when close to 16million Canadians fly to the US every year 16mill x $5.50 is a lot, and as stated above they have to get their money from somewhere especially since there trillions of dollars in debt
The fuck is this shit, did Obama start hanging out with Snoop Dogg and learn how to hustle or something? If anyone; any Prime Minister, Dictator, President thinks they can just DECIDE they want our money, and take it without reason, they are a fucking clown, that needs to get into their clown car and go drive off a motherfucking golden gate bridge.
If congress decides they all want to do this, we could throw it right back in their star spangled fucking faces. I can almost tell you that if this proposal goes through, it won't stop there - there will be a slow steady creep in fee's. If the cow gives milk....keep on milking it right? If Canada stands for this, and gives this an inch - and let's not forget which Government we are talking about here - they will rip out a fucking green mile to go with it. Ohhh, but NAFTA doesn't say we're not allowed to do this - shut the fuck up you asshat. We're your goddamn neighbors

When I read these kinds of articles, I always find it odd that the politician becomes a kind of scapegoat for it: "obama proposes". What actually happened is it was presented to Congress as part of his 2011 preliminary budget, a budget which had a ridiculous sized staff working on. Certainly, we can assume that he did sign off on the larger more important parts, but is it necessary to assume that he specifically went out of his way to say "hey, you know how Canadians fly in free here? How about we charge them for getting in, we could probably get a couple mil from that, right?".
Let's be honest. You shouldn't exclusively blame the head of an organization for a recommendation made by a committee. Make note, absolutely. Place single-handed blame? All that's gonna do is keep the same people who recommended the decision in place while removing the figurehead that had nothing to do with it other than effectively signing it in. ^ that's some good logic right there... if you're a farmer.
there's something called equilibrium. of course you cant keep upping the rates, less people would go to the states which means less GDP injection.. a reverse effect of their intentions.
ill put this back into farmers logic for you, but promise not to delete this post: if you milk the cow too much, it wont be able to feed its calves, and you'll be out of business in the future. the trick is to milk it just enough to make your ends meet. because of the diminishing marginal returns, there's some magic number where you can tax the shit out of canadian tourists but not lose too much money from tourist dollars. hence, equilibrium. you're certified in common sense now, thank button below.

Yeah I understand the concept; and that justifies an entrance fee to Canadians? If you want my thanks, you'll need to explain a legitimate reason as well lol. btw please do not instigate in VOT, there's no need to be condescending in your post.
I think everybody understands the President is just a 'face' to a much larger governing body, and it's not like Obama himself is out to get Canadians - but that face has the power to veto, and that face also shouldn't be glossing over any policy that effects other Countries without some consideration, especially when it's a neighboring ally like us - so in a way he is perpetrating this proposal as well.

When I read these types of complaints from canadians, it makes me wonder about perspective. what if we taxed all chinese tourists and put the money into making our transportation infrastructure (primarily streets and highways) more efficient? would you argue against a $5 fee from all chinese tourists if it meant that you could get to places faster and experience less traffic congestion?
This sucks if it only applies to canadians. They should make it more fair and charge everyone that enters by air or sea. I could inderstand that. Posted via RS Mobile

In a way it's happened before, read up on the Chinese Head Tax. It may not be exactly like the scenario you paint, but it'll give you perspective and outcomes.

Okay for a double thanks Ill explain why. Canada, mexico, and some caribbean places have previously been exempt from these fees. This means, if you live in any other country, you have to pay the fee.
Basically, america is like a nightclub, and if youre from north america, you don't have to pay cover. if youre from anywhere else, covers $5.50. ok club america owes a lot of money cause it kept lending money to people to buy houses. now club america needs to make money or else its going to be bought out completely by china nightclub enterprises. so club america goes "hey canada, you're my best customer, i cant let you in my club for free anymore" then club canada says

Hahah but we haven't said anything to it yet, it's not even policy yet, so you can't post that pic. Look, it's kind of hard to follow your analogy, but if you honestly believe that's a Legitimate reason, you're only playing devils advocate and aren't worth discussing this with.

If we are not able to ask skeptical questions, to interrogate those who tell us that something is true; to be skeptical of those in authority, then we're up for grabs..
-Carl Sagan
because it has no choice, since club america sells the cheapest drinks by the bar and has the hottest chicks.
that is the reason why obama is cutting the slack for canadians. we had a privilege, now he's taking it away.
Canada supplies club America a big chunk of it's party supplies, and if it had any balls it would say "Fuck you club America, I can sell my shit to Club China instead"

you don't have to capitalize 'legitimate', we know it's a fancy word.
i just want to confirm one thing: you're suggesting that obama's simply lifting the fee exemptions on canadian for fun?
btw in the world of naive people, the devils advocate is king.
what about the nafta? what the hell are you talking about?
the US is in a big fucking deficit and china basically owns them. give them a break. they charge nothing when times are good, but when times are rough they start nickle and diming for everything, how does this not make sense? our economy rides on theirs, so if they need $100 mil injected into their gdp then that shouldnt be a problem
anyways, to offset the extra $5 in coin you spend to fly to the US, fly down there with an empty suitcase and old clothes, shopping spree then go have fun doing your vacation, then fly back with +$1000 savings in new clothes and products. problem, canada?
If you're going down to the states, you're already spending money into their economy. Adding a 5$ surcharge is just a slap in the face. And I guess it's alright with you that we help out an economy that got a few people rich as fuck while everyone else went bankrupt. Let's dig them out of their financial hole, 5$ at a time.

yeah but america is our best customer, we need them like china needs america. if we flipped a double bird to the south, we'll have a huge drop in foreign investments. for example, futureshop and bestbuy are american companies and visions is canadian.
you think we'd be better off with visions? honestly.. look at how they run their stores. but anyways, lets pretend for a minute that it was true. visions, as a MONOPOLY, would skyrocket their prices.
also, we'd have to buy all our shit direct from china, who'd sell it to us for a higher price, since america (with more buying power = economies of scale = cheaper prices) is out of the picture
lastly, imagine the logistics of goods/services right now. they're conducted across the border. that's cause, for vancouver, it's logistically feasible to trade goods/services with washington, than to trade with canada's homebase ontario, or our alternative china
therefore, we have to give a little to receive a little with the US. we need them, just like they need china.

they;re not adding, theyre lifting the $5 exemption that they've been charging to other countries. $5 at a time for a country we depend on, think about it. actually, enroll yourself in an economics course then come back and talk shit

Listen dipshit, we're talking about a dick move here by the US. I don't give a fuck about the economics of a dick move. And 5$ to add 100 milliion in revenue to a 1 trillion deficit is fuck all. Not like this will be helping their economy much, the money is going to their shitty Homeland Security Department. We all know what a good job they do!
enroll yourself in an economics course then come back and talk shit
This thread has been less about us discussing US economic policy as it pertains to Canadians entering the states and more about you trying to flex your mental muscles.
Yes, we see that you've been to business school. You've got it in your sig. Stop trying to show off.

We're not impressed, BNR
you're right, there's definitely nothing related to economics at all. this is a matter of the US being dicks to canadians. we should muster our armed forces to wear pink and parade around the border or do a flash mob rally against political bullying
i dont care if you're impressed, but i feel like a god in this thread. just look at what's happening: people get thanked for stupid videos, strategic economic policies labeled as dick moves and bullying, selective reading which supports emotional reactions, points assigned for slightly mean posts directed at mods. nobody's trying to discern the logic behind a decision that a panel of experts constructed, yet the people that do (myself) are being told they're not worthy of a discussion.

Its the way that you're going about it that just comes off as obnoxious. The sad thing is that I agree entirely with you. You just come off like a douche in making said point.
