I believe it was revealed that the media got it wrong. The mass salt buying was due to a fear of shortages not radiation protection. In a similar vein, certain mushrooms also sold out.

Here's an interesting statistic:

Deaths caused by nuclear power plants: 0.04 per terawatt hour
Deaths caused by coal power plants: 161 per terawatt hour.
Deaths caused by rooftop solar power: 0.83 per terawatt hour

Speaking of shortages, and in a similar note, the demand for iodine pills locally are going up.

my family there also went to buy salt but they tell us its because they heard salt was in short supply and selling out; they didn't even know about the nuclear reasoning that we heard about on the news

RMS sees total Japan quake loss at up to $300 billion
LONDON | Mon Mar 21, 2011 2:05pm GMT

LONDON (Reuters) - The Japanese earthquake and tsunami caused a total economic loss of up to $300 billion, about 5 percent of Japan's output, according to an initial estimate from risk modeling agency RMS.

The total cost to the Japanese economy will be between $200 billion and $300 billion, RMS said on Monday.

RMS added that only a "minor proportion" of this would be covered by insurance, although it was still too soon to assess the total insured loss.

The estimate from RMS comprises losses resulting from the earthquake and the tsunami it triggered, including the impact of power supply disruption and the cost of decommissioning nuclear power stations.

That's the reason it was sold out though. Your parents didn't hear the rumor, and thankfully didn't fall for it :)

But the idiots who did kinda screwed it up for them :lol

The difference being that the other two kills you pretty much right away, where as god knows how long radation will take to kill you or affect/cripple your offspring.
Does being deformed make it better than being dead?

oh yeah? so it just happened to sell out? bad season for the salt manufacturers eh? or the inventory forecasters were too busy watching the earthquake news unfold to pay attention to their STABLE demand figures? or perhaps japan was china's biggest export of salt? when has salt production ever had a bad season? (in before you go and google some article referencing a salt factory fire back in the 60's)

Good point,
Do wonder what the true reasoning is for the shortage of salt. Clearly there must have been some sort of effect that resulted in higher salt consumption.

Radiation won't deform you. Educate yourself before speaking again.

Our tourist newspaper "Japan-i" is going to publish a page of messages from folk around the world to all those affected by the recent Tohoku Earthquake and Tsunami. If you can share a message please comment below or send to "mark@tsunago.net" with first name and family name initial (ie. Bob D.).
