if your taxes are pretty straight forward, i personally suggest using ufile. its pretty straight forward and you can match your quote with what ufile says.

Did my taxes by myself with TurboTax this year. Getting back 1.6k

In the off chance that I majorly fucked up, would they just automatically fix it for you and give you your actual return?

depending on the information available to CRA at the time of your filing, corrections MAY be made during the assessment. but this really depends on what is wrong to begin with. Not everything will be caught right away, so i would not rely on this.

our tax system is based on self assessment. that means what whatever you file it as, CRA takes it as it is first, and then can come back to review it in depth at a later time. so it may very well be that you will get your 1.6k back as you filed it, and then half a year later get reassessed and asked to pay back X amount because of some error you made or something you left out.

Looking for some help/advice here.

I just got my T4 (from my previos employer) in the mail and it's pretty off from my last pay stub ~ about $8k higher in gross income. I would usually call up payroll, but basically the company went under and is no longer in business. I left multiple voice mail to the general inquiry # on the company's website, but no call backs. Now it says the voicemail box is full...

I don't really think its fair to pay taxes on money I never earned... Is this something to bring up with the CRA? What would they do? I still have my last pay stub in hand which shows my ytd gross income if that helps

When I calculated my income tax it looked like it was only going to be $8x.xx but I end up getting about $7xx.xx. Did I do something wrong and they fixed it? Or did they do something wrong lol. Need to check the actual mail though was just looking at my bank account.

i heard a rumor if you send in your tax returns, unfilled, they will do it for you since there is no actual requirement stated saying you have to send them in complete. they have staff that will fill it out for you.

...lol has anyone tried this?

assuming your taxes are simple and not a lot of money is at risk (errors).... wouldn't this be worth trying out? hahaha

I've never heard of that happening. Its the onus on the taxpayer to file a tax return every year regardless or not if you have income for that year.

seriously...? staff to fill out your returns for you...?

if you have taxes to pay, you have to file a return.

if you choose not to fill out your return, go ahead. best case scenario, that is exactly what they would do: send it back to you. Worst case scenario? Try it and find out. Wouldn't want to spoil it for you.

better yet, don't file for a couple years. see how long you can get away with it

i've made two small mistakes over the past two returns and they've fixed it accordingly each time, which actually gave me an extra couple hundred dollars

$7K coming back, i could have been more 'aggressive' but decided i wouldn't as i don't want to get audited (i am doing nothing wrong, but am aggressive in my reading/interpretation of the ITA)

they can do that for simple things, dividend tax credits, foreign tax credits, EI/CPP payments (although they didn't for me, worth $2K one year, which annoyed me) - i believe they have your T4's, T5's, etc. so automatically fill in your 'simple' bits correctly before you even do anything

I worked at CRA for a few years from grade 11 through to my second year of university… and I’ve seen/received some weird shit in the mail in terms of people’s tax returns.

Funny enough, a lot of the time if you submit a blank T1 with all of the supporting documents, often it is filled out for you. What happens here is usually up to the discretion of the person who puts it together… I’ve received letters from people saying they can’t afford to have them done by an accountant or people simply saying that it’s too complicated for them to fill out and to have at em… The outcome? Well, that varies too. Sometimes your tax return is simply filed, although I would say most often your tax return will be stamped as ‘penalty’ and you won’t receive the full amount you’re entitled to.

The best tax returns are tax returns where people will literally put hundreds of staples and glue their correspondence documents together. Most entry level people working in O of A (It’s a department of people who literally just put your tax returns in the appropriate order, O of A, order of attachments, go figure) have to remove and sort all of your documentation. There’s nothing like duct tape, staples and glue to start your day

^Mine took 9 business days. I went with E-File instead of mailing it back and it really is a lot quicker. The strange thing was that I could have sworn that I signed up for direct deposit for this return and future ones but I still got the cheque in the mail instead..

i signed up for direct deposit as well but got a warning saying that this return may still come in a cheque. i guess it takes "one cycle" to get the direct deposit rolling.
