I’ve just spent an engaging half-hour in the company of Gayu Eusegi, Mitsubishi’s global product director.

Mostly we talked about the new Global Small Concept, which will be built in Thailand and sized somewhere between a Toyota Aygo and the Colt supermini. It’ll go on UK sale in 2012, effectively replacing the Colt in the line-up.

But also he told me some news, which seemed to surprise a few Mitsubishi Europe bods as much as it did me.

The Lancer Evolution X, Eusegi told me, will be the last Evo. “There is still a demand [for the car],” he said, “but we must stop.” Eyebrow up.

“Our influence now is EV technology,” Eusegi said, adding that the decision was a “policy change”.

It seems Mitsubishi, which is going to introduce eight full electric or hybrid cars by 2015, has decided its image is about lowering CO2, not making lurid replicas of rally cars that don’t go top-level rallying any more.

Eusegi said that customers would find it “easier to understand” what Mitsubishi was about if it was no longer in this motorsport-inspired market.

He seemed to put the rumoured diesel hybrid Evo replacement to bed, too. So the X will be the last Evolution model? “Yes. Maybe the world can change, and maybe someday we can do a motor race by electric vehicles,” said Eusegi. “Maybe then we can enter the market again.”
Until then, prepare yourselves for the end of an era.

I'm sure the decision was because of the stockholders.

reza 03-01-2011 10:21 PM

oh ffs
they spend all that time and money on r&d for the 10 then kill it off?

!Shuya80 03-01-2011 10:23 PM

^^ think what they meant was that there will not be an evo xi+ and that the evo x will be the last evo.

ImpactZ 03-01-2011 10:23 PM

stockholders dont give a shit about the evo

Culverin 03-01-2011 10:25 PM

sunk cost bro

I wonder if they'll have an EV racing league come in eventually. Isn't it because of the drive and competition from racing that teams are determined to build their best engines?

What are you guys' thoughts?

tofu1413 03-01-2011 10:29 PM

i think the Lancer Evo is the only car in mitsu's current line up that saves it from the image of brand suck-itude.

exhil 03-01-2011 10:30 PM

man....:(

Mitsubushi has more important things to do..like making pens and household vaccums.

tofu1413 03-01-2011 10:35 PM

then subaru would follow suit and pull the plug on the STi/ wrxes. they dont compete in rallying either.

That is a good question, but I think this would only mean more sales for the STI. I mean, Mitsubishi acknowledges that there is still demand, but they need to focus their resource else where. Then again, does this mean that the STI will suck after this since it does not have a direct competitor?

don't forget erasers

man this is fucking sad. end of an era indeed. a great era at that

tofu1413 03-01-2011 10:49 PM

might get even more sloppier...

remember, fuji industries also has a say to mitsu too apparently (i remember reading it somewhere a while back..)

toyota also owning fuji... maybe they'll cut the sti from product line too... or maybe you're right. keep the sti so it'll be the only one on the market as a rally inspired turbo rocket.. guaranteed sales. we'll have to wait and see what the future has in store.

kyoshiro 03-01-2011 10:49 PM

Mitsubishi Motors is actually seperate from the pencil /etc, theyre just under the same "branding" kinda thing. but yeah... shitty day, must cry myself to sleep with the Evo gone.

tofu1413 03-01-2011 10:50 PM

with the evo gone.. the wrx sti is... :alone:
