We all hate towing companies, but sometimes you can't do without them.

Saw this on Autoblog:

There's a reason tow truck drivers charge so much money for their talents. Extricating a vehicle from a sticky situation is an art that requires more skill than simply knowing where to hook the cables and what lever to pull. If you aren't extremely careful, you can easily turn a bad situation worse just by applying too much force in the wrong area at the wrong time. Need proof? Have a look at the video after the jump. The clip shows a poor GMC Sierra capsized on a frozen lake and the ensuing attempt to get it back on its feet.

Rather than enlist the assistance of a qualified tow truck operator, the helpful hands on scene apparently decided to take matters into their own hands with a little boost from a piece of heavy equipment. Unfortunately, the truck had other ideas. Hit the jump to see what happens for yourself. Just be warned, there's a lot of swearing on the video that's completely NSFW.

There was a story recently of a woman who had her arm cutoff cause the tow cable snapped. You should really not tow your own car unless you have the proper equipment.

In high school, my buddies ripped the rear axle completely off a car they tried to tow out of a snow bank. LOL it was hilarious, yet expensive.

Or the lesson is about using the closest mount point to the direction where you are trying to tow? Instead of using the winch which is on the other end of your truck?

It should be renamed Why you shouldn't try to town your own car, if you are not that clear of the mechanics of towing.

MindBomber 03-04-2011 04:05 PM

Towing those cars wouldn't be a challenge for someone who isn't a complete idiot, anyone capable of graduating from 10th grade could probably do it.

white_guilt 03-04-2011 04:14 PM

meh, with some armor all and elbow grease, it'll buff right out.

Jayhall 03-04-2011 04:17 PM

Ive seen a truck get flipped right side up with seemingly no effort at all. Just got to know what your doing

Because they were trying to turn it right side up before they dragged it on its roof out of the lake.
