Mobilicity vs. Wind
 

I did a quick search didn't find what exactly i need, i have the mobilicty 44.80 unlimited data north american etc. plan. Service for mobilicity isn't the best and now wind has the same plan so im wondering how the service is with wind.

The industry speculation is that Wind's going to get bought up soon by one of the big three (my money is on Telus given their sub brand sucks compared to the others and they've just posted huge profits). If I were you I would give it about 4 - 6 months and see if/how that pans out before hopping ships if you're considering any kind of contract.

They won't get bought up if the government changes legislation to allow Wind to operate here. Orascom has more money than Rogers, Bell and Telus combined.

Yeah but if the legislation doesn't change and continues to make things difficult for smaller telecoms they'll get eaten up by the larger ones just like the others who have tried it have. That's why I said, wait and see how things go in the next 4-6 months.

I'd be really surprised if the government DON'T change their legislation to allow foreign ownership to invest into the telecom industry. It would shine a VERY negative light on the Canadian government from the perspective of foreign investors.

First you allow them to apply, then Industry Canada allows them to operate now you have some BS from the Supreme Court of Canada that prohibits them from operating. It speaks volumes about the high risk and turmoil of investing here from the perspective of foreign investors. If the government won't give the green light for WIND to operate. It will make the Canadian government look like a joke.

I don't think it was the Supreme court that issued the ruling. And they weren't wrong with their ruling, they only followed the laws which are outdated.
I think the government will probably change it to allow the competition they wanted.

Back to the OP, what is the 44.80 plan? the $40 plan with tax? If it is, I don't think Wind is offering that plan anymore.

It was Public Mobile and Telus that went to the Supreme Court of Canada to file a complaint regarding this manner. So yes, it was the Federal court that overturn Industry Canada's decision to allow Wind Mobile to operate here. But you're right, it ultimately comes down to the decision of the Harper government to allow the survival of Wind Mobile, one that could turn out ridiculously embarrassing, if they don't side with WIND.

And this is why we're stuck with overpriced and underserviced telecom providers. While Telus buying WIND sounds completely reasonable financially, technically they would be running two networks on different frequencies will evidently result in the new network getting shut down.

But given the circumstances regarding foreign investment in Canada recently, I'd bet my money on the Government somehow letting Wind stay the way it is. The opposite would destroy any credibility Canada has left on the international stage.

actually i don't think courts said Wind isn't allowed to operate... they said Harper had no right to make that decision, the way he did, so his decision is void

if anything Shaw might make a move... Its been rumoured that Shaw wants in on the wireless network... this could be their chance and since most of the network is put and gone national, Shaw really has little to do.. just make some minor improvements and the can really compete with Robellus..

Shaw is making huge moves toward wireless (they're poised to launch their own network, in fact it was supposed to happen in the fall but there was some sort of delay, at least out west, I don't follow the east coast stuff as closely). It wouldn't be surprising if they made a move on either mobilicity or wind, given how difficult the government is making it for smaller providers to move into the telecom industry. But I don't know how liquid they are or if they're in a buying position, I don't think they've posted their numbers yet for last year.

It's not a question of "might", it is a question of when they will formally announce it.

wind has more, they launched nation wide sooner then Mobi did...

shaw should jsut buy out both Wind and Mobi, then their coverage is would better!


If shaw does buy out either one, i hope they dont just milk us like the Big3... im not worried about contracts, as shaw has never had this in their services, so its not likely that will happen..

If I heard right, Shaw delayed their move because of a lack of capital at the time. Their plans to get into the wireless market still stand, though. Could possibly be via a buyout of one of the two startups... but that would be a wait and see approach.

As far as Shaw not milking us like Robellus... good luck with that. They're a big corporation who are in it to earn money, just like the other three. The best thing for competition is if Wind and Mobilicity survive and thrive on their own.

wind has better/faster data. mobi data cuts out most of the time (at least it was like that 2 months ago when I was with mobi), but mobi had clearer voice quality. Wind has the stupid half duplex issue. So when the other person talks and then you start talking, you cant hear the other person. lol

Wind has been good to me. Only problem is when I send my friend a text or whatsapp message, he doesn't get the message until 10 minutes later.
Theres also a delay getting messages from them. Usually comes in waves.
Anybody else have this problem?

I decided to be a bit of a lamb and try Wind yesterday. Purchased the phone, $40 unlimited everything plan, and proceeded to drive around the GVRD to see if I had good reception, WIND HOME or WIND AWAY while doing so.

Tested inside a couple of buildings. Found Port Moody reception to go on WIND AWAY. Burnaby/Vancouver, reception was strong at all times outdoors. Haven't tested data speeds yet, but will test drive through Richmond, possibly North Vancouver tonight.

Made a couple of test phone calls, no duplexing issues as I've read previously. Calls were clear, and none failed while outdoors/in a house. Going to test from the basement of my house later, as well.

^ Sending and receiving, messages arrive within 5 seconds to my Rogers cell. Messages sent from my Rogers cell to the Wind handset arrived even faster, within 2 seconds.

Voice issues, none as yet, reception, the only poor area noted thus far for outside was Port Moody near Burnaby Mountain. Indoors, haven't been inside any malls/buildings aside from my work (concrete walls, auto repair shop) and I get about 3 bars inside/against two concrete walls.

Haven't tested the data speeds yet, since I'm using the 5230, and I believe I need to download something from the OVI store in order to tether. As far as data/browsing/gps on the phone, all are very quick, though.

mobilicity works fine for me, i live in delta and go to school in burnaby and i usually have full bars everywhere.

another cool thing is data tethering is included/unlimited, so right now im on the bus on my macbook lol, bluetooth internet FTW its only like 70kb/s dl speed 30 kb/s up (speedtest.net)

That's horrible!

im using a 50$ sony Ericsson phone, i dont think it gets 3g signal...

its about 1/3 the speed of my telus iphone.
