I was just thinking about what the potential impact of the quake has on the surrounding volcanoes...

I'm planning to call the Japanese embassy tomorrow. Need to see if they can help me with my situation over there.
Very heart warming. Japan is awesome, thanks for posting that.

http://twitter.com/kiritansu/status/46335057689980928
[by Ms. Arakawa]
I heard that some foreigners were impressed to see these:In the super market Japanese picked up some products which is fallen to the floor and put them back to the display cabinet, or kept in line and purchased neatly. Or.. in crowded train, an old guy gave his seat to pregnant woman and other nice activities what Japanese done. I believed those story and their reaction was true.

[by Ms. Arakawa]
Transport facilities were dead and I was so tired waiting so long. Then, a homeless guy gave me a cardboard saying "use this, it can warm you up". I used to pass homeless people by even when they were begging... Although what he did to me was such a sweet stuff.

http://twitter.com/unosuke/status/46376846505426944
* At Tokyo Disneyland
They distributed sweets that are part of their merchandise. High school girls with heavy makeup took away more candies than they would possibly eat and that raised my eyebrows. Later, I saw those girls giving the candies to kids at evacuation areas. Families with kids had limited mobility and couldn't get to where the candies were distributed. Go girls!
just a few twitter translates... very heart warming.

i was wondering about that myself? shouldn't they have known no to be driving in that area? I'm sure there were warnings.

Maybe those people were thrill seekers and they didn't truely understand the magnitude of what was going to happen?

The twitter comments shows good heart. Especially the one with the homeless man, just goes to show that even those who has nothing are capable of giving. How is that for guilt tripping? Damnn

^ Apparently there was only 15 minutes between the earthquake and the arrival of the tsunami - iirc, officials stated there wasn't enough time to send out a warning.

Watch this vid

It's insane how slowly it starts off and within 2-3 minutes the entire area is completely flooded and destroyed

Just keep trying, man. I spent all Friday calling my friend's cellphone. Sometimes it would ring, other times it would be unavailable, other times it would ring and drop off... Pretty random & unreliable.

When I got through, it was such a relief. I could hear car alarms, police sirens, and loud talking in the background. The latter is the most surprising because the Japanese are usually very quiet and timid in public spaces.

Best of luck.

Minami Sanriku, Japan (CNN) -- A 60-year-old Japanese man was rescued Sunday more than nine miles out at sea after clinging to the swept-away remnants of his home for more than two days.
"I thought today was the last day of my life," Hiromitsu Shinkawa told his rescuers, according to Kyodo News Agency.
