Expiring Passport

So I realized today that my passport is expiring in mid-April. I was going to renew it this week, however I will be traveling to Denver this weekend for work (for 5 nights), so I will have to put off the renewal process until I come back.

Does anyone know if I will encounter any problems at US Customs at the airport since I have approximately 6-7 weeks left on the validity of my passport?

Checked passport Canada's website but did not come across anything.

Don't think it would be a problem. It hasn't expired yet. No reaseon not to accept it. Even if it was expired driving there was still be acceptable. Drove there few months ago with an expired one they let me. Not to sure about airports tho. You should be fine.

Get Nexus. Not having to deal with US customs is awesome. If you use it for work, do a rush renewal and charge it to your company

Your passport will be good to enter/leave the US even when expired, my GF called both US and Canadian customs and confirmed this since she had an expired passport and needed to cross the border. US and Canada have a very good relationship and will honor an expired passport.

The problem is traveling by air. The airline may not honor your expired passport and refuse to let you on the plane.

You're technically not suppose to fly with your passport if you only have 6 month left before the expiration date.

No issue for the US. I've flown to the UK with about 2 weeks left on my passport and was only reminded my passport was going to expiry but yes, the general rule is 6 months because some countries can deny you entry but most won't issue you an visa so you'll know you can't travel anyways.

That's the one thing I'm worried about.

Unfortunately an express rush on passports still takes 5-6 business days and they can't make any guarantees that I would have it back before the weekend.

My fault I forgot to renew it, but I guess I'll just hope for the best! My boss will probably destroy me if I get rejected at customs haha

Thanks for the responses.

You can get a rush passport in 72 hours, depending on how much you're willing to pay. Will your boss accept the extra cost as an expense? My sister had to do this last time we went down south on short notice and I think it was an extra $100 or something.

You can get a passport renewed in 24hrs, my GF just did it since she had to travel by air and wasn't willing to push her luck as she had been when crossing by car. Cost ~$100.

If you have a return ticket, it should be ok. If you didn't have a return - they might be worried you're just going to stick around after it expires. Even then tho - it's pretty easy to renew a passport even while you're in the states. It's different for countries where Canada doesn't have as big a presence.

is it within the law for them to allow you to cross the border driving with an expired passport, or is this something customs is very lenient on?

At the airport there's 3 machines that scan your eyes. After that you are on your way. I've gotten pulled aside once in 30-40 trips to the states.

Driving across the border, you just present your Nexus card to the customs agent. They might ask you a question or two but it's should be smooth sailing!

Under normal circumstances, you can only do an URGENT SERVICE (can be done within the hour if you go to the downtown office) if and only if you have proof of travel.
This will include (but not limited to):

- A letter from a hospital requesting the presence of the applicant
- Travel itinerary

As others have stated above this will cost you quite a bit more of money, but if you need it ASAP it is an option for you.
Keep in mind though you still need to fill out the normal paperwork.

I do realize that Passport Canada does urgent service, however my work will not be paying for the renewal, so I don't really want to spend an extra $100 or so on top of the $80.

I think I'll take the chance since it is the US, and I have a return ticket already purchased for my five day stay. If it was any other country, I would def look into a rush service.

I don't know, yet when my GF did speak with both US and Canada customs they said it was not a big deal. They did warn that companies do not have to accept expired ID, thus an airline might not let you fly even if customs lets you pass.

If you're crossing by vehicle everyone in the vehicle must have a Nexus card.

scary thought though, they might let you drive through the border, but customs on the other side might not let you back!

offtopic: does anyone have an enhanced drivers license? how long did it take you to get yours? i get different answers from icbc reps. some say 4-6 weeks, some say just 2.

I was told this too at Bellingham Airport, as I had 8 months left and they just let me know as a courtesy.

Canada customs will always let you back in even with an expired passport - you might get delayed at customs to run some checks, yet you'll get back in. Its the airline that might not let you on the flight back to Canada.
