I know what a flex pass is, just didn't know that u can park on weekends for free using it. Say if I have 1 previous ticket that I didn't pay yet, would I hv to pay it off first before I can apply for a flex pass? Cause they need my plate # right?

Flex Pass is a UBC parking pass that allows you to access to your specified parkade(s) on a month/term/year basis. Techincally, it is not FREE for Flex Pass users to park in the weekends, because they have already pay it.

Carrying a FlexPass doesn't mean you can park on those B/C-lots, it only allows you to park at the 4 parkades at UBC. You will still get a ticket if you have a flexpass and didn't pay at B/C lots.

Yes, you have to pay off all your exsisting violation payments [of your current plate ] before you can register for flexpass.

Not free but you can try renting out a lot from those private residence around UBC. I rented mine for 40 bucks a month near the village, gated underground and bike 2 minutes to classes. They're not abundant but come up from time to time on craigslist around $30-60

Plus you don't have to worry about random people dinging your car if you ride a nice one.

rofl

after 3 pages and there is still no clear answers

if you are so poor that u cannot afford to park at ubc then scan one of the b-lot parking tickets, photoshop the date, and reprint it on receipt paper. But since this takes more than 2 brain cells to do, i doubt RS can do it

UBC/SFU parking is expensive but not that bad compared to downtown. Try $350 a month parking at Shaw Tower.

If the flex pass is $400+hst+parking tax, it's not TOO bad. SFU Westmall reserved is $530 (include all taxes).

Why don't you compare it to Tokyo then I bet its more expensive there.. point is it's students that are paying for parking at sfu/ubc while more affluent people are paying for parking in DT which is a financial district. Different places different people.

Yea... Professors are not affluent people right? What about other UBC employees?
I don't knoe about UBC, but there's no price discrimination between staff and students. edit: No price difference between SFU staff and students.

My point is, parking is priced accordingly. If everyone is able to afford parking what do you think id going to happen? Flooded lots. Students have a upass for a reason. If you argue that you live too far, then that's too bad. Use the "living in Mission" savings to pay for the parking pass. Or move closer.

If you can afford the car, you also have to be responsible for related costs associated with owning a car.

Not sure but I heard teachers or employees of UBC get their parking passes for $80 /semester. Which is way cheaper than students. I remember the b-lots used to be $5 then it raised to $5.50 and now $6.

Im sorry, but you heard wrong. Its $864 a year, but the perk is that they can park at all parkades.

B-lot is the outdoor one near Starbucks right? When I started post-secondary in 2004, I think it was only $4.

Raises every year is due to our crazy parking tax of 21%. It still doesn't make sense to me that we have to pay HST on parking tax.

As for UBC employees, I wouldn't know because I am not a student and don't work at UBC. I only have information about SFU.

Parking at b-lots is cheap but sucks if u hv class at like buchanan or the anthro-sociolgy building. Parking on north west marine is all taken up so quick. Long walk (15 mins) if u park at b-lots by forestry building walking to buchanan.

Exactly, you get the point now right? (or I guess, Gee.Tee.Ar) If all UBC parking is affordable (or free), that means either:
1. Build more UBC parking lots and have less space for classroom and lab buildings
2. People who are willing to pay will have to fight or camp for parking stalls
3. Traffic is going to be more of a nightmare

Side note:
4. This also go against the environmental policies that people are trying to advocate
5. The UPass system might collapse due to less ridership

Parking rates are only going to go up. As for the free parking argument, it's your choice to pay or not depending on your risk aversion. Personally, I pay about 75% of the time when I study at UBC.

No, There is ONE place that you can park for FREE at UBC without getting booked by UBC parking services.

Someone just posted it up.

It used to be $4.50 during my first year, and they are going to raise it to $7.00 by this summer. Good Luck.

Sep 2007 = $4.50.

And then they raised it up to $5.00 in May 2008.

Then $5.50? in May 2009.

$6 by May 2010.

You can see the trend here. [$6.50 is more likely by this summer, I guess ]

I don't care about how much does it cost now.

I'll try to look for my ticket. I got it at 9pm, behind ICICS at the reserved lot.

When I don't pay it's usually around 8pm at the metered lot in front of the "x-men" building near Irving. Sometimes I feel like getting some studying done at UBC because it's closer to my house.

I had 10 tickets before my car was towed, the total bill came up to 4 bills ($30/ tix + towing fees, they didn't charge me 60 for each tix even though its suppose to be an addition 30 bucks or so after like 2 weeks or something).

As for the guy ticketing, ticketing goes on all the way til around 9 pm, i was ticketed once at around 9 20 pm on a weekday.

There are still some tricks to get free parking around ubc:
1) gift credit cards from 7 11 works time to time (NOT EVERYTIME) at the parkades. The one that worked the most often is North parkade. My gift card doesnt have cash and it still works (Last yr gift cards from Richmond center and Oakridge worked, not sure anymore cuz i threw them away during the summer)
2) the apartment parking lot by west parkade is free after around 2 pm, cuz thats when the guy checks, he doesnt check after that
3) village parking lot is free after 1-2pm same reason as above. they ticketing guy only check these parking lots twice
4) L parking lot by west parkade is a safe bet to park for a few hours (i made my self one of those L passes with a fuking black marker and white business card and i didn't get caught for one whole semester)

BTW, you dont have to pay the tickets issued by UBC UNLESS you registered a flexpass under your name. In that case, if you get a ticket, you have to pay or they will not let you graduate since the car is registered under your name as a student. If you do not have a flexpass, then dont have to pay since ubc parking service is independent and they dont bother taking you to court

Hope this helped

Aren't u afraid they can track u down for using those giftcards from Rc and oakridge? Cause the parking lot (north etc) have cameras. U still have to pay ubc even if u dunt have a flex pass because u get towed on ur 3rd ticket. This is why u had to pay $400 in the end.
If it was close to ur last year then u wudnt have to pay but if u continue to park at ubc ilegally, u shud pay the ticket .so a blank giftcard works for the parking lots when u leave? Have u tried using it at the B-lots where it is $6 for a whole day? Same machine I'm guessing.
