he wrote down your driver license number so he has proof it was you. It's very common in certain parts of the city that see lots of credit card fraud. People go to lots of stores with stolen credit cards and buy a shit ton of tickets so if they win anything it's basically laundered.

Had that happen to me once. I refused to let him finish writing my DL# down because thats some deep level personally identifiable information. I snatched the DL off the counter and the guy looked at me like I had suddenly done something wrong.

I asked him what he was doing and all he could say was "It all good bro. It all good bro. Give back!"

Without a reasonable explanation as to why he was doing what he was doing, there was no way in hell I was going to let him have my DL#.
Anyone who has spent even a little time working in a fraud department will know that him having my DL #, my first and last name, and my CC# is a formula for disaster.

I keep it in my plastic sleeve in my wallet that folds out. The wallet stays in my hand the whole time. He can see my name and match it to my card from there.
If the guy is that suspicious of my sub-$10 transaction he can cancel that shit and I'll take my business somewhere else.

I was working as a BCLC lottery retailer.

I do not recall any direct BCLC regulations mentioning we have the authority to COPY customers' personal information from their proper ID.

If we felt someone is using a credit card that is not his/her, we would ask he/she to produce a proper ID (ie. BCDL/BCID/Passport,etc). It had to match excatly with the name on the Credit Card.

Which retailer was it?

If you really wanted to do something about it, this is the BCLC customer hotline: 1-866-815-0222

If they have enough proof that this retailer is doing something beyond their authority, BCLC could permanley suspend their operating license.

You can call the customer hotline to make a complain/ express your concerns, BCLC might be sending "undercover" customers to check on them.

Ranges from like 25 cents to $2

You can't gamble on credit without a surcharge

one time when i was really young before the stores had the ticket scanning machines

i gave my ticket to the clerk to check if I won and he said I won 50$ but when i asked for the ticket back to confirm he said it was against the law cause he already rang it in.

to this day I wonder if that ticket was worth a couple million or not FML

I'd like to know as well..? I always buy my tickets with my Visa and never noticed anything.. interesting.

Hmm, I thought I bought this week's ticket on my Visa, but it's not on my statement.. maybe I didn't.

I think it all depends on your credit card firms. They may have policy saying they would add surcharges for any transcations less than $2??

I do not think the credit card surcharge issue has anything to do with BCLC.

Credit card companies charge a flat rate for what ever you buy. Ranging from around 1.7% to 2.5% depending on the type of credit card and the deal the store has with there possessor.

There is no extra charge for lotto purchases.

Not true, I was going to buy lotto with my credit card and the clerk told me I should use cash/debit instead to avoid a $5 charge. My sister also got charged $5 for a lotto purchase using credit card. We use pc mastercard if that makes any difference.

a post from that thread

This is correct, some of the newer card with updated terms has added lottery tickets/subscriptions to be consider as cash equivalents/cash advance.
Last time I checked:
the MBNA premier rewards platinum plus, DOES consider it as cash advance.
the CIBC dividend, DOES NOT consider it as cash advance.

update note:
When you buy in person, the store might not group the ticket as 'lottery' for the CC company, so it might still be consider purchase.

Inside MBNA account agreement

Quote:
"Cash Advance" means the use of your Account for a loan obtained:
...
3. to buy "Cash Equivalents" (..., bets, lottery tickets, casino gaming chips...) with your card
...

check with ur cc company guys

In BC, retailers cannot write down your driver's license number or any personal ID # when you use a credit card to make a purchase. They can only look at the ID to verify the name matches your face.

Also after a transaction the credit card slip should only contain the first and last 4 digits of your credit card. The middle 8 numbers should show XXXX XXXX. Some old machines still print out all the numbers, you can scratch it out before signing it if you are paranoid something will happen.

Should read this story, if you want to talk about fraud.
Store owner and relatives tried to defraud the original winners of their huge jackpot. Thankfully the OLG decided to investigate.

I was told by a lotto retailer - I think it was that magazine store on Broadway & Granville - that I couldn't purchase tickets with a CC, only Interac or cash.
