Honda gave us a preview of its 2012 Civic at this year's Detroit Auto Show, and while the car we saw on stage was technically a "concept," we expect the production car to look very similar, albeit with more conventional wheels, headlamps, and, you know, an interior. Instead of just showing one Civic, Honda brought out both a sedan and Si coupe concept, and now our friends at Temple of VTEC have reportedly confirmed that a new 2.4-liter mill is on deck for the sportiest of Civics.

Known internally as "K24," the 2.4-liter engine slated for Civic Si use will be very similar to the powerplant currently used in the Acura TSX. No official power numbers have been divulged, but this engine currently makes 201 horsepower in the TSX, so we'll bet that Civic Si output will be somewhere between 200 and 210 hp. That isn't a huge increase over the 197 hp currently available from the Si's 2.0-liter four, but the 2.4-liter engine should prove to be a bit torquier. Look for something along the lines of 170 pound-feet in the 2012 model, whereas the current car only produces 139 lb-ft of twist.

Official data will be revealed closer to the Civic family's launch later this year. And while these new Si numbers aren't leaps and bounds better than what's currently available, the easily flickable driving dynamics and rev-happy power should still make it an engaging steer.

^ yes k24 is used in many cars

Acura
tsx
Rdx (2.3 turbo very similar)

Honda
CR-v
Accord

k series engine is awesome. But I must say the best k series honda is Felix's Fit :D

dinamix 02-02-2011 02:37 PM

looking good
wonder if this car will be faster than a DC2R..probably the same cause it's heavier.

cococly 02-02-2011 03:07 PM

I think this new Si coupe looks great.

I am also creating this thread to see if new Honda is still a popular subject among us. :)

TypeRNammer 02-02-2011 03:10 PM

Damn, it pulled a EP3

Increase displacement, lower the red line ridiculously.

Lol that looks more like a butt lift than a redesign. And the rear wheel still looks disproportionate to the car in true honda fashion.

rear is as ugly as the new STi. 2.4L and 200hp. Honda is so boring now.

vitaminG 02-02-2011 04:50 PM

I was really hoping to see the 2.3 turbo in the civic SI, that wouldve been my next car.

All of its competitors are going turbo DI, i realize HP isnt everything but it still has to remain competitive.

Ford focus ST 247 HP
Mazdaspeed 3 263
VW GTI 200 hp but way more/broader torque
2009 cobalt SS turbo 260 hp (would love to see that motor in a Cruze)
lacer ralliart 237hp

Euro7r 02-02-2011 05:32 PM

Things just seem to be doing downhill with Honda and Acura. Once a upon a time, there was the Nsx, Integra, Prelude, Rsx, S2k. Now.........

cococly 02-02-2011 05:45 PM

To be honest, I was thinking that Honda might bring its Turbo I-4 from the RDX into the Si. It could bring the Si closer with the competition in this "horsepower" race.

that's a big engine for a car that's suppose to get you from point A to B in the most fuel efficient manner. after taking into account the power output of a ITR with over 100+hp/litre, one has to wonder why Honda is no longer producing high output small displacement engines that made them popular with the tuner crowd.
