They (the American/Western governments) have everything to lose.
The archetypical case is Iran. In the 1950's a democratically elected and progressive leader was elected who used his powers to nationalize the oilfields. At the time, 90+ % of the profits from oil went to British Petroleum while the Iranians at home starved. For Prime Minister Mossedegh, this was thoroughly unacceptable and went to great lengths to negotiate a fairer deal with the British. The British refused to compromise so Mossedegh kicked them out (similar events has taken place recently in Venezuela). The British revolted by tasking the American CIA to covertly overthrow Iran's DEMOCRATICALLY ELECTED government and imposed one of the most oppressive regimes in Iranian history that is the Shah. After decades of violent oppression, the Mullah's overthrew the American puppet regime.
Today, Iran (and Iraq before the invasion) is condemned at every opportunity because they are the only Middle Eastern state that refuses to submit to American neo-colonialsm.

Why are people bringing up the pyramids? The pyramids have nothing to do with Politics! They will not get vandalized!
This is about the citizens, the country and who runs it. The citizens are sick of their president and will not have his son step into power for another 30years.
I'm in full support of the citizens and hope they get what they deserve! A voice!

^Its egypt so they talk about the only thing they know about egypt.
Serious hypathetical question though; If the Canadian government were to ever implement measures as extreme as Egypt do you think Canadian citizens would revolt like this?
Reasons I ask is
a) We do have a different mindset, not to say we are pussies but violence is sporadic/isolated to certain areas/people and I believe the prevailing consensus is that people believe violence is never right
b) Geographically it would be much harder to get people together, especially if the internet was blocked like in Egypt
hopefully we'll never have to find out though

Dude, you have no idea what people are capable of. Just because right now we're living comfortably, everything is a constant struggle, such is life. Any moment things could change and your freedoms could be challenged. And you bet your ass that people would resort to violence. We would resort to terrorism and blowing our selves up for our beliefs too, don't kid your self, we would do the same things that the terrorists do because we would have a way of justifying it all and we wouldn't stop until we're free.

blowing ourselves up for our beliefs? I hardly think so.
willing to risk our lives because its better than living with current conditions, ya I can see that.
Would be easier if guns were more available. Hell lots of people dont even vote so I guess we would have to get to the brink before we see people moved to action.

I simply love the fact I live in greatest country in the world. Thing is...people here dont realize what solidarity is...and how we can work together for the better future.
I feel like we have to work on->
- cutting annual taxes,(forget HST fight; its not really a big problem: do some research; we all benefit from Harmonized tax)
- lowering gas prices,
- approving unlimited internet bandwidth !!
Go Canada! we need real democracy here; not (what I call) `socialistic-democracy` government we currently have to deal with... =(
and good luck to all Egyptians in the M.E., they must succeed.
