Alaskan King Crab

I'm not 100% sure but someone mentioned that right now is King Crab season again! ...

So is now a good time to feast on some Garlic Sauteed Crab at a Chinese restaurant?

Anybody recommend a good place to enjoy it???

2 years ago I went to some small restaurant on Kingsway that was advertising $8.88/lb but the crab was not meaty at all... so I'll probably have to un-ghetto myself for some truly amazing crab this time around hehe...

I went to Lucky Tao on Alexandra Rd in Richmond.
Service sucked ass, but the crab was cooked perfectly.
We didnt feel scammed either.
14lbs looked like 14lbs.. unlike at other places.

But yeah, service sucked. Lol.

It is King Crab season. (Apparently it is in season twice a year.)

I had a huge 13 lb one at my gf's place made by her parents. They hacked it up alive, steamed it, cut the shells open and poured tons of chopped garlic all over the inside meat. Awesome.

The juices were all saved up and used to make noodles.

King crab congee was good too.

This one was just normal colored, though. Last year's had a blue shell and the flavor was magical.

Looking forward out for king crab on my birthday soon.

Flip open the chinese newspaper....to the restaurant section,
and you'll be able to find at least 25+ restaurant advertising
about the Alaskan King Crab. The season price is anywhere
from $10.xx to $16.xx / lb lately. You'll need to be getting a
minimum of 8lb. Any smaller than that, there won't be much meat.

Go with a group of friend or family. At least 5-6 people.

Try one of their "packaged deals" It's usually around $150-200,
and you get the king crab done in 3 ways, along with 2-4 other
dishes, along with the soup.

If you can't decide which restaurant to go to, try Sun Sui Wah,
heard they were the pioneer with live crabs.

I find that u really have to go up to at least 12-13 pounds to get some real meat. Anything less u'r just paying for the shell.

They had a $13.80/lb special, pretty decent and not too many people know about it yet. A new Chinese seafood restaurant in Burnaby:

No... nobody said Crybaby James.

I went with a bunch of coworkers a couple weeks ago at Excelsior restaurant in Richmond (same complex as Staples on No. 3 road). It was GOOOOOOD,

My goto place for King Crab...and don't laugh is Congee Noodle House on Broadway at Main. They do an amazing job, I kid you not! IMHO it beats Sun Sui Wah and Kirin easily. The only downside is that its a cash only restaurant which when it comes to the cost of a King Crab meal might require some planning. I was just there last week, the crabs were $13.80/lb and done 3 ways. Enjoy!

I went to Kirin Starlight.

Pretty decent...large portions, always good and polite service, had it done 3 ways, garlic, some deep fried spicy kind, as well as used the head shell to bake a Portuguese creamy style rice.

All in all, pricey, but good.

HonestTea 03-15-2011 02:53 AM

Went to Always Seafood Restaurant on Main Street, we had Alaska King Crab 3 ways, $9/lbs and ours was about 12 lbs. Had ours done 3 ways, King crab legs in garlic, deep fried with egg yoke and fried rice.

The place was pretty expensive, bill came to about $250 for 4 people + 2 other dishes

SecludedGirl 03-15-2011 12:42 PM

I recently had king crab at Sun Sui Wah, and it was also done 3 ways. Absolutely delicious! Steamed with garlic, deep fried and portuguese fried rice. Servers were very courteous and prompt. I definitely want to revisit again before the season is over! :)

if you need some planning to get cash for a king crab dinner, you shouldn't even consider eating out!

Is carrying only 2-300 bucks too tough for you?

TRDood 03-15-2011 10:16 PM

Deer Garden in Coquitlam - done 4 ways
I always see all other restaurants only doing it 3 ways.

I think the flavours can be:
garlic, chinese wine, ginger/onion (legs) x2
curry, salt and pepper (fried body) x1
fried rice with portugeese sauce (shell/head) x1

ed99 03-15-2011 10:39 PM

Just went over the weekend in a Chinese Seafood Restaurant located by Garden City and Alderbridge. Crab was huge at 14lbs. The crab had good meat and it was cook to perfection. We had it cooked 4 ways and it is such a good deal right now to go. Planning to go again soon.

Whoa. Can you describe to me method 2 and 3?
I've only had "spicy peppery salty" aka jiew yeem.

Is the curry, salt and pepper like deep fried, then tossed with curry powder and spices?

If you've got shell/head with the Portuguese sauce and rice, how is the shell/head integrated into that dish?

If you've got pictures, please sure, I would love to try and tackle a king crab recipe this year while they are still in season.

He doesn't have to be such an asshole about bringing cash when dining out.

Supafly 03-16-2011 06:51 AM

Went to Ho Yuen Kee lastnight. 3 Courses.
Steamed garlic x2
Fried Chili oil / Garlic chips
Fried Head Rice
and the "eee mien"

total price was $212 after taxes for 8.5 Lb.

bigrig 03-17-2011 11:22 AM

im sorry, but i just have to LOL at a lot of these posts

i run a seafood wholesale company. i supply sun sui wah, lucky tao, shiang garden and a lot of local seafood retailers with live king crab. my company is one of the big 4 live king crab suppliers in bc.

EVERY restaurant you go to will scam you. some more than others. you cant look at just the price. trust me.

for example, Sun sui wah restaurant, is charging $16.49 per lbs. the absolute most they will scam you is approx 1 lb. the food is great there, service is good, ambiance is good.

another restaurant, be it, fortune garden, lucky tao, imperial court, will charge, say $10.99. BUT, on average, they will scam you MINIMUM 3 lbs.

you go to these "cheaper" places, it still works out to be approx the same. but you are missing out on better food/service

ANY restaurant that tells u 13 lbs+ is lying out their ass. 90% of ALL catch so far this year in alaska is under 10 lbs. and at that, the average weight of king crab in vancouver is approx 6.5-8.5 lbs.

bigrig 03-17-2011 11:24 AM

i dunno if this is allowed, but i do sell live king crab to ppl i know. so if anyone is interested, lmk.

RevRav 03-17-2011 12:00 PM

(Beside cooking it yourself at home)
The question then comes down to.....how can customers prevent themselves from being scram? You simply can't just get them to bring out a scale and weight it in front of you. (well you can, but many restaurants won't) Even they do show you the live crab before cooking / weight it infront if you, this won't stop them showing you one crab, and cooking another smaller crab. :\
