4 955 3.2GHz 8mb - $154.99
Asus M4A87TD Evo Motherboard - $114.99
Corsair Dominator 4gb 1600MHz C8 DHZ - $89.99
WD 1TB SATAIII 7200rpm BLACK - $79.99
Samsung 22x DVDRW SATA oem - $15.19
HIS Radeon 5850 1gb DDR5 - $189.99
Antec Hardcore Gamer 500W Bronze PSU - $69.99
Antec Three Hundred Case - $39.99 (I was going to get the same case/psu as you, they said that I should go for this combo as it has substantially better cooling and a much more reliable PSU)

Windows 7 Home Prem 64bit - $99.81
LG W2442P-BF 24" 2ms Black Tilt/Height Adjust LCD - $189.99

Not a hardware expert but a few buddies of mine seemed to think it was better than the options that I was looking at at NCIX (they were closing out an old style mobo/CPU and the cheap case).

Mr.HappySilp 12-28-2010 12:18 AM

I order a pc at memory express before but they make me come all the way to richmond to pay and it wouldn't be done on the same. So I ask them can I do something like NCIX did and make the payment online and come pick up the PC when it is ready and bring my ID and CC with them. They said no which I don't really believe.

Sweet! I have a very similar build as urs.. same processor, and a 1GB GTX 460.

I've had to really overclock that CPU to get any good gaming power out of the 1055T, so don't be disappointed if you load up a game and expect a AMD 6 core to beat the i5/i7 right out of the box, the AMD 6cores are beastly overclockers!

Mr.HappySilp 12-30-2010 03:39 PM

I am still deciding if I should get some intake fans or not....... The case comes with 2 fans, one for the back and one of the top. I might add one of the side and 1 to 2 in the front. Still thinking. Fans are liek 8 dollars each lol and I am too cheap to spend it =D

Ya, just make sure the temps stay under 50~55oC under load b/c the max temp. they can handle is 63oC and the temp sensors are not the most accurate.

If they rise near that after OC, might wanna get a better CPU fan

Mr.HappySilp 01-01-2011 01:33 PM

NCIX is starting to piss me off. I phone on Wed and Fri to check the status of my PC and is everything in stock. Both times they said everything is in stock. I then got an E-mail Fri night saying the RM I order is out of stock. I was like WTF :fuckyea: I just talk to them earlier and that person said everything is fine.

Anyways I sent them an E-mail stating how their rep say everything is fine and good to go. So to me either they did not look into the details, or is just making stuff up. I ask them to add another set of RAM that is on sale to the order. If they are out of stock again I am just going to cancel the whole order.

I call 2 times to make sure everything is alright NCIX did not do their part.

dignatas 01-01-2011 01:47 PM

lol memory express and NCIX looks the same imo... Here is a list of things that are different

-restocking fee, NCIX does 15% where as ME does nothing which is PRETTY BIG

-ME pricematch beats competitors price by 5%, where as NCIX beats it but it doesn't state... could be just matching as well

-NCIX has its own forum which you can special order specific products and the community is REALLY good.

So I just purchase 3 Antec TriCool 120MM Case Fan 3-SPEED 1200
http://ncix.com/products/index.php?s...ufacture=Antec
Should I use them all as intake (2 front and 1 on the side)? The case comes with 1 120mm (exhast) and 1 140mm fan on the top of the case).
Case is Antec Three Hundred Mini Tower Gaming Case 300

tegz 01-06-2011 07:41 PM

^From what I understand..

Side should be intake to cool CPU HSF

Front should be intake at a low position to draw cool air

Rear should be exhaust at high position to let hot rising air out

Btw, how do u like the computer so far?

Mr.HappySilp 01-06-2011 08:04 PM

^^ Haven't had it yet -_- NCIX is still building it lol. It should be ready by early next week. Just getting all the info and stuff so I can over clock to the best I could.

Got the computer today  haven't Overclock yet but so far everything seems pretty smooth. Still downloading some games and stuff so will have to wait for that. I am going to overclock the Video card as well as the CPU (not sure about the RAM yet). But I notice it is alreayd pretty fast as of right now.

Nice build,

my computer is very similar to this build aswell,

bought that same bundle x6 1055t processor & msi mobo
8gb xms3 ram
xfx radeon hd5770 1gb
60 gb ocz ssd - 500 gb caviar black hd
700w ocz psu
coolermaster haf 912 case (sick case for the price, ~$50.00)

Have you tried how your computer fairs with the Windows Experience Index??

Excellent computer when it comes to SC2 (max settings), Battlefield Bad Company 2 Vietnam, etc.

Add an aftermarket heatsink and you're golden. Anyone try to overclock it to 4ghz with turbo off?

tegz 01-11-2011 01:37 PM

ya i had it at 3990mhz but downed it to 3.8 now bc i didnt see any difference in performance to 3.8 but the temps were noticably higher at loads

Mr.HappySilp 01-11-2011 06:55 PM

Sadly I brought the PC back to NCIX for repairs ><
When playing HD/games (Battlefiled2, CoD) the color is all weird and all over the place. Try to unstaill and reinstall the drivers and no help. Change resolution Occt test shows about 7500 errors in a 30mins 3D test. Did 3D benchmark 11 and I can not complete the full test. It will say something like Windows lost focus.

Haven't OC anything yet. The ppl at NCIX suggested it could be faulty RAM or bad video card and is going to take at least 7 days to take a look at it -_-

Bad luck I guess.
